Rick who owns McDowell's is hands down the most Honest, Helpful & knowledgeable automechanic we've met! Everyone should go to his shop for auto repairs. McDowell's is top notch above & beyond Excellent service !!!! Great to have a Trusted Mechanic here!! Thank you Rick!!!

Today was the first time I used Rick s service. He did a 7500 mile service. First thing I noticed is Rick runs the whole show by himself. Answering the phone, keeping the entire shop clean and tighty. The bathroom, waiting area all clean stocked.I arrived early and there he was ready for me! Such a pleasure to deal with Rick. i live in Newport and have for many years. Rick the owner is the most honest mechanic you will find in the state of Oregon. he is a one man shop, and i took it to him after going to Les Schwab in Newport about two weeks ago. Les Schwab said they could not find what was wrong. Les Schwab even left two lug nuts off a tire and put me in danger. Rick was very busy but took the time to diagnose my Toyota SUV free of charge and within less than one hour fixed what was wrong and only charged me $40.00, no parts were needed. if you need your auto fixed it is worth waiting to see him, as his honesty, credibility and prices cannot be beat. i have never seen any one work as fast as Rick. i will never take my SUV any where else.

Wow, this shop really got me out of a pinch! I was visiting friends in Newport, on a vacation, and just before we were supposed to head home I noticed my battery light on. I was worried about the long drive and not knowing what the problem was, so I called some shops and this guy said he didn't charge for diagnostics and to come on in, so I did! Within minutes he realized that my alternator was out and that I probably wouldn't be able to make it back to Portland on 75% battery at night. Thankfully the part was in stock at the auto shop next door and he was able to put it in right then. So, two hours and $385 later my car had a shiny new alternator and we were able to make it home safely!Only downside was that we had to pay in cash because his credit card machine was down. This is definitely a small town stop behind on technology, the look I got when I asked if the mechanic had a Venmo or PayPal is the same look I get from my Grandpa when I ask if he tried resetting the WiFi router when it didn't work. But, can't have it all!There was a cute sitting area too!

I have been taking my vehicles to Rick at McDowell s for many years and he is the only mechanic that I trust. He is extremely professional, knowledgeable and honest. Super impressed with the new owner Rick. Been with the business several years and really knows a lot about cars and car problems. He has expanded with a newer lift which allows for more services. The good news is he works on lots of foreign models some shops won't touch. He does not do warranty work but has great price structure. Tribal Owned!

We were driving through Oregon , visited the lighthouse in Newport and our car battery simply died. The park ranger jump started it but we didn't want to take any chances therefore stopped by at this shop . Rick, the owner was more than polite, courteous. He told us he works alone and was very busy but would jump our car as we had turned it off when we pulled up at his shop and it wouldn't start. When he opened the hood, he knew exactly what was wrong, the battery wasn't dead but was leaking and there was corrosion. He then cleaned everything, fixed the problem and spent almost 25-30 minutes with us and refused to accept any payment from us. Good people still exist in this world and Rick is an example. we are very grateful .Service: Battery

This will be my go to auto shop... and I will refer everyone that I can. Got an appointment really fast. Work was completed promptly and very reasonable price. This is the cleanest auto shop I have ever seen in my life. My car runs like new. I could not be happier. Thanks Rick

I just arrive from Colorado and my truck was making strange noises and when I looked up repair shops McDowell s was closest. I went there and explained my problem to Rick (who turned out to be the owner) and he Immediately put my truck up on the rack, discovered a loose control arm bolt, repaired it, and told me there was no charge. He even checked the other suspension bolts and put Loctite on all of them. I don t believe in something for nothing so I paid him anyway, but appreciated the professionalism and the helpfulness for somebody (me) that was just passing through town with a sudden mechanical problem and his willingness to quickly see to it and willingness not to even charge for it.

We planned a trip along Oregon coast and drove from Calgary Alberta Canada to Portland first. My Honda Pilot developed a serious leak when we arrived at Newport. I took my car first thing in the morning to this shop and Rick told us he was fully booked. After he listened to our story, he agreed to check our car first. He found out the problem but unfortunately there was no parts available in town he needed to fix it. Then he added the fluids, told us how we should pay attentions to this problem and we should be OK to resume our trip. It took Rick an hour or so to do all this, but he did not charge a penny for all he did. Now we are already back home in Canada, Safe and sound.Thank you Oregon for all the beautiful scenes and Thank you Rick for your professionalism and your Kindness!

SO THANKFUL for Rick! I was on vacation and he was able to squeeze me in last minute, get my vehicle in safe enough condition to get back home and charges were *more* than reasonable. It is no surprise he has such great reviews, this is a quality business.Based on my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him for a second.

Absolutely amazing experience! First off did not charge a dime to correctly diagnose our issues, second he helped us save money by suggesting getting what we needed from a wrecking yard and lastly he did a great job of replacing the parts and let us know what all the issues were he found and showed us exactly what was wrong with the parts we replaced after removed. He is very thorough and is great at what he does.

We spent a weekend in Newport and on the last night there was a heck of a storm. In the morning our trusty old vehicle wouldn't start. I googled McDowell's and he said he would try to look at it. We got a tow and when we arrived he started working on it right away even though he seemed busy. After an hour or so he got it started and running smooth. We were very happy that we wouldn't be stuck in Newport but he wouldn't write up a bill because he said he "wasn't sure why it hadn't started and I haven't actually fixed it." I managed to give him some cash as a tip but couldn't believe he wasn't charging us.( BTW, we have the same last name but are not related)

Shop is very clean and organized. Rick is great. Work was done faster than expected at a very reasonable rate. If my car needs any more work, I will definitely go back.

My car was Leaking fluid from underneath the car, close to the front tire, on the passenger side. It appeared to be water but I had to drive back to Utah so I was a bit worried. I called the shop and explained what it was doing. The guy who I talked to said it was probably condensation. I made an appointment and Rick looked at my car and show me the hose the water was coming out of, which he said was normal. He confirm it was condensation. That put me at ease. He did this at no charge. I would highly recommend this shop.

Fantastic Service! When my check engine light came on I started to worry but Rick at McDowell's helped me right away and found the loose wire causing the trouble. He fixed it in a couple of minutes, reset the light and didn't even charge me.

My wife and I drove in from Utah, our expedition was miss firing, we were all the way in Portland and I called a few shops and nobody there could get us in. I called McDowells and he said he could get us in the next day, he had it fixed in about an hour. Great service would highly recommend.

THE PRICE AND SERVICE ARE TOPS!Called about getting brake work done on trip from Memphis, TN. Told me to come right in, also gave an estimate for repair costs that was better than fair. Drove in, they started service immediately and when finished, the final bill was exactly the same as the estimate.Wish I could convince the owner to move to Memphis, I'd use him for all my repair work!

I got hole in my heater hose as soon as I got to the beach. Rick was able to get me in right away, fixed it up within an hour, and even gave me directions how to get to the bay while I waited. Awesome experience!

Update: my brakes were severely damaged and cost as much to repair either way. I did not understand how bad off the brake system was it is fixed now but I apologize for being upset. I legitimately did not understand that he wasn t kidding it really did need an 800 brake job everything was shot brakes pads rotars calipers and tires.

My family from Edmonds, WA. arrived in Newport for the Christmas Holiday on Thursday 12/23/2021. That night we had dinner at Mo's and upon leaving after dinner, my car would not go into gear. It was late by then and very cold. We were stranded and panicked. I called a tow truck and the driver said the lower ball joint had gone out, pulling the drive shaft out of the transmission. I had no idea what in the world I was going to do. I looked online for an Auto Repair business to have the car towed to. I saw McDowell's with a five star rating and had it towed there. We took a cab to our Hotel room and left a message with McDowell's to call asap. Next day on Christmas Eve, Rick called and said he would look for the parts. I told him I had to be back home on Monday and he said he would see what he could do. Long story short...he got the parts and it was ready Monday in time to leave, with a price that was much less than expected. I had heard so many horror stories of out of towners being ripped off by repair shops in different areas. To say the least, I was overjoyed and thank full for Rick, being the professional and honest person he is. There may be other repair sops in Newport but there is only ONE to go to-McDowell's.Service: Steering & suspension repair

Had some work done on a friend's car today. They troubleshooeted the issue quickly and diagnosed the problem. Was in and out service. Very friendly staff and very well rounded mechanic. Highly recommended for any automobile service.

I have blood sweat and tears in this shop god rest his soul the man who built it my grandfather and the man who raised me around it my dad and hero lucky Robert McDowell and my grandmother oh the memories I could tell about this place Tim bushnell was a good friend of mine and will be for ever missed the only mechanic that we had that deserved to run the shop and knew how to one day it will be owed by the mcdowells again.
