They do quality work and more importantly, care about keeping their customers. I have been happy working with Lang for the past few years and hope to keep doing so for years to come.

This is my first time rating a business online, but I felt like I needed to warn people that LANG AUTOMOTIVE IS A GROUP OF SCAM ARTISTS. My power steering was leaking in my truck and they told me they had fixed my pressure hoses. I picked it up after hours and I didn't even have to make it out of the parking lot to know the "quality work" they did. I could hardly steer the wheel. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe there was just air in the line. I popped the hood after I squealed home and the power steering reservoir was empty...they had charged me for filling it. I refilled it, and the next morning drove to the store...and I could hardly turn the wheel again. There was a big puddle of power steering fluid where it had sat the night before. I called them, but they could not get me into the shop again for another month. In that time, I probably put five gallons of power steering fluid in my truck. I would fill it up completely full, and within a few miles it was empty again.I thought that since it was THEIR mess-up, they would fix the issue free of charge...like a reputable business would do...but nope. Instead they charged me an additional $400.00 bucks to change a hose (on top of the $600.00 they had already charged me for making it worse!!). When I tried to refute this, he lied to me, and said that I must of put a hole in the hose after they fixed it the first time...apparently after turning the key on when picking it up the first time, since it leaked worse from the moment they "fixed it." The guy was extremely rude and arrogant, and would not give me my keys until I paid for the bill. I could go on, but it was honestly the most frustrated I had been in a long time. My hope is that anyone reading this will not make the same mistake that I did. LANG automotive is a terrible business and their staff has no idea what they are doing. Wish I had just done it myself. If I could rate in the negatives I would.Service: Steering & suspension repair

GET A SECOND OPINION. Lang quoted us over 3x the standard cost for a pretty basic repair. The good: Lang saw our car promptly when every other mechanic in the Bozeman area was booked out for at least a week. We were grateful for that.We took our car in because the air conditioning abruptly stopped working in the middle of an interstate road trip. Lang diagnosed it as a problem with the air compressor and removed a piece of shredded belt so it wouldn't cause further damage to the engine. They charged $60 to tell me what the problem with the AC was.The bad: They quoted $2800 to replace the compressor and belt and couldn't get the parts for a week. I didn't have time to wait around a week so I politely declined the service as well as thinking the price seemed a little steep. When I took my car into my local mechanic back home, they quoted the replacement at $780 which is right in the ballpark of what Google estimated for parts and labor. So Lang was going to charge us triple the cost for the same service. Not sure if Lang was trying to majorly take advantage of us, didn't want to do the work, or this is just standard practice in Bozeman, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth.EDIT: My local mechanic ended up doing the repair for under $700 and let me know the part had a 2-year warranty in case it stopped working. I've since driven over 700 miles on my car with the AC going the whole time, and it's worked like a charm. I can't speak for why Lang would feel the need to unnecessarily replace the whole dang system, but all I can do is hope no one else gets cheated on unnecessary repairs. Definitely avoid this mechanic.Service: Air conditioning

Had a terrible experience with Lang Automotive. The morning of my repair, I was told by Jeremy that the cost of my repair would be around $2800 for front and rear brake pads and rotors, rear calipers, front caliper sleeves, both upper and lower ball joints, and tie rods. He told me the tie rods weren't necessary so I could take $1000 dollars off for a total of around $1800 dollars. I agreed to the service at 8:30 in the morning. At 3 in the morning the same day, I received a call the truck was done. I got to the shop and my bill was $2800 dollars. Mike explained to me the cost Jeremy was talking about was the cost of just the front end, not the cost of the entire job. I found it confusing and shady that the last price communicated to me over the phone was $1800 dollars, the price I was certain was the full price of the service. To make matters more frustrating, the invoice showed 10.8 total hours of labor. (7 hours to replace upper/lower ball joints, front brake pads and rotors; 3 hours to replace rear brake pads, rotors and calipers; 0.8 hours to flush entire brake system). Mike told me one mechanic worked on the truck. With that in mind, the maximum amount of time the mechanic would have worked on my truck is 6.5 hours. That is a 66% markup on labor.Mike gave me another 10% discount on parts, which brought me down to $2,578. However, these guys made money on my brake and ball joint job. I was visibly and verbally frustrated with the communication, and given the huge markup on labor, I couldn't believe they wouldn't knock off some of the labor to reflect the time it actually took to perform the work. I am a younger guy and I believe I was completely taken advantage of.

Very happy with the service, speed and the quality of work. They were honest and straightforward about what needed to be done on my truck, and didn't beat around the bush. Will definitely go back if/when I need another fix.

TL;DR: Lang severely overcharges you, tries to BS you to create work, belittles you to justify it, and in my case, billed me without my consent. If you re interested in the full encounter:I recently took my 1996 Chevy pickup to Lang with an electrical issue. The ignition control module had recently failed, I replaced it, and then a week or so later the ignition switch failed, then within a couple days the ECM1 fuse blew. I replaced the fuse and a day later the coil went. I figured there must be a short causing the components to fail but I was unable to find anything so I took the vehicle to Lang Automotive in Bozeman. I asked them to look at the current issue, but much more importantly, find the reason it failed. When they called to say it was fixed I asked if they had found what had caused it to overload, or if it was the coil itself that was the cause of the previous items failing. They avoided a direct answer and told me they had test driven it and it was ready to go. They charged me $373.78. That seemed overly excessive to me for diagnosing and installing a part I could purchase for $18.59 and could install myself in less than a half hour, but if the truck was all set then I could swallow the charge. Within 20 minutes of leaving the shop the ECM1 fuse blew and the truck died again.I towed it back to Lang. The next day John explained to me that someone had been in there and wired in a trailer brake controller and a trailer plug and they had used the wrong wiring and the wrong connectors but that Lang could fix it, for an estimate of $1000. Now, Lang and I both know I installed the controller, by talking about some idiot third party they are able to be condescending without appearing to attack me directly. However, I had used connectors that came with the controller specifically for that use. Also, the controller and trailer plug continued to run with the ECM1 fuse removed, so they were not running through that circuit in any case. So, $1000 for a make-work project, I declined that offer.Next John told me that my headlight wire harness and switch needed to be replaced, estimate $400. I had never had any problems with my lights and knew they were not on the ignition circuit either so I once again declined. Then Lang found a loose tach wire from an old remote start system that had been removed. At this point I thanked him and asked if I owed them anything, John said he would call me back. I called my son who works nearby and asked him to pick the truck up at the end of the day. Well, John never did call me back, but let my son take the truck and, without getting my consent or consulting my son, charged my credit card an additional $338.50 - they still had the number from the previous day s billing. When I talked with John about the excessive overcharge I was told, You people are your own worst enemy, meaning people who do what they can on their own.The truck ran fine for a few days, then it died on the road. While checking it I found that the transmission dipstick tube was completely broken off about a foot down, just above the mounting bracket. The only thing holding it from falling off was the dipstick itself running through it. This isn t something that just brakes in two. The tube however does run about an inch directly over the top of the ignition coil. Obviously I can t say for certain, but the only explanation I can think of is they pushed the tube out of the way to replace the coil. Maybe it broke then, maybe they just weakened it and road vibration finished the job.Luckily, Lang had never fixed the problem I took it in to them for and the truck died before it lost enough fluid to take the transmission out.The great thing about Lang Automotive is that, at least in my case, you can get your vehicle in the next day, well now I know why. Over $700, the problem was never even remotely close to being fixed, I was basically called a fool, and they almost cost me a transmission.
