The Witherle Memorial Library in Castine is the oldest Public Library in Maine. I love this place. You can feel the history when you first walk in. Just knowing that it is The oldest Library in Maine gives it an elevated status. The stories that these walls contain are definitely worth a visit. As the world springboards into the electronic future and people spend more time staring at devices then they spend with family and friends. Places like the Witherle Library become more and more important. I very confidently gave them 5 Stars, here s a few reasons why:As I said before, the places reeks of history. A stone building, the interior is decorated with old stylish cabinets and display cases, lamps on the table so fancy I feel smarter reading underneath their illuminations. One of the displays was of many fisher-price toys, most of which I had as a kid. A castle, plane, airport, town, etc. Sure brings me back and fits with what a library is supposed to represent: To look at the world with a Childlike sense of wonder. Perfect. On the same table with the lamps, everyday laid out are many of the current newspapers, just waiting to read and enjoyed. All the newest releases and best sellers are readily available as well as Audio books, DVDs, etc.Once a month, they have a book sale, which they have many bargains and treasures that seem to updated quite regularly.Castine is a very unique Coastal Town. It has a very rich and detailed History (there are tours of the forts and points of interest in the Summer) and at the same time, a very modern College. Maine Maritime Academy which maintains a campus as well as a large technology rich ship on the public waterfront in the center of town. Witherle Library is as unique as Castine itself. It should be cherished for continuing to preserve the stories of the past with tools of the future.

Great small-town library, with great staff and wonderful volunteers. This is the oldest library in Maine, and one of the six oldest in New England.
