Very poor communication and very expensive. Took my honda here to have brake replacements, was not told about "wait" appointments while scheduling (even after asking how long it would take because I would be waiting in the city) and was told to drop off at 9am. They didn't even look at my car til 1:30pm, and when I was finally spoken with about pricing, it was far above what I had been led to expect. So I spent most of day waiting, walking around in the cold because of their poor communication, and in the end couldn't even afford the work I had asked for. Very upset with the experience.

I brought my '13 Subaru Legacy to Japanese Auto Professionals to diagnose an electrical parasitism issue (car drains its own battery after being shut off, requiring it to be jumped); the team at Japanese Auto Pro's were reasonable, thorough and extremely knowledgeable about my car, and they also helped me figure out a low-cost workaround to keep my older car on the road. I would not bring my car back to Dunning Subaru's service dept (who I believe caused the issue) but I would definitely recommend and return to Japanese Auto Pro's Service.

Always great service from front of the house with Dave to the back! Mechanics are very thorough. Reasonably priced and honest to work with from my experience. They have earned my trust! Super nice people!

I called Japanese Auto after my dealer quoted a price for replacing pads and rotors. It was expensive. Japanese Auto quoted a price that saved me 250$. The repair was top notch, everyone was pleasant and professional. I am very happy with the work and will be a repeat customer.Service: BrakesService: Brakes

I brought my car to the dealer for an oil change (only because I had a coupon). While there, they said I needed to replace the rear brakes on my Subaru Forester. I took my car here and Gaige and Dave were great! They told me I have another 15k-20k miles before I need to consider replacing the brakes and didn't charge me anything. I know where I'll be taking our two cars from now on!Service: Brakes

Take your car here first!!! They are absolutely the best. The most honest and professional auto shop I've ever been to- they do fantastic work and never try to upsell you on anything you don't need. They've saved me well over $1000 that I would have spent at the dealership. They really do right by their customers.Services: Transmission, Exhaust, Auto engine diagnosticServices: Transmission, Exhaust, Auto engine diagnostic

I had a WONDERFUL experience here, and I plan on coming back for any future work on my Hyundai. Before coming here, I had taken my car to a dealer with an axle issue. The dealer quoted a price of several thousand dollars and took over two weeks to make repairs that didn t even fix the main issue. I then came to Japanese Auto, and they took less than a day to identify and fix the issue, and charged a fraction of the price. The people who fixed my car were honest and friendly, and gave me several suggestions on future maintenance for my car. I wish I had found this place sooner!!

Saved me thousands and didn t even take my car in. The most honest auto mechanic. I didn t even pay a dollar.I explained my salutation to Dave and he said I could have it fixed but it would be $1,500. But then he told me it wouldn t affect the car in any way and recommended I just left it be. I appreciate the honesty. This is a stand up shop.Services: Exhaust, Auto engine diagnostic

Been coming here since I moved to Ann Arbor around 5 years ago and couldn't recommend this place more. They shoot straight, work fast, and have kept my car humming along beautifully.

Reading the reviews, sure sounds like the place I know -- honest, helpful, straight shooting, avoid unnecessary repairs -- trustworthy guys/place always. Dread the thought of them ever closing shop.

Took my 22 year old Camry there for a safety check and inspection to see if all was good. Dave was great! One thing needed replacement at a cost of $245, but he told me if I didn t drive crazy not to waste my money on the repair that it would be fine. No upsell and fair pricing!! Would go back in a heartbeat.UPDATE: went back a year later for a brake job. Was quoted about $520 go to pay, it s $100 LESS!! Dave told me it didn t as long as they thought, so they charged me less. See these people if you have a Toyota, Nissan, Honda or Subaru. Honest mechanics are hard to find! Thanks Japanese auto.

We moved from Ann Arbor to Traverse City but still bring our cars here for service. I have learned the best car experience means never taking it back to the dealer and finding a good independent service provider. These guys and gals are simply the best! always quality work and never try to sell you work you don't really need. Pricing is always fair and service is always done in a timely manner. Keep up the good work.

These guys are the best. I will not take my Honda any where else. This past year Brandon and his staff where able to fix my CRV after the dealership in Brighton could not. I had taken it into the dealership multiple times for the same issue and spent a couple thousand dollars but the problem remained. Took it to Japanese Auto Repair and within 5 minutes they found the problem and repaired it within hours and saved my money.I returned today because my car is making another noise and I am heading to Florida this weekend and wanted to make sure it was safe to drive. My car has over 270k miles on it...they weren t unable figure out where the noise was coming from but assured me that it was safe to drive. For the age of the car it s in great condition. Good enough for me. They spent several hours on the car and did not charge me.If you want outstanding professional service you can trust, go see Brandon and these guys at Japanese Auto Repair. You won t be sorry!

After receiving a $1,300 quote from a dealership for a problem I didn't know I had and totally unrelated to the problem I had brought my car in for I decided to check out Japanese Auto in Ann Arbor to get a second opinion. I was blown away by their straightforward, honest, and respectful treatment. After a thorough inspection, they told me the problems the dealer was referring to are very minor and pose no safety concern at all. For this, they charged me exactly nothing. I will definitely be going back!Service: Steering & suspension repair

Ben and his staff are super !They replaced the cam in my Dodge Ram.They kept me in the loop as to what was going on and didn't put in any unnecessary parts. Showed me the bad parts and explained what happened. Got me back on the road in great time. Price was a lot less than I was expecting. I give them 5 stars and would VERY strongly recommend them. Probably the most bang for your buck in the Toledo area. Thanks Ben

A few years back was quoted an absurd amount for brakes at the dealer - didn't realize how absurd until I went to Japanese Auto instead. They ordered the right parts, and then did an excellent job for literally half the price, and finished much faster than I had expected (and way shorter than I would have waited at the dealer). Call 1-2 weeks before you want scheduled service done - they are busy because they are good.

These guys are awesome and they always take great care of me. It brings me so much peace of mind that I know I can bring my car here and they will be honest with me about what needs or will need to be fixed, without me having to worry about being pressured to dump money into my car that I don't need to. Reasonable prices to boot. I would definitely recommend!

Sharing my experience here as it may help others. I have a Subaru Forester that was due for its 60K service. Some other shops gave me outrageous quotes before even looking at the car. I understand that shops can pull the Subaru Recommended Maintenance schedule, which consists mostly of replacing main fluids and the spark plug. Brandon took the car in actually looked at each fluid and gave me honest feedback of the current condition and when he would recommend them to be replaced. In short, I didn't need to do anything at my 60K milestone and Brandon didn't charge me anything. When I am due for spark plug and transmission fluid in another 20-30K miles, I will be coming back as they have sincerely earned my business!

Time and again Japanese auto has proven themselves to be trustworthy and reliable. Today is the second time where I took my car in for an issue that seemed like it could be big, but because they found that it was a small thing (even though it still took them some time to find the issue), they weren't going to charge me anything for it. Of all the places I've been to for auto repair, none has ever been so honest and generous. I definitely highly recommend them.

If you want integrity, honesty and quality, you'll find it with Jay and Brandon at Japanese Auto Professional Service. I had a recently purchased used Subaru Forester 11 months prior and it was due for its 105,000 scheduled maintenance. This is one of the more expensive interval services, especially with the timing and drive belts included in this service. Although, they could have done the service as requested, a full inspection was performed and I was advised the prior owner must have had this service performed before the car was sold. A complete surprise to me. They completed a full review of the car, and found it to be in very good condition, and even settled an irritating rattle issue. They could have simply performed the service I requested and I would have never know otherwise. A customer for life....Thanks Guys!

I'm posting this review 10 years later. So imagine what a lasting impression my experience left! I was a Grad student when I visited this repair shop."Before I took my 2002 Honda civic in, I had low expectations. My car had spent a month at Collex Collision and was rattling. At Japanese Auto, my problem was identified, shown to me and fixed within 30min.I thought the days of finding a real mechanic were gone. But these people are real. And they are wonderful warm, genuine people who are very good at what they do. God bless their hearts."

I had taken my car to another mechanic in AA, and they requested that I needed to change my breaks immediately or it would be dangerous. This other place was asking me $1000 for a brake change, so I didn't trust it and bought the parts online in amazon for 300. Then took it to Japanese Auto to put the brakes on. Surprisingly, they call me mid-morning that there was nothing wrong with my breaks and that they had half of their life left. Impressed on how honest this guys are. Thanks JAS!

Solid repair shop!!! Brought my beater Civic in for a new timing belt and a small laundry list of other things to fix that I didn t have time for. They were very professional, punctual, polite and professional! (did I say that already?) Now my car runs like the finely crafted machine the Japanese folks intended it to be. I really appreciate the honesty and their ability to relate to the customer! I ll bring my car back here every time! You re missing out by not using these guys...

Japanese Auto is a great place for all types of car maintenance. They've helped us take care of regular service at way less cost than Dunning Subaru! 10/10 would recommend. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The prices are super fair and they don't try to get you to do unnecessary work on your car. Can't say enough good about Japanese Auto!

Had to get a last minute job done on my tires and oil. I called all over the place and they were the only ones that could help me in such short notice. They quoted me an hour, it only took 45 minutes. Superb work and I truly appreciate the professionalism. They have my future business!Services: Tires, Oil changeServices: Tires, Oil change

Thanks for finding the parts and replacing my brake pads and rotors at a fair price on the day I walked in to your shop! And on a Friday afternoon! I know I got lucky because you had some last minute cancellations. I appreciate your advice too. Will definitely call in the future!

I've used these guys for over 10 years, it's so great to have a trusted mechanic and it's no wonder they win best mechanic in Ann Arbor so frequently. I'm now about a 4 hour drive from Ann Arbor but will still bring my car here when I'm in town. Once, when they knew they were going to be closed, they referred me to a different mechanic and he was great/professional as well. If you've got a japanese car, these are the guys to service it!

They have earned my trust with both my vehicles and I won't go anywhere else. Took our minivan in to get the timing belt replaced and Joe said he would inspect the hoses and replace any if they needed it (versus the dealership, who declared that you should always replace the hoses when you replace the timing belt so they can pad the work to north of $1500); the van didn't need any hoses replaced, and the timing belt replacement was less than $500. He told me of a problem with my exhaust (the pipe is slowly rusting out) and did a fix that will last me a couple of years cheaply while telling me that eventually the whole thing will need to be replaced for $1200. I've found Joe and his staff to be honest, and they really take a minimalist approach to auto repair. My experience has been so good that I honestly doubt the negative reviews that are published here.

I d give 6 stars if I could. Brought my 2012 Honda Accord in here after getting a fishy estimate from Germain Honda - saying my alternator went out due to an oil leak from the spool valve. Brandon was honest and transparent with me from the start - showing me that there wasn t any oil on the alternator. Then he gave me a fair estimate on replacing it, and after running some diagnostics, he called me back and said that my alternator was just fine... saving me over $1,000 (Germain s original estimate).Brandon s a great guy who runs an honest company. Will definitely come back here when my car actually needs work!
