My vehicle sometimes does not go into reverse and deaccelerate by itself. I drove the car to A1 American Transmission in Bissonnet, Houston TX for repairs. They told me that they will scan it and check out whatever is causing the problem. The diagnosis and possibly fixing (according to them if it was a simple fix) would cost $495. After the diagnosis, they recommended replacing the transmission which I declined. When I wanted to pay and pick up my vehicle, I was informed that the transmission has been taken apart and I would have to tow the vehicle. They refused to put the vehicle back the same way it was when I brought it in. I was left with the choice of either towing the vehicle which they made undrivable or fixing the vehicle with them. When I picked up the vehicle after I opted to fix it with them, there was not much a different than when I dropped it off. I ended up spending more than the car was worth!!! I will not recommend getting even a free service from this shop. Ripped off? You tell me something.Service: Transmission

Since my late father referred me here for transmission work, it only seems appropriate I comment on his birthday. My Dad knew cars...and a good mechanic. JR extended my Sable's life by at least five years. You need honest estimates and guaranteed repairs, this is the place to come. Customer now for 12 years (or so) and two cars. JR and Robert a great team. PS-- they do general automotive work as well.

Robert and his team is extremely professional and attentive. They price their services very reasonably compared to nearby competitors and are always honest about what needs to be done no extra selling of unnecessary things, just what s necessary for your car. Would recommend to anyone

This place is terrible! I brought a Honda Accord here in 2015 for a fluid exchange. Once this was completed the antilock brakes activated every time I tapped the brake. I took it back and the mechanic even rode with me. Their explanation was it would stop doing this over time. How can you give me back my car with a new issue? Then not even fix it!I ended up having to get a new car even though prior to giving my car to them, everything was fine!Avoid this place as they will destroy your car.

My transmission repair was a great experience. J.R. was very straight forward. He took me step by step through the process of letting me know what exactly I needed to have my transmission repaired properly. He evaluated my vehicle for free. Now, in order for him to tell you what exactly needs to be done he will need to remove your transmission. He does charge a fee to remove your transmission. He will waive that fee if you go ahead and get your vehicle repaired. He also pointed out some additional work I need done on my vehicle. He recommended that I replace my motor mounts and transmission mounts. The mounts were the originals from 2001. The passenger side axle had a worn boot. He also found several oil leaks. He was nice enough to put my car on a lift and show me where I need the additional repairs. I went ahead and had him complete some of the additional repairs. I have had my car back in my possession for over a week and it runs like a dream. I did take my car to other transmission shops to be evaluated, but I felt that J.R. was the most honest. I went with my gut feeling and it paid off.

The outside of this place is very deceiving, but step inside and you will find the best damn mechanics in all of Houston! JR and Robert are great. Fair, honest and very knowledgeable. They went above and beyond to take care of my AC issue.

In September 2020 I first initially sent my car to A1 transmission auto because my car was over heating . Week later I received phone calls, messages and emails stating exactly what was wrong with my vehicle. The mechanic stated he didn t know what the actual problem so he sent my entire engine to get an X-ray . Once it came back he stated that my gasket was warped ! Ok, and in order for him to start the process on fixing my engine he would need $500. Once he received my money he then said other things needed to be fixed such as the coolant , fan ,temperature,crank shaft etc... so I then sent him another $500! I rushed after work to get my car and at that point the mechanic said everything was great and ready to leave the shop. Two days later my car stops in the road with a huge oil leak. I sent the mechanic photos of what was happening and he said to have a tow company bring it back. The mechanic said to me over the phone that it was transmission fluid , but in reality it was oil.3 days past I sent the mechanic $300 to fix my car and he said it was fixed and he replaced the oil leak and it s leaking internally. But per our email, I paid the mechanic the for the front timing cover and front crankshaft seal are leaking oil; for preventive maintenance !Third time the car broke down my car gave me an warning sign that it was overheating, I pulled over and again oil was everywhere under my vehicle. So therefore once again , I paid out my pocket to have my car towed to the mechanic shop. I received a phone call stating that my car was ready for pickup, Upon arrival as I was getting to leave the mechanic stated to me that ONCE I LEAVE THE SHOP THIS TIME I CAN NO LONGER RETURN! So, I then said ok. Before leaving I open the hood of my car to my surprise, there was my coolant tank filled to the top with oil. I started videoing and as well taking photos of my car. The mechanic tried to explain that the coolant in my car was dirt but in reality it was oil. I placed my finger inside and showed the mechanic that the residue inside was indeed oil. After showing him, I then asked . Are you the actual person working on my car because I don t believe that you could do me like this? He stated that He was not the person working on my car and that he wasn t fully supervising the other mechanics who were! He said that the car wasn t flushed and I should leave it and retrieve it another day.. 2 days later after paying A1 transmission a total of $2300 I wasn t able to drive me car home but instead I sent a tow company to retrieve the vehicle. The car will not drive for longer than 5 min without over heating again and I don t have any other money to send elsewhere.Services: Transmission, Auto engine diagnostic

Robert and A1 American transmission is by far the most honest mechanic in Houston. He explains in detail everything that is needed for your vehicle and he never leads you astray, or tries to get you to pay for things that you don't really need. I've been going to him for 3 years and 3 cars between me and my husband and I will continue to go to him. It's nice to go to a mechanic without having to worry about whether or not you're being screwed.

This place has been in business for years. JR (the owner) stands by his work and is very knowledgeable. He will definately take great care of you and your transmission. If there were more stars I would give them!!!!

Spent $650 to fix my stuck shifter. Got the car home and the shifter worked and then got stuck again. I don't believe they were honest about the repairs that were done and overcharged me. I asked for a refund to take it to someone who knows how to work on older transmissions but was told to take it back to them. I don't have much faith in the reliability of their work at this point.

Roberto treats his customers like family. He repaired our volkswagen transmission when the dealer told us it would be over $4000 for a new one. We have recommended A1 to our friends and they have been so thankful. This is a real family shop where you know he will do everything he can to get your car fixed at an affordable price. We've been doing business with A-1 Transmission for over 25 years, and have been very satisfied with their honesty and the work that they have done for us.If, for any reason, there was a glitch (in 25 years, there are bound to be a few), they responded quickly to make things right. Your ReviewEvery time I go to A-1 American, as I have been doing for almost 20 years, I, as well as my car, have received complete attention and patient, clear explanations of everything that was going on, or was being considered as one of ways that a situation could be handled. I have never felt "left out" of the project, or that I was simply asked to sign something when I didn't understand what was going on. My cars along the way have all done well after being examined and treated at A-1 American. I guess it sounds like medical treatment, but as a former nurse, that's how I can best express it!

I have a Volkswagen Eurovan Camper and could not find a mechanic who was able to fix the electrical and AC system. The Volkswagen dealers and the best VW mechanic in Austin TX both had my car for a week and were unable to repair it. Robert at A 1 and his mechanic diagnosed and fixed the bad wiring, relays and were able to get my AC working like new. They are very honest and strait forward. Their facility may not be as fancy as a VW dealer but the service was 10x better and they actually got to the bottom of the problem without out keeping my car for a week. I am so grateful to have found Robert and his shop. I was going to sell my van because no one before him could fix it.

They broke a VVT intake sensor wile working on my gear shift and didnt fix it or even tell me about it.

I really won t even give them one star... Avoid them.. Took my transmission to have rebuilt twice, they do not stand by there warranty tried to get more money out of me.. Very disappointed.. Avoid them....
