i dropped my car off for service. they gave me a quote for repairs over the phone, and stated all repairs were required. after i paid and received my vehicle, the receipt showed that only half the repairs were required, and half were optional/recommended. will never go back here due to their dishonesty

The first honest, trustworthy, and reasonably priced auto mechanic shop I've ever come across! I've had a lot of bad experiences at other places over the years and Maine Auto is the first time I've ever had a place to go to that I trust. They even fixed someone else's mistake one time and didn't charge me for it. Honest, good people. 100% recommend

Been going to them for service since I moved to Portland in 1999, back then they were Midas. Never had to take it back to correct anything. I think they're why I drove my Corolla 300K miles and will probably do the same with my Rav4. Always accommodating and professional. They have taken care of everything from normal maintenance to brakes, exhaust, tires and tuneups. Never had a problem.

great customer service only by russ. russ is a great guy. talks to you like you re an actual human, which isn t always an experience i ve had with other mechanics. why is this a 3 star then? i drove my vehicle to the shop the second an issue occurred. i was told that this shop couldn t recreate the issue with the vehicle, and yet, the second I pull it out of the parking lot, the issue starts back up again. this felt very dishonest and kinda scummy considering, it apparently costs $150 to run diagnostics. i understand my vehicle is older and might cause more trouble than it s worth, clearly they didn t want to work on the car, which anyone would understand if the shop was honest about it. now I have no way to visit my family 2 hours away and i m stuck in maine with an unsafe vehicle and short $150. truly disappointed wouldn t go back.

Disappointing, called early July to get my state inspection done and they scheduled me for the last day of the month. They then proceeded to be surprised I had an appointment when I arrived. Grumpily handled me, then tried to up sell me tires to pass my inspection. 3 other mechanics have seen them, they all told me they are fine for a while longer. Seemed more like they had a gap in their calendar for tomorrow and wanted to keep their guys busy. At least for women, beware. Not fun when mechanics assume women don t understand cars, let alone tires.

These guys are the best! I've been taking my aging, high-mileage car to them for the past couple years and will never go anywhere else. They are all extremely polite and professional and the mechanics are top notch. They always take the time to explain exactly what's going on inside my car in a very detailed manner which is super helpful since I know nothing about auto repair. I've never felt pressured or ripped off, in fact their prices have always been extremely reasonable. Thank you Tim, Joe, and Co. for keeping my battleaxe running!

I've always had a great experience bringing my vehicle to Maine Auto Service. They get you in a timely manner and are honest about the work that needs to be done and what can wait a few months. I've brought my car here for the last 3-4 years and have always had excellent service. Tim is so kind and the other boys in the shop have always done great work on my vehicle.

First off I never write reviews, but the service here was so terrible I had to create an account to leave this. I went in for an inspection and the extremely rude and unfriendly workers tried to charge me 1250$ for repairs that would allow me to pass inspection. I brought my car to a different place for a second opinion and they told me it would cost only about 250$ to fix. This place is full of scam artists that cannot be trusted. They will rip you off, do not use them!!

Went for a simple inspection and they failed me and said my struts were leaking and needed to be replaced ASAP and quoted me hundreds of dollars. After the initial call, I said I would think it over and call back in an hour, only to receive another call shortly after from the mechanic actually working on my car to tell me what he saw and give me pricing information. I told him a different guy had just called, quoting me prices and telling me it was urgent and this guy was confused and frustrated his coworker did not communicate with him. It felt off, and my newer car had been driving great. I brought it to a different shop the next day for an inspection, and passed, and after the fact asked how my shocks/struts were, and was informed they were in good condition. Felt like a complete scam bringing my car here, will never be back.

I've been a customer here for about a year, and I've got nothing but good things to say about their professionalism and customer service. Every member of their team that I have worked with has been kind and well-informed. They explain issues clearly and respectfully, and they are very conscious and up front about costs. All of the work they have done on my vehicle (Volkswagen) has been well-executed. Plus, they offer free in-town rides!Maine Auto truly lives up to a "customer first" commitment.

took my car there twice to have an inspection because they didn't get around to it and I needed an inspection sticker. Yes I had appointments both time no they never called to let me know they never touched the car. charged $2800 for a plethora of repairs which they never did. I took the car to another shop and they said the brakes, sensors, and fuses had not been replaced. I ended up spending $2800 on snow tires and an inspection sticker and was told I needed to put another $1000 for an alignment. NEVER AGAIN BUYER BEWARE THESE GUYS SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN!NOT WASTING ANYMORE TIME WITH TIM AND JOE. ALREADY LOST $2800.

I have been a neighbor for years and just went in for the first time. I have always brought my car to the dealership, mostly for high quality customer service I have received at the dealership. Recently I had a rattling sound beneath my car and I though I would try Maine Auto Service out instead of going to the dealership. I do not regret it, Maine Auto Service was a top notch experience. Tim is a rare find; I had such an great customer service experience when working with Tim. You know the lost art of showing kindness and appreciation for your customers...well Tim has it down to a "T". Second, Chris is the auto shop was quick, friendly, and knowledgeable. Chris found the issue and quickly fixed it. I hope everyone gives Maine Auto Service a try, I feel very fortunate that I did. Thanks Tim and Chris!

BEWARE MAINE AUTO SERVICE! THEY TRIED TO RIP ME OFF $1125 FOR UNNEEDED REPAIRS! On Nov. 16, a piece of my muffler was scraping the road. I took it there, because it was near my house. I had to leave it there. They called me later to say my car was ready. When I picked it up, they told me that they had cut off the exhaust heat shield, which is not necessary, for free. They fixed my low tire. All fine and good. BUT THEY TOLD ME THAT MY POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LEAKING, AND WOULD COST $1000 TO FIX! THEN a 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT, FOR A TOTAL OF $1,125! They also said that 3 OTHER FLUIDS WERE LEAKING! THEY SAID THAT THE POWER STEERING REPAIR WAS NECESSARY FOR STATE INSPECTION. Luckily, I have a trustworthy mechanic (Cumberland Ave. Garage), which has always been honest with me, respectful, and does not overcharge. I phoned them, and they said to bring it in the next morning, to see if I need to make an appointment for repairs. When I took it to my mechanic, they said that THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR!!! THERE WERE NO LEAKS!!! AND POWER STEERING FLUID IS NOT ON THE STATE INSPECTION!!THEY WERE TRYING TO RIP ME OFF, FOR $1,125!!! I am 73 years old. They probably thought I would not be savvy about car repairs, and thus an easy mark. I am not savvy, but my mechanic of 25 years is, and has always been completely honest with me. If I had NOT had a trusty mechanic, they would have gotten $1,125 from me. THIS WOULD BE FRAUD!!!! BEWARE OF THESE PEOPLE!!!Services: Exhaust, Tires

I brought my vehicle in to get an inspection sticker and my snow tires installed. I had the work done on a Wednesday and the next Monday my rim/tire came off. I was driving 40mph and hit a bump and suddenly realized I had a major problem. I called Maine Auto Service from the side of the road and Joe, the manager, immediately asked me if I had brought it back at 25 miles to retighten the lugs. I asked Joe if they would take responsibility at 24 miles, or 26 miles or would I need to bring it in at exactly 25? He had no response. I told him I think that is a poor excuse for them failing to do their job property. He told me that they do not have a tow service so if I could get the vehicle in they would take a look. When I brought the vehicle in they were rude and dismissive. The manager kept mumbling about 25 miles but I really couldn t understand what he was saying. I am 37 years old and have never brought a car back to get my lugs retightened. The next day they called me and told me it would cost $300 to fix my car and it would take 3-4 days. I told them I completely disagree but had no option but to pay since I need my car. I had brought my car to Maine Auto Service for the past few years and was always satisfied. It seems they are a bit too busy now for both quality work and customer service. I will never go back.

I've been going to Maine Auto Service for a few years now and I always have a great experience. Everyone I have encountered has been honest and professional. It can be hard finding someone you trust to work on your car but I trust Maine Auto Service. Most recently I came in to have my car inspected following an accident where I was rear-ended. They were able to bring me in the very next day for an appointment. They inspected my car and performed a minor repair and did not charge me a cent. This level of customer service is hard to find.

Over the last 8 years I've brought a few different cars here, usually unexpectedly & no appt. They are great & always took time to hear me, check out the issue & explain what they found or would suggest & why. Very trustworthy & personable! Even if it's been a few years they still remember me & the cars I've brought! They are consistent & it is very reassuring to see the same faces year after year to have work done!

This place is a regional chain, but damn they do a wonderful job. I know cars well and they have been so generous. They even spent 30min doing some diagnostic and didn't charge me anything. Wonderful work and people.

Solid and honest service. I don t usually leave reviews but my two experiences bringing my car to Maine Auto have been a breath of fresh air. Initially I brought my VW in for a service that an Oil Change franchise told me was absolutely necessary and overdue. However, the guys at Maine Auto inspected my car and said I had plenty of time/mileage left and to replace now would be wasteful. Wow, talk about customer service. My most recent experience involved me having to use an extended warranty package I purchased when I initially bought my car. Needless to say this warranty has been a major headache and all service centers I bring it to push back and tell me not to use it and pay out of pocket. Joe was extremely helpful and took the time to work with my warranty provider which saved me $1k+ out of pocket.Highly recommend these guys.

My poor friend got an inspection done at Maine Auto Service on Forest Ave in Portland and had a horrible experience. They made him get his windshield wiper jets replaced or they wouldn t pass him and as he was driving away the jets still didn t work. He turned around and went back and they told him sorry they worked when it was here and that he would have to come back again and pay to get them fixed *again*. Total crooks!!!Don t go to Maine Auto on Forest Ave!Service: Vehicle Inspection

These so called mechanics are hammer mechanics at best. They quoted me $3500 for a sticker on my car. I took it somewhere else got a sticker for $750 and they told me Maine Auto Service are not known for quality mechanized but they try more retail to make it by. Watch your back at this place cause they'll try to shift you...Service: ExhaustService: Exhaust

I love this place. Tim and Joe are helpful and friendly. They really try to get to the bottom of the problem and communicate well so that you understand what's going on with your car. They have gone above and beyond getting (cheaper) parts or diagnosing my vehicle several times. Would definitely recommend.

Went in to have work done on my brakes ended up with a $1300 quote for the bushings and I will never go back to them again. The bushings did not need to be replaced was given such a high quote only because I was treated as if I had no idea about mechanics of a vehicle.

Dave and his crew are efficient and competent. I had my 97 CRV in here for service on occasion. Like anywhere, it helps if you have a rough idea of the diagnosis before stopping by, but the guys are pretty good about doing it on the fly too. Call first, if possible, or use their online interface to book appointments as they're usually pretty busy.

I feel like i got scammed because not only did they call me half way though the work on my car saying the only way they can proceed was if I spent another 400$ on incidental parts but they also charged me double for all the parts and double for the amount of labor needed but i could get my car back half fixed or pay the price... I feel like i was extorted and i have kids and bills just like everyone else. I dont recomend going there at all.

This is where I go for all my basic services - inspections, tire changes, oil changes. Seem to be honest and not pushy. They'll always suggest new air & cabin filters but you can replace them on your own for much cheaper. I really like going here though. Nice people.

Well apparently if your car dies on the highway several times but the computer doesn't throw a code, there's nothing wrong with it! Hmmm, funny. Pretty sure I almost died twice. Took the money and offered me nothing. No suggestions, nothing. Car died on the highway just after she picked it up. But its fiiiine.Status Update:Owner refunded the money...Two stars

My car failed to start, brought it to Maine Auto Service because they said they could look it it immediately unlike the 4 shops I called before. They didn't diagnose the problem until 4 days later, eventhough I came to the same conclusion within an hour after talking to a friend and doing a little internet research (I know nothing about cars). They told me it was the fuel sender which was incorrect, it was the fuel pump, and gave me an estimate of over $1,000. I called 3 other shops, all gave me estimates that were less than half of Maine Auto Service's quote! I took my car elsewhere and had it fixed within a day for less than $400. Had to pay Maine Auto Service $100 for diagnostics, they were a waist of time and money in my experience.

I have brought my 10 year old yaris in there several times, and they have always done a great job (I don't always get the best news because my car is older but they always fix it up and do an awesome job!) They are always super friendly too, highly recommended.
