I definitely intend to go back and next time I ll get more photos of the location. It s beautiful and peaceful. There s a conference like table in one little alcove, a couch by the fire, two chairs together, a couple chairs around in various places. It has a very comfortable at home vibe. They have gluten free items and a wide selection of drinks. The website and Google review page was slightly confusing but I was able to call and get the hours and confirmation that the coffee shop was its own able to the public business. I think it would be very helpful for Modal to set up a second Google page for just the coffee shop with info and their hours. There is plenty of parking behind the building and five minute parking up front.

This is definitely one of the better hostels I've stayed at. The bedding and mattresses are very comfortable, and the bunk curtains help to give you a little privacy. I didn't have any issues with noise, however I always use ear plugs at hostels (just in case).Staff was nice and very accommodating. Location is fantastic (less than half a mile from Gather Greenville and just a little over a mile walk to downtown). It was nice to wake up, cook some eggs, and order my morning latte without having to put on real pants.

I would give a 4.5 stars. The location is fantastic, close to all things downtown Greenville. The rooms are very well done, beds are comfortable, private bath was very nice and clean. The only complaint I have is the quite hours 10-7 are not enforced so at 1:30 am I was still awake due to other guest that were loud in the common area. Also, wasn't aware that there was only 1 comp coffee, but 2 people in my party, so it was a little awkward ordering 2 not realizing I was going to be charged for one. It was good, it just wasn't explained well. I would still stay here again.

Great stay for the price! cozy bed with curtains that allows me to feel like I'm in my own space up in there. Friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately the sound travels easily through the halls, and I am a light sleeper, so I was woken up by people returning to the hostel late at night and waking up to make breakfast early in the morning - if you're a deep sleeper, this wouldn't be a problemRooms: cozy, clean, nice.Walkability: Short walk to downtown, breweries, restaurants, etc.Food & drinks: Great coffee & great quality beer selection for a hostel. Unfortunately the bar closes at 8pm.

I stopped in at Modal for a quick overnight business trip to Greenville & was impressed! The hostel makes great use of space, with ample open common spaces, lots of indoor & outdoor seating options, a well-stocked open kitchen, and thoughtfully-designed dorms. The team members I met were warm, and it was great to see Modal's mission of service elevated in the featured artwork, partnerships with local companies to source things like coffee & gifts, and general vibe of welcoming. I'd happily book here again for future travel (or even just a coffee - tasty!).One note that's not really Modal's fault, but others may want to understand: this is a super affordable option that's convenient to much the Greenville has to offer - assuming you have transportation and/or time to walk. There are a few chain restaurants across the street, but access to Greenville's growing downtown scene is a pretty long walk for most folks. I had the luxury of using Modal as a place to relax/sleep, but if I were wanting to bop around & explore the city, I would add the cost of a rental car or a sizable Uber budget into my plans. You'll very likely want an easy way to get to/from the hostel during your stay.I'm looking forward to my next visit - thanks, Modal crew!Rooms: I rented Xeno, a 3-bunk room, as a private space. The room was very clean & comfortable, with lots of heavy fabirc accents & natural wood incorporated into the decor. There is lots of available storage, including large personal lockers assigned to your keycard & open storage space for personal items, packing/unpacking, etc. Each bunk includes a multiport wall charger and personal lighting. Bedding was clean & cozy, and appropriate layering was provided for the climate (which can range from freezing to balmy). Bunks are sturdy and include ladder access for guests. Each bunk includes a privacy curtain that can be drawn to block light/visibility. This room includes both a standalone sink/mirror and an en-suite bathroom with a large sink, toilet, and rainfall shower (but no tub). Towels are provided in your personal locker, and hot water was available right away.Nearby activities: Modal is most convenient to downtown Greenville, including many restaurants, Falls Park, and the Bons Secour Wellness Arena. Upstate SC includes many parks & outdoor experiences, the nearest being Paris Mountain State Park.Safety: Modal is in a quiet & well-lit suburban area. The facility exterior & onsite parking is well lit and open. The hostel has an onsite staff member available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access to rooms & personal lockers is provided via keycard.Walkability: There are ample sidewalks in good repair with direct access to the downtown corridor (~1 mile away). Traffic can be heavy in the area which may affect your experience. Nearby major intersections have crosswalks & access ramps.Food & drinks: Onsite coffee shop serves typical fare (coffee + milk beverages, some baked goods & snacks) using local producers. The common kitchen has some breakfast staples stocked for your stay & includes a small canteen with snacks/drinks/necessities available for purchase.

We checked in late, staff was helpful. The location was very close to a lot & parking in the back was convenient to back door. I wish there had been a way to enter the parking lot from the front. Turing left on a slight curve is stressful. The room was great, sleeping in bunk beds was a much enjoyed throwback however I wish there had been something else to hold on too once I got to the top stair. There was also a dip in the bathroom floor that felt a bit unsafe. I wanted to mention this to staff but we left before the shop opened. Everything else was on point & very clean!I would def stay here again!

I ve stayed in many hostels around the world and this was an above average experience overall: the staff was kind, the location is good, and the common areas were warm and welcoming. While the decor is very nice, the room was not as clean as we d hoped. The sleeping space smelled strongly of body odor. The bed was dusty and detritus from previous guests was littered in the gap next to the bunk (e.g., used ear plugs). The cubbies by the bed were quite dirty containing dust, dirt, and what appeared to be food waste. The floors were not clean enough to walk on barefoot without getting small crumbs and things stuck to your feet. The toilet seat in the bathroom was broken (did not stay up), paint was peeling in the sink and door, the grout in the shower was turning orange and had flecks of black goop (mold?) emerging from between the tiles. Cubbies and other surfaces had enough dust to introduce a lack of confidence in regular cleanings. We received a top and bottom bunk, despite selecting two bottom bunks in the online form. Afterward, we noticed other reviewers also mentioned their bunk choices were not honored. Finally, it did not appear the policies document we signed before arriving was being enforced (e.g. suitcases out on the floor, personal sleeping bags). Despite being told upon booking that guests could not stay more than 7 nights in 30 to prevent long term lodging, it appeared one of more of the other guests in our room was making the hostel a home. We saw laundry baskets and someone had even set up a gaming system in their bunk. Indeed, one other guest in our room greeted us saying they d been there for a long time and that they basically live here .Daily deep cleaning, enforcement of property policies, and air freshener could go a long way here. Overall, a cheap place to crash for a night in Greenville, but next time I think I ll stay in a hotel.

I barely stayed here for one night because I was just passing through town, so I really can't speak to the location. The rooms, bathroom, and common area were very clean and comfortable. Great price. The only complaint I have was that I booked the four bed female dorm with the bunk beds. I KNOW I booked a bottom bunk, because I am a bigger girl and I knew I would have trouble with the top bunk. I arrived late and was the last to arrive for the room and they told me I was on the top bunk. I couldn't prove it because the confirmation email you receive when you book doesn't specify the bunk, but the choice IS on the website. It was disappointing and extremely difficult for me to get into the top bunk. It was embarrassing. I felt that I was trapped because there was no way I was getting up there twice. Luckily I woke up at 4am and just got on the road. Please give people what they book.

I'm rating Modal five stars - the room is rated as a 4 but it's more like a 4.5 honestly! Though I want to be transparent about a few things. I am a fairly laidback traveler, so I figured staying in hostel (though a private room and bath because I do like my privacy) would be okay with me. And it was hence the 5 stars for my own personal needs! But if you are someone that doesn't want to be bothered with noise from others, or doesn't want to stay in an older building, then this might not be the best place for you.I stayed in the double queen private room since it was the only private available. The room is right off of the main sitting area and front check-in, and across the bottom of the stairs from at least one of the shared rooms. It got incredibly noisy at times, and at one point a guest was yelling "Babe!" right outside my door for like a minute straight, then proceeded to yell profanities for about another half minute. While I'm not personally offended by this kind of language, I do get easily distracted and it was a bit of an interruption for me as I was relaxing with a book. This is not the hostel's fault, it was more of a lack of consideration from this other guest, but at the same time, I don't know what was going on with them so I don't want to judge. It just grabbed my attention as to how easy it is to be unintentionally engaged in what others even staying in the private room. The doorways and windowsills are a bit old and drafty. My toilet was dirty when I got there. Not terribly dirty but not cleaned from the prior inhabitant, when everything else honestly seemed spotless. All of this being said, I think this is a pretty great place to stay. It's really close to many restaurants and downtown Greenville - definitely walkable but if you aren't comfortable walking, a cheap Lyft ride away. The bed in my room was so freaking comfortable, I want to know the brand and model so I can buy one for my house. I saw another reviewer mentioned the beds being really hard. I do like hard, firm beds so if you're a "softie" then maybe you won't enjoy as I did. For me though, I got such a good night's sleep. The rain shower... absolutely amazing. Cute decorations, lovely outdoor area, etc. The value on this place is great especially considering most other places I was looking were close to double the price I paid here. I highly recommend but only if you're okay with a different kind of lodging experience.Rooms: Comfortable beds, clean linens, makeup towels (black so you don't get the white ones all messy), amazing shower, blackout type curtains [private room & bath]Nearby activities: Walkable or a short drive away from many activities, including downtown restaurants, shops, etc.Safety: I felt very safe in both the area and in the hostelWalkability: A mile or so from downtownFood & drinks: Church's chicken right across the street. coffee and pastries at cafe area. pantry items for purchase in the kitchen. free breakfast for 2 hours in AM but I already forgot the time frame sorry! one free cup of coffee from kitchen per day of stay. no outside food or drink allowed in your room, shared or private. no alcohol in rooms per state law.

I had a very good week at the Greenville Modal, from the moment I walked in with my reservation I was kindly greeted. My dorm bed was very clean and cozy. The locker was large and electronically lockable. The guests were very nice. I felt safe, and my car parked on site was safe, better than regular motels. The staff was helpful and friendly. Thursdays they had a very nice gathering with music and art gallery. I enjoyed my stay and recommend for anyone needing a good place to stay. They even have a barista to serve up coffee!Rooms: Comfy clean with two fluffy pillows. Bedding and a sliding curtain. Light and USB electric outlet in each bed area. Co Ed dorm. Everyone respected each other and privacy.Nearby activities: Good food nearby within a short drive and walkable or by bike.Safety: Everyone respected each other and privacy. Cameras and policies in place. No disrespectful activity allowed which made it safe to stay here.Walkability: Nice area to walk to fast food or other.Food & drinks: Complimentary bagels or toast, some bananas or apples, healthy fruit bars offered for breakfast between 7:30-9:30am. Friendly text reminders each morning. Coffee barista comes in 8am-8pm.

I decided to see a weeknight show at the Peace Center and didn't want to deal with driving more than an hour back home late at night by myself...nor did I want to pay $100+ for a one night hotel room I wouldn't spend too much time in. Enter: Modal! TBH...I wish I had planned on spending more time there! The staff was kind, the bed was comfy, and the storage area was large and secure. Parking was easy and convenient. There were multiple sinks and bathrooms to access. I didn't get up in time for breakfast, but the kitchen was spacious and well stocked with some drinks and snacks that could be purchased anytime. The back deck was delightful and where I will definitely be spending some time next time I visit.I wish there were a little more separation between the cafe area and some of the rooms, but given the open time for the cafe, it's not too big of a deal, especially for the price.I will be back! :)Walkability: I felt comfortable walking to the Peace Center by myself, but I would not / did not walk home alone after dark. Lyft was like $7 though, so not bad!

As I traveled back to Greenville, searching for an affordable place to stay for a week has never been easier. From the moment you walk into Modal which is located at such a great location near many stores being right in downtown the Aroma of Coffee catches your nose. The art work in the gallery and through out the halls and rooms are pleasing to the eye. The service is fantastic. I would recommend to all traveling in and out of Greenville, SC

This place is exceptional. I ve been here once before and this is the only place I want to stay in Greenville. It s clean, it s friendly, it s incredibly affordable, the kitchen is big and fully stocked with dishes! (I cook a lot and love when I can on the road), and there are lots of spaces to work, chat, rest, and more. Breakfast and a cup of coffee included in the mornings is truly appreciated, delicious and fresh! If you ve never tried staying in a hostel, try this place! It s one of the nicest hostel I ve ever stayed in and cannot recommend it highly enough. I met Joe this time and I can tell he cares about his guests and creating not only a safe haven to rest, but also crafting a good vibe for creatives, travelers, and adventurers from all over. Book your stay here and I bet you ll love it as much as I do!

Modal was the perfect place to stay for my boyfriend and I traveling to Greenville. We booked the private room with a queen bed and private bathroom. It was over $100 cheaper than the hotels in the area. The room was small but it had everything we needed. Easy to come and go as we pleased. Easy check in. Super clean. Quiet at night. Super quick drive to downtown or walk if you re feeling it! I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

I love the aesthetic of Modal, and the shower was the most amazing ever. I booked a private room with my husband while we were in town working. Very nice. Super comfortable bed and pillows. The natural light window up high did leave it a bit bright for sleeping, so I'd use an eye cover if you're sensitive to that. Great staff, coffee shop and common areas.

This place is amazing, the staff are beyond friendly, the living areas are kept so clean and its such a beautiful place to be. It is in a very convenient location, near downtown Greenville. The owner is a wonderful gentleman who's done a great job with his establishment and I'm so thankful to have been able to stay here and would definitely come again if needed and will be recommending to everyone.

Don t let the word hostel fool you - this is a Greenville gem! Modal is super quaint with a modern flare. The private rooms are quite nice. Rooms and bathroom are clean. The rainfall shower is amazing. The common areas are clean and welcoming. The staff was nice and other patrons were nice as well. The location is prime. It was only a 5 min Uber or a 10-15 walk to Main Street. For the cost and overall experience, staying at Modal is a no-brainer.

If I visit Greenville again, I would happily stay here again. I wish that there was a way to close the blinds to block out the morning sunlight for the Ambedo room, but that's the only conplaint I had. The layout of the common spaces is fantastic, and the kitchen is perfect for cooking. The breakfast was lovely (drip coffee, fresh fruit, eggs, and bagels). The night we got there, they had a Pups & Pride event, which was fun. Would absolutely recommend this place for a comfortable, safe, fun place to stay in Greenville.

I never stayed at a hostel prior to Modal, so I was a little nervous at first but it was a great experience and I d definitely stay there again and recommend Modal to anyone that s visiting the Greenville area. It was only $35 versus all the other hotels around the area being $100+ per night! Everybody was very friendly and welcoming and the coffee was one of the best I ve ever had!Nearby activities: Downtown Greenville was so fun! Lots of good restaurants and bars. The bridge/waterfall area was so nice at night time. Definitely a great vibe all around.Food & drinks: Gather GVL is right down the street. Awesome drinks and food.

Modal is everything: great staff in Jordan, Kevin, Mabel, and a dude with curly, greenish hair who never gave me his name (I didn t ask, my fault.). The rooms are spotless, the cafe goers are wonderful people, the space is well done, and the lattes are fire. Even my roommates have been great. Highly recommend. It s a rare, well-run jewel in the downtown area. Couldn t be more happy with my experience.
