Summary: Reliable, leak free and more power. Incredibly well designed and executed. Not fast but faster. We Vanagon owners are incredibly fortunate to have companies like Bostig keeping our vans running in their 4th decade. The value in the kit is not just the parts. Its the vision, knowledge and engineering that got it designed and manufactured in all variations - syncro, auto, stick. There's a ton of knowledge and ability there that I don't have and will never have.Van: 1987 Westy, install mileage was 126K.Kit & Install: RG9 kit (automatic), high capacity oil pan, fill tower and thermostat housing. Issues were a few mechanical (exhaust manifold bolt length, long starter bolt didn't want to thread) and an issue with the SCT. Of the 5 or so tickets I opened during the install, I cancelled 2 after I found the correct documentation. 2 others were easily solved with explanation from Jim .Engine: The 44K engine boneyard came complete with all pulleys, brackets, AC compressor and a Ranger ECM.Me: I'm a technology nerd by trade but am mechanically inclined. I've replaced engines a few times in my life and worked on trucks some when I was in college. I'm no fabricator.Timeline: Install took around 80 hours over the winter 2018-2019 I worked only when the temps in the garage were reasonable.Documentation: Keeping in mind that Bostig is a very small business, I'd call the documentation excellent. Not perfect as its not always all in the same place, but there is more than enough information to get it all done.Reliability: During 6000 miles of driving we've had one issue, the large lug that connects to the alternator cracked off and disconnected. I was able to continue driving and found a great shop (DSC Foreign Car) in Westboro, Mass that had a new lug & crimped it on. That's it.Running temperature: Idle: 194 - 204 consistently. Highway: 197 to 217. . At 75MPH it sits around 215. Around town sees 210 if long stops - traffic lights traffic jams, etc. The dash gauge goes up past the red led but the temps stays no more than 210. I saw 219 one time (long grade, hot day, trying to hold my speed) only for about 10 sec.

I've have a Bostig conversion in my van for over 10 years. Jim has always been available to help with questions associated with their product. I highly recommend Bostig.

I purchased the Bostig swap kit for my 90 automatic Vanagon in 2017. Having minimal automotive repair experience beforehand, I was encouraged by the testimonials and decided to give it a try myself. The kit s manual and updates were easy to follow for a novice. I installed the new engine into my van completely by myself and there was no greater feeling than when I turned the key and it started up for the first time. 12,000 miles later and everything is still performing great. Service/support questions are handled promptly. If this handy lady could do it, I think (almost) anyone can!

I bought a second hand Bostig conversion kit for my vanagon in 2009. Even though I was not a direct Bostig customer in the beginning they provided excellent technical support on multiple occasions. I have since bought quite a few upgrades to that original kit from them. I couldn't be happier with their products, support and of course the super reliable Zetec engine I have had in my van for quite a few years now.

I not only have installed and maintain over 10 Bostig converted vans, but I own a Bostig powered Syncro. The conversion is my favorite in lighter weight, tin top vans, running stock or 15" rims. The Zetec is a great power plant and can be kept running smoothly quite easily once the correct mapping and tuning is done. The entire kit from Bostig is well thought out and delivered, with printable directions and can installed by those even without fancy tools or a ton of mechanical experience. I recommend driving in a Bostig converted Vanagon to truly feel how smooth and fun it is to drive.

I bought a van with a Bostig swap already done. This means I was not the customer who initially spent the money with this company in the first place. After my purchase of our van I had some technical questions, and also wanted to make some upgrades to this existing system, and honestly Jim (the owner) could not have been more helpful. Even though I was not the origina purchaser of the kit he was willing to take the time to send me links, explain things to me, and really help me. This speaks huge volumes to how a company, and owner, think and operate. They also seem very technical and able to be of help in many ways.I would 100% recommend this company to anyone interested in their parts.I will also add: as a custom car person quality is always key, along with function. Everything I have purchased from Bostig has had great quality, and built in a fashion to function properly, and last the life of my van.

The RG6 Bostig engine conversion is the best upgrade I ve done to my 87 VW Vanagon Westfalia Weekender. The instructions and videos are very good and Jim s personal support is, without question, the best in the business. Since doing my engine conversion the only work I ve done in the compartment has been oil and filter changes. Do not hesitate to sign up for the next group asap! I know it s doable in a weekend with a friend and the right tools because I ve done it and I m willing assist anyone near 98110 with their Bostig conversion as well. Thanks Bostig!!!

I was in RG-1, first system that went into production. I found the instructions easy to follow, and any misunderstandings are quickly fixed by asking Bostig. The system now has about 20k on it, I drive everywhere without a second thought. Can you do the installation? Yes, common sense is what's mostly required. I've done six of these and they keep getting easier. Highly recommend this.My friend did the Subi swap, and I have to say his experience has been very frustrating. He's an aircraft mechanic, much more hands-on then I am, and never gets to drive his VW, because it's been one thing after another. The Bostig really is reliable and super dependable, with parts easily obtained anywhere, and at a low price. (compared to VW parts.)Something to consider when figuring out the price is how much does ti cost to keep running? The Bostig definitely does NOT break the bank!

13 March 2019 - Easily the most reliable Vanagon engine conversion on the market. Straightforward install that literally anyone with a good attitude can do. I had never been a mechanic before I did mine in the fall/winter of 2015/16. Over three years later our van still runs like a champ! Just basic maintenance. If you want a reliable van that you can actually use and have fun with, this is your place. If you want over the top, poorly engineered bells and whistles that leave you waiting for a tow truck, go somewhere else.

Ha, you can tell how much people like Bostig because Jim politely asked for reviews and everyone responded immediately. I've had the Bostig in my Vanagon for about 18 months, including a 4,000 mile, 5 week trip from Texas to Wisconsin. Zero issues, smooth sailing the whole way.

Once I knew I wanted to own a Vanagon, and before I even bought the Vanagon, I bought the Bostig conversion. I have never regretted that decision. Five years later, the conversion and the company continue to serve me very well. RG1 with updates to RG9.

Here's a short recap of my story. My dream car since I was a young man was a Syncro Westfalia, but I couldn't afford one. After the kids were raised when I retired I gifted myself one. I searched. High and low and actually re-imported a US spec one with a great history. It was sold in May 1990 at Santa Monica VW to a retired German couple who used it to tour North America before returning with the van to Germany. The second owner was a young German dude (who I'm friends with on fb). Interestingly he used it in his business at the time of building skateboard parks. The third owner was French and the fourth owner was British. He listed the van on Samba and after detailed negotiations, including me sending the van to Syncro Spares (which is kind of the British equivalent of Go Westy), I brought it in May 2010 based on pictures and recommendation of Syncro Spares. The first time I saw it was when they flat bedded it to my house... so I am the 5th owner. It had 120,000 original miles on it, and because it had seen numerous winters, it's not a show car, but it was never my intent to use it intgat fashion. It is my daily driver and it is a work horse and still a beast. In 2012 with about 140,000 miles while returning from a trip to CA. (I live in South Florida) it developed the dreaded cylinder head leak that the 2.1 WBX was known for. So my search for repower started. I was patient and checked all options, rebuilding my WBX, buying a rebuilt WBX, Subaru, TDI, and Bostig. I decided on Bostig mainly due to the completeness of the kit, which includes a much more modern engine (Ford Zetec) new wiring, ECU, ... basically everything from intake to exhaust. And I liked the concept of DIY and learning the system. While I think I'm somewhat handy, I had never done anything like this before. Fast forward to today and the Bostig is running great. We've been back out to CA and I still use the van as my daily driver. Including (sorry this review is so long). I think the Bostig conversion system is a fantastic product that I recommend without hesitation. If anyone reading this would like to exchange more info I'd be happy to help.#bostig

I bought a Westy with a Bostig already in it, so I can't tell wrenching stories. But I've been very happy with the conversion-smooth, reliable and powerful. Jim's been very responsive the 4 or 5 times I've asked for help.

Bostig makes my Vanagon Westy fun and reliable! Bostig's kit and support have taken me coast-to-coast and internationally, and helped me learn my van inside and out. Two thumbs way up.

Been running the Bostig since 2011. Never did any mechanical work until this conversion. Jim and the team are great to work with. Be patient, read everything first, and you will be happy for many years to come.

Recently purchased a previously converted syncro and couldn t be happier. The power and reliability of this conversion is great. I can not begin to express how kind and helpful the bostig community is. Everyone is more than willing to help with any questions at the drop of a hat. Have not had the need to contact the company as of yet, but I have been assured many times that if I need their help, they will be there.

Have been an early adopter for the the conversion in 2009. Apart from some minor normal mechanical glitches that can happen on any vehicle I have had many trouble free miles each summer and have never been left stranded. The after service has been great with quick responses to my questions.

A complete conversion system biased towards reliability and user-serviceability. Yields useful performance gains that don't overwhelm the existing engineering envelope. This project can be undertaken by anyone; basic shade-tree mechanical abilities help but aren't necessary. The company stands by its product with ongoing willingness to trouble-shoot any issues that ever come up.

I installed RG9 Bostig Swap for my Vanagon. I can not sing the praises of the conversion loud enough. Well supported, well designed. Like legos for adults. Don't hesitate to make this swap!

Take a tired old Westfalia, stir in some love and a slightly used Ford engine, and watch the magic happen. I did it, and what was once a cranky and undependable vehicle is now a reliable magic bus that's much more fun to drive.

Great kit. Wouldn't hesitate to reach out to Bostig for any help. No problems with someone with little to no mechanical experience to install it.

Had an RG9 installed over the summer and couldn't be happier. Gone are the days of wondering when my stock engine will blow...

Had some shipping issues but they responded and were diligent about following up to get my order to me. I do think they initially screwed up the shipping. however they did make an effort to repair the transaction.
