Awesome old railroad bridge the the Appalachian Trail uses. This bridge has great views of the James River and will take you to an old lock from the James River & Kanawha Canal

James River Foot Bridge: A Serendipitous Discovery!Who knew a spontaneous wander could lead to such a treasure? That's exactly what happened with the James River Foot Bridge. We stumbled upon this hidden gem purely by chance, and oh, what a fantastic surprise it was!Let me paint you a picture: you're standing on this charming bridge, and the views? Absolutely jaw-dropping! It's like nature decided to show off lush greenery, picture-perfect landscapes, and the gentle flow of the James River. It's the kind of beauty that makes you stop in your tracks and just... wow.The tranquility of this spot is something else. It felt like we discovered our own little slice of paradise. We spent the most amazing time there, snapping what must have been a hundred photos (no kidding, our phones were working overtime!) and just soaking up the peaceful vibes. The James River Foot Bridge isn't just a crossing; it's a destination in its own right. Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature lover, or just someone who appreciates a beautiful view, this place is a must-visit. Trust me, it's one of those spots you'll want to return to, just to experience that sense of awe all over again. So if you ever find yourself near the James River, make a detour to this bridge. It s a little piece of tranquility that you didn't know you needed, until you're there!

I really enjoyed this spot! The parking is decent but it wasn t super busy when we got there so it helped. We walked over the bridge and to this little waterfall and then the rail road tracks. We walked along the tracks. It was a beautiful day and a nice spot to check out on the way to see the Natural Bridge.

Love this place! It's very peaceful and doesn't usually get much foot traffic. There are train tracks on a parallel bridge and if you're lucky, you might be able to catch a train going by!

This place is way too scenic to not stop and spend a good half an hour or so at!There's a boat ramp here, a dam, and the bridge itself is even part of the Appalachian Trail!Fun fact: Where you park is in Amherst County, but the rock formations across the water on the other end of the bridge are in Bedford County!

Great place to go for pictures on the bridge or to access the Appalachian trail. The train was pretty awesome to watch as well!

I thought this was a super cool footbridge to visit. Nothing crazy, but it does provide some nice views of the river. Recommend going in the fall because all of the colors of the leaves are awesome. The railroad tracks are on the far side of the bridge.

What a cool experience to hike over this footbridge, the longest on the AT, dedicated to a lifelong trail guy, above the Snowden Dam on the James in Virginia.

The AT uses the bridge to cross the James river. From the lot there are hikes beyond. Lotsa folks use the bridge to jump from into the river. On weekends is can be very busy.I'm local and visit often to hike. Last visit I found a lot of trash near and around the bridge.

I enjoy bringing my family here for the trails! I believe you can camp as well there's also a boat launch across the road that is great access above the damn

Beautiful footbridge along the Appalachian Trail that crosses the James River into Glasgow, Virginia. Great day hike area and good fishing nearby.

Great views! Fun place to take a walk especially around dusk. Fishing was good right beneath the train tracks. Caught a bunch of sunfish but the kids had fun!

Stopped on Hwy 501/ 130 on our way back to Lexington, VA. From Lynchburg VA. The river was flowing briskly from the recent rains. On the other side of the river we found a small water fall.

Great place to view the James River. The bridge is very sturdy and provides a great vantage point. The Appalachian Trail crosses the bridge. Fun place to visit!

Beautiful crossing of the James River at Snowden VA. The longest foot bridge on the entire Appalachian Trail.

Awesome view of the upper James River Bridge parallels an old railroad bridge and is real close (100 yards?) to a dam. After you cross the walking bridge, if you follow the path it will lead you past rocky waterfalls that you can get right up to, and eventually to the end of the railroad bridge. Well with the very short walk through the dense woods.

This is a really cool feature any time of year. The bridge itself is actually part of the Appalachian Trail, easily accessible with plenty (usually) of parking. Cross the bridge and turn right to access the AT or turn left and emerge a few yards out to the railroad tracks for a nice view.

Such a lovely place; a beautiful day. A ranger came and was extremely nice to all of us. They had the bathrooms open and he was checking on them.

This is a special bridge, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the James River. Please treat it with respect and understand that volunteers maintain the Appalachian Trail (nbatc.org). And enjoy the amazing views of the James River Face Wilderness!
