I don't remember how I found this place. Stayed here a few years ago with family and would highly recommend it for the location, Cleanliness and price. I rated it 4 stars to ward off those who are looking for a five-star hotel with room service, etc. You are not going to get that here. What you will get is a nice, quiet room(s) clean and with running water. A pretty lame continental breakfast but it should get you through your first hike of the day. There are so many dining options within walking distance. And if you a Tesla driver, there is a charging station right across the road.

This is the coolest little chalet to stay in. It's so much better than the big cookie cutter hotels where you have doors slamming and kids running down the hall and stairs all night. It's not connected to anything so it's a very quiet room. It's also very clean. It needs a little work here and there due to it's age but nothing worth complaining about. In fact, the age (1938) gives it tons of character.Oh, and the owner is great too.

This was a wonderful vintage motel, very clean and tidy. Comfortable beds and a lovely outside sitting area. Was a wonderful respite while we visited the Black Hills. Michelle is a wonderful host as well as the staff. Will definitely stay again and recommend!Rooms: Clean and comfortable

All around great experience staying here. Michelle went above and beyond when she found out someone in our group was diabetic. She asked what she could buy that he could eat for breakfast and throughout the day. She purchased food and told us to help ourselves anytime. She provided us with a cribbage board and towels for our motorcycles. Cozy, clean rooms. Great location. Will definitely stay here again!

Just the sweetest little gem. It's not fancy, there's no pool, or exciting amenities but you do get the charm of a 1937 vintage drive in motel that is beautifully maintained. If you'd like your room turned over, new towels, or anything else just ask and they are more than happy to accommodate. It's walking distance to a good portion of old Custer downtown and minutes from Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, the Custer Wildlife Loop, and many other attractions. Just adorable!

If you want to experience a little bit of American history this might be a good place to stay. If you want convenience, a decent-sized bathroom and a level floor, you might want to keep looking. The management and employees were friendly and helpful. The on-the-go breakfast was nice - good coffee, muffins, granola bars, fruit, yogurt and fruit juice. The unit was small with a tiny bathroom. It had a window air conditioner but I could not find a heater in the middle of the night when I was freezing. The main problem for us was the floor was slanted and we felt somewhat dizzy walking around. This maybe affected us more as we are in our early 60 s but I don t think it would be good for senior citizens.

Stayed one night on motorcycle trip in mid July through Custer State Park, Sturgis and the Badlands. Conveniently located. Very cozy setup. Reasonably priced. Clean. Not fancy but everything you need. Friendly owners and staff. A couple short blocks to all the Custer SD restaurants and shops. A welcome change from the very expensive or typical chains. Thoroughly enjoyed the old school nature of my cabin, parking in front of my cabin, the courtyard, and hanging outside your cabin on your chairs and small table to enjoy the fresh air, have a drink, or converse with or just wave to other guests. Would definitely stay again.

Charming, cozy, comfortable and in a great location when exploring the Black Hills. Though built in 1937, don t let your mind run wild - these wonderful little cottages are clean and modern while still keeping its vintage touch. Terrifically priced (you ll be outside all day anyway), quiet grounds and independently owned - if wanting a place in Custer, consider the Chalet Motel for sweet dreams of the majesty that is the Black Hills.

This lovely motel is charming beyond words. It's the only place we want to stay when we visit South Dakota. The town is small and perfect to walk. Restaurant options are plentiful. But this felt like home away from home. The private rooms are ideally sized and offer everything needed for a comfortable stay. Breakfast is available in the main office. Don't worry - there are plenty of options! The grounds and rooms are extremely well maintained. Management is very helpful and fully knowledgeable of local history and points of interest. This place alone is the perfect reason to visit Custer.

Can I say how awesome Michelle (owner) is? I missed a flight and had a cabin reserved. She was able to give me another cabin at the same price AND worked with Hotel's.com to get me a full refund, hence, giving her the entire reservation! The place was super clean, smelled great and was pet-friendly. It's an old, vintage-type of place with individual cabins right on the main street . You can walk to all the shops and restaurants! Definitely will come back!

This is a fantastic place to stay. The owner was very polite and helpful. The room I stayed in was very clean and cozy. The bed was very comfortable and the Wi-Fi was fast. The shower took around 30-60 second to warm up, but it was perfectly hot after that. There is a smart TV mounted on the wall, and there was juices, coffee machine, fresh apples, and some granola bars in my room as well. You can certainly tell that they are thoughtful and take care of the property.Perfect spot to stay if visiting Wind Cave National Park or Custer State Park. There are two excellent coffee shops in town, but the Espresso Hut located next to the motel has the best breakfast sandwich (made with fresh waffle, bacon, and eggs) I have had and a great way to start the day. Custer is a small town with a lot of great dining options for all meal periods. Will absolutely recommend to stay here if you re in the area.

Stayed there 2 months back. Amazing stay at such a modest price. They even had some awesome snacks. We went there quite late and check in was a breeze (they already did all the things). Accommodation was also clean and had all the stuff (fridge, microwave, bathroom...)Curtains could be a bit darker, but I travel with eye-cover so no issues there. Thankyou for such a wonderful place. Will definitely stay there again.

It s a cute place but very small rooms. The shower was extremely tight. But for being one of the oldest motels around, the stay was decent. I thought we d have an entire cabin but several cabins are actually split in half. And the walls are not very soundproof.Staff was friendly and checkin/out was easy.

The owner Michelle is an absolute gem of a person! I left behind a bag during my stay and only realized when I got to my next stop, but by then I was too far away. She got in contact to assure me they found it in the room and they would keep it safe.Michelle went above and beyond providing different shipping solutions and even drove out to the city to send everything over. Thank you so much for reuniting me with my camera and the memories captured in it. I m eternally grateful!

Cute little bungalows perfect for a night or two while in Custer. The owner, Michelle, is super friendly and accommodated us with our bikes allowing us a shed to lock them in for the night.A nice warm shower and a comfortable bed. I recommend anyone to stay here while passing through town.

pros: ultra-friendly staff, great location for wind cave and mt Rushmorecons (might just be room I was in):Slow drain shower (feet are submerged by the time you're done with shower). Staff offered to send maintenance, but want them there while I was in the room. Shower head was turning black. Bath faucet needs an aerator. Water spits in 3 directions and makes a mess. Kitchen faucets had milky/cloudy water. Staff said it could be due to water in the line. Finally, please install some blackout curtains. The outdoor lights stay on all night and it's too bright to sleep with translucent curtains. This was the first time I felt like leaving and going to another hotel :(.

We spent 8 nights exploring the Black Hills from our home base at the Chalet Motel. We loved the location, plus the warmth and hospitality of the motel staff. All our needs were met and then some. A recent severe hailstorm unfortunately knocked out the neon lights and caused some other cosmetic damage, but the owner is working hard to fix things up good as new. It didn t detract a bit from our clean and comfortable room. Parking is tight so keep that in mind if you re traveling with a large vehicle. Also, the rooms are a bit tight but the value and location far outweighed what we may have gotten for other accommodations. Besides, you re in the Black Hills and shouldn t be doing much else than sleeping in your room anyway! Town is a mere 5 minute walk away. I d have no issue staying here again. We loved it! Thank you for helping us make wonderful memories!

Charming place right in downtown Custer. Close to a great coffee shop and MANY restaurants; and next door to the George S. Mickelson Trail. The grounds are very nice with a deck and even a swing. Flowers everywhere. The room was very clean and comfortable; fridge and microwave available, and good internet. The check in and services were excellent. Why stay at a chain hotel that looks like every other? This motel is the reason we travel.

If you're looking for a traditional hotel experience, this may not be the place for you. What Chalet Motel offers is a reasonably priced, vintage experience perfectly placed to enjoy everything that the Black Hills has to offer. Michelle, the owner, gives everything a personal touch and is a wealth of information about the area. Our room was comfortable, well appointed, and included a cute kitchenette. Would recommend and would stay again!

This unconventional motel was one of the highlights of our trip. It's easily within walking distance of the main downtown strip, and Michelle in the office was so friendly and gave us some great recommendations for dinner and brunch. The motel also had a great grassy area where we were able to play the giant Connect-4 and bag toss game they had set out.

The Chalet Motel was a life saver! Booking was fast and easy last minute. When we arrived the staff was extremely personable and helpful. We got their smallest room, and while it was small, it was perfect for two. The room was extremely clean on arrival and the staff did a great job cleaning up everyday.I cannot say enough good things about this motel. Do not hesitate to stop in.

Cute little place! The bathroom smelled some but it's an older place so expected some of that. I would stay again. Beds comfy and the lady running it was very pleasant and welcoming. She had our room ready and our little breakfast already in the room. Would stay again.

Awesome little motel, with great rooms. Very clean, right in the middle of Custer, SD. Everything is pretty much within walking distance and there's an amazing lake just up the road. The owners are super super nice, and will give you extra towels and things should you need it. They're usually around and will greet you. Kinda feels like a small town bed and breakfast :)
