Overall we really enjoyed our stay. I expected better food and better rooms for the price. The Forum was our best meal. Our entire group loved their food. I was not impressed with West or the Main Dining Room, considering the price. We definitely have had better experiences on cruises. The grounds are beautiful. The bunker tour was neat.Nearby activities: We enjoyed renting e-bikes and riding all over the property. Also, my husband played the Old White Course and said it was the best course and golfing experience he has ever had. Falconry was amazing, highly recommend. Lastly, we rented Razrs and went riding on the mountain trails; great time for entire family.

Stepping into the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV, feels like stepping back in time to an era of opulence rarely experienced today. This iconic resort, boasting nearly 800 rooms, exudes grandeur from every corner.Although I only had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast in the magnificent grand dining room, I was instantly captivated by the sheer opulence of the hotel's decor. The lavishness of the furnishings and the delightful era colors transport you to a bygone era of elegance and luxury.Breakfast was nothing short of perfection, with a delectable spread that met every expectation. However, what truly stood out was the impeccable service provided by our table attendant, Dawn. Her kindness, wit, and delightful conversation added an extra layer of warmth to an already unforgettable experience. After breakfast, we couldn't resist capturing a few photos against the backdrop of the stunning decor a true testament to the rich history and timeless beauty of the Greenbrier. Originally founded in 1778, this historic hotel holds nearly 250 years of stories within its walls.Under the ownership of Governor Jim Justice, the Greenbrier has been revitalized into a world-class destination, seamlessly blending modern amenities with the timeless charm of its early history. It's evident that every effort has been made to preserve the heritage of this esteemed establishment while ensuring a luxurious experience for every guest.Whether you're staying overnight or simply stopping by for a meal, a visit to the Greenbrier Resort is an unforgettable journey through history and hospitality. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an indulgent escape in the heart of West Virginia.

We traveled here with high hopes. It's a famed resort with a deep history. It's labeled as America's hotel. It was disappointing to say the least. We stayed at the cottages because we brought our dogs. While the setup is great. Away from the main hotel, big rooms, a lot of green space to walk the dogs. It was an old, tattered room. We paid $350 for a dog fee, to walk into a room with old stained carpet everywhere, and a musty smell. I totally get the historical feel. But it doesn't need to be dirty. There was a fair amount of mechanical noise from the AC units near the room we could hear at night. Now for the rest of the hotel. Parking can be self and you don't have to pay for it. That's a big plus in a resort for us. You'll pay a historical tax on literally everything you buy on property. It's like 15% or so. It adds up quickly on you. You'll also get the 20% service charge, which bartenders seem to try to hide that from you by not giving you the itemized receipt unless you ask. I got hit a few times in the start not realizing I was already paying the tip. I felt taken advantage of after I realized that. The spa was ok. Dining was good, just expensive. Bunker tour is a let down. Trails were fun. Walking on the golf course trail was beautiful and memorable. This was an experience for us, and that was worth it, but we would not come back.

Great place for a vacation! The hotel is beautiful in and out. You can tell it s over 100 years old in some parts but it is very well kept and mostly updated. The staff in the hotel and every restaurant and venue we went in was super friendly and extremely helpful. Everything is super expensive but well worth it for a special occasion.

Step back in time to the nostalgia of Dorothy Drapers designs and pre WWII Era and experience the whimsy of the rich and famous as you walk the stunning grounds tour the inside of this luxury resort. From the horse and carriage rides, the chapel and the croquet court outside to the Gone with the Wind chandelier, portraits of royalty and the infamous Cuban missile crisis bunker on the inside the charm and aristocracy is unmatched. While the hefty price tag can be off-putting, it is worth every penny to experience the amazing customer service and indulge in this piece of history that is so unique and charming. We will definitely be visiting again!

We loved every moment of the trip from afternoon tea, the history tours, the meals, our room, the evening movie, the shopping, and especially interacting with the other guests and the employees. We met so many wonderful people who go out of their way to make your stay wonderful. It was my husband's first visit and he absolutely loved it. He's already already thinking about our next trip. The highlight for me was the breakfast buffet in the dining room. It's the best breakfast you will find anywhere. Yes, the Greenbrier is pricy. Is it worth it? Absolutely!Food & drinks: The breakfast buffet is first class and so is any dinner option. Don't miss out on Prime 44 West. The steaks are divine.

The Greenbrier used to be noted foe its excellent quality. I have stayed before. This was a disappointing visit. They were short staffed everywhere. The room wasn't cleaned properly. Furniture in the room showed lack of maintenance. We ate in the restaurants there both nights. The food was still as delicious as always but service in Prime 44 West extremely poor. It was sad to see the decline in this once elegant resort.

We stayed here over Christmas and I cannot even begin to tell you how overpriced and fluffed up this place is. The historic aspect is quite cool, and it keeps that step back in time to old money south feel, but upon closer inspection you can see the cracks. And a lot of cracks there are. The place could use a fine dusting, half the furniture hasn t been cleaned or polished in years and it shows. The staff is very friendly, we never met a person that wasn t helpful and always on point. Can t say enough for them, most especially since they were working over Christmas. That s the only good thing to say really. The food is standard fare at double the price with tacked on fees for everything. And if the place reflected the proceeds maybe the fees wouldn t bite as much but for all the helpfulness of the staff, you can tell the place is sinking into the ground like a shed behind a nice house that someone is neglecting. I wouldn t recommend unless you have more money than you know what do do with and want to toss it around. I can only surmise the 5 star reviews are from people attempting to convince other people that the thousands they spent were in fact worth it.Nearby activities: There were a boatload of things to do and everyone of them is chargeable, some more worth it than others.

Personally I think the negative reviewers are just complainers. I stayed here for 3 nights and I have to say, whole place is top notch. Yes its old, ITS HISTORIC. The staff is incredible the rooms are clean, and the food was good. Really enjoyed coffee by the fireplace in the morning and wish I had more time here to explore all this place has to offer when I am not here on company time.

From the moment we arrived at the grand entrance, we were greeted with impeccable service and a warm welcome. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel's elegant design and sophisticated ambiance created a truly luxurious atmosphere. The room was spacious and beautifully appointed, equipped with every amenity imaginable. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the linens were of the finest quality.

The Greenbrier is truly my favorite resort! For the past 10 years I have been regularly visiting from Virginia with my husband, family and friends. I am in love with the decor and it makes my heart happy every time I drive up and see it! The whole staff is top notch, with many of them having been there for decades! The variety of restaurants and fantastic food is wonderful as well as the shopping. We have many activities there over the years including skeet shooting, razr tours, falconry, carriage rides and golf. All of them have been loads of fun! Planning another girls spa trip next month and I cannot wait to share my favorite place with these ladies! Any time of year is wonderful as well! Christmas is spectacular. The spring and fall colors are beautiful and we love going to the outdoor pool in the summertime!Rooms: The colors are beautiful! Great water pressure in the showers.Food & drinks: We have enjoyed many meals at all of the restaurants and we especially enjoy Drapers and Prime 44.

This is not the hotel it once was. It is beautiful, particularly around Christmas. Much of the furniture is worn and ratty. Rooms could be cleaner. The food is not as good as it was. The prices for the quality of food served are exorbitant. You can get a better steak at Longhorns or Texas Roadhouse for about one-third the price. I don't mind paying for really good food, but I didn't find any here.I've been going to the Greenbrier for many decades. The experience now is more like being on a cruise ship traveling second class at first class prices. There is much to do in the way of activities. Take lots of money with you and lower your expectations.Rooms: The walk-in closet was dusty and dirty. The room was okay with a view of a rotting roof on the pool area.Walkability: Beautiful grounds to wall and explore.

Everything about this trip was AMAZING!! From the beautiful resort, to the delicious food and abundant activities....my FAVORITE trip ever. With so much to do here, there is something for everyone and you will never get board. Afternoon Tea is a daily tradition at 4pm, and is included in your stay. Don't forget to try their world famous Greenbrier peaches!! Absolute perfect getaway destination!!

The Greenbrier is a beautiful place to visit. Service is good in places and bad in others. Bad when trying to figure out your first trip. The people answering the phone are mildly familiar with the brochures and have a hard time explaining the current opportunities. You will waste some time learning your way around. But, once you get it, you'll find it easy to find what you want. And they have everything.

Spring Row Cottage - the problems began at the front door.We enjoyed the Greenbrier for a 3-night long weekend. Great food, lovely service, fun activities. We chose to upgrade and stay at Spring Row Cottage. In all my years of traveling for work, I ve only seen one hotel situation that was worse.Chipped and scarred outer door, stained rugs, threadbare, stained, and fraying upholstery, stained curtains unbelievable that this is the Greenbrier. Super comfortable bed, but the fabric bed frame had generations of stains upon stains. Really sort of queasy making. The faucet at the wet bar sink was corroded, pitted, and covered with deposits. Unbelievable. We spoke to management, and they responded, which is to their credit. But I doubt that management is going to take these cottages out of inventory. Apparently, some of the cottages have been upgraded they are all for sale but unless you can be sure, avoid this option!Greenbrier management honestly, shame on you. Either pull these out of inventory or market them as Shabby chic and price accordingly!

If you re not more advanced in your age, white, and wealthy, I recommend caution. I walked in wearing Vans and a dress, with my tattoos showing, and the valet gave me a minimum of 10 angry looks. The room came straight out of the shining - I wish I was joking in that I slept with a light on. Then I went to the bar - it s insane you need a reservation at one of the restaurants even as a solo person - and had a man say the nastiest things to me, but the bar wouldn t cut him off. You enter a different world coming here, and it taunts my soul that I had to visit such a place for a conference. At the very least, it is an experience. The hallways were particularly creepy. I promise you can find a more affordable resort with less terrifying aspects.Rooms: Terrifying and walls are painfully thin.

This was our anniversary visit which coincides with the resorts Christmas themed decorations. Overall we were not disappointed. While a few restaurants were closed or not open for dinner we very much enjoyed our dinner at the Forum. The staff took care of our every need and our entrees were perfect. No doubt the restaurant manager, Lisa, influences the staff in a caring Greenbrier tradition. We enjoyed the entire visit and will be back again.

I cannot believe that with taxes, a historical preservation fee , and a resort fee, we paid over $600 per night to stay at this shabby, dirty resort. The carpet and furniture in our room was covered in stains, to the point we requested slippers to avoid walking on it. Housekeeping only remembered to bring one pair. The coffee cup lids in our room were covered in dust, and had clearly not been attended to for several guests-worth of stays. Cleanliness was a general concern. The fabric hanging over the indoor pool was covered in yellow and black stains. In the locker rooms, the curtains were yellowing and the towels were piled above my head- it had clearly not been cleaned throughout the day. There was no way to wipe down gym equipment before or after use. Please do not expect 5 star service, even with 5 star prices. As I said, housekeeping forgot half our request. There were plenty of bell hops and valet out at arrival, but we completely unpacked our car on our own had to approach someone to drop our key off with. I left feeling completely mystified as to how they were spending the 9% historical preservation fee they apply to every single purchase. The restaurant food was excellent, but more expensive than most Michelin star restaurants I have been to. The buffet breakfast in the main dining room was the best offering. The shopping options are excellent, and my husband very much enjoyed the off-roading experience. If you are used to staying in other hotels and resorts at this price point, I think the Greenbrier will feel like a major disappointment and waste of money.

An overpriced money pit. Food is no better than a fast food restaurant. Rooms are outdated, towels are old. Not a place for kids because the bowling alley and arcade is booked for most of the day with private party. So wandering around a large hotel is about as exciting as watching grass grow when you have kids who want something fun to do. It is a big old hotel with history but read about it and stay in a resort that has more to offer

This place is beautiful. The bad of it is I paid $469 which was the fee for a 1 night stay. When I ended up checking my bank account they charged me another $469. Now after disputing with them, they are not grasping I was charged double. Even after showing them the receipts and confirmation. I will not be returning. Advise if you do stay, be aware of manipulation of charges.

Summary: Expensive and not-perfect. But still well worth visiting at least once. This was our first visit. We came for the Christmas weekend with our kids.Room: We stayed in a deluxe room and it was well worth the additional price. The room was huge and clean. Bathroom very nice and shower was great. Beds are comfortable and the room was very quiet.Food: Our room service breakfast arrived an hour late, which was lame and threw our entire morning off. But, when it did arrive, it was good. We did the dinner at Whoville and the food there was also pretty tasty.Activities: The Santa photos, afternoon tea, and tree lighting were all very nice. Bowling alley and arcade were fun.Resort grounds are well kept and I thought the property itself was in good shape considering. There are plenty of areas that look worn, but what do you expect given the size of the property and it's age. So much to see even with just walking around and admiring the decorations.Price: Its a lot of money, especially with the fees. But as a special occasion, we really enjoyed it.

Grand old hotel/resort that relies a bit too much on it's past history. Check in took 15 minutes to get a bellman, then another 15 minutes in line at the front desk. We arrived on a Thursday around 5:30pm, which may be a busy time, but still...Room was ok-large but the rug had a bleach stain near the door. There was a convention at the hotel, and the next door neighbors were REALLY noisy. Had dinner at the Forum Restaurant twice-the food was ok, about average hotel quality but for the prices should have been much better. The restaurant charged a minimum 20% gratuity and 9.5% historic preseervation fee-the fixed gratuity meant the service was just so-so. The breakfast buffet was very good, and the service was attentive. Grounds of the hotel were very nice, and the bunker tour was fabulous. We won't return-not worth the price and the overall experiene was below expectations.

Way overpriced. And the fees, omg. I wish I had just done a walk thru instead of staying the night and having dinner. We paid almost 1000 for one night and one dinner. And the shops in the bottom? You better be ready to pay crazy prices there as well. But the pool was amazing, there's a bowling alley, a movie theater, it was December and decorated for Christmas, totally gorgeous place.

I love this Resort Winter Spring Summer or Fall. It's my first time visiting during the Christmas Holiday. WOW - So elegantly decorated. I did a 2 day 1 night visit and didn't want to leave. LOLYou must do the indoor History tour and the Bunker tour.

A great, convenient getaway for a long weekend - we played some tennis in the excellent indoor facility, swam in the fabulous indoor pool, had a great pedicure and sulfur bath (though the baths were too small), and really good meals (best at Prime 44). Really nice conversations with great people at the main bar. Altogether, the "old-timers" around the service staff were excellent and friendly. Concierge staff weren't quite friendly enough - in the way you'd expect in this part of the world. Found a small glass shard in my wine glass - the Manager was also not quite as friendly as you'd expect. Prices are sky high - not only base prices ($80 for a steak's just too much), but the 36% extra added to every single purchase (service charge, historical preservation, taxes, etc.). Pre-adding a service charge to every purchase kind of dilutes the trust in a customer, that they'll reward great and unique service. Some purchases don't require a tip.Food & drinks: Great food and drinks - though not exceptional, particularly at the price. The Prime 44 steak was fantastic, but the cornbread was a bit dry, the spinach a bit runny, the lobster bites a bit small, the cocktail a bit weak. Solid "B".
