I don't usually write reviews but had to for this specific cottman's. I was quoted for a great price for a used transmission ($3,500), but beware you're going to end up paying a lot more. The first day I got my car after being fixed it broke down in the middle of the road. Not one or two, but 3 more times my car broke down and had to be towed back! I finally gave up and took it to another shop for it to be fixed and they commented on how badly the work had ben done prior. Please save your money and don't take your car here!

Don't waste your time and money here. My initial experience with this franchise shop was positive, but it's now under new ownership and has gone downhill. I had my transmission rebuilt here in December 2022, and after it stopped working in August 2023, I contacted the shop to request warranty repair. I was told over the phone that the 12-month warranty was void because an independent mechanic had recently serviced one component of the transmission. I informed the shop's owner that this policy was clearly illegal under federal warranty law, and after his continued refusal to honor the warranty, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I waited more than 10 days for the owner to agree to even look at the car and was then told that the supposed problem was a $900 part that my independent mechanic had already ruled out. Don't end up like me: Give your business to a company that won't give you the run-around for warranty coverage and can explain why your thousand-dollar car repair is actually necessary.Service: Transmission

Beware! I paid to have a transmission re-built ($3500) After 1000 miles it wouldn't go into gear. I had it towed to Jim and he cussed me out saying that he had proof that I had abused the vehicle because he saw mud in the wheel wells. He also stated that the vehicle wasn't designed to tow anything even though it had the factory tow package rated to 5000 pounds GVWR. He lied to me and told me he contacted the dealer and that the vehicle could only tow 900 pounds. He took two months to try and fix the problem and charged me another $1500 for a computer that I did not need and after another 1000 miles the car would not go into gear any Again! At this point Jim thought the problem was due to not ordering OEM parts. He ordered the new piston from the dealer 2 more times since I could never drive more than 2000 miles without breaking down. He had the vehicle for 5 months in the first year and when I left he told me that it was no longer under warranty and that I should sell the car to someone else. Anyone selling a vehicle with a known issue without disclosing it can be held liable for all damages. Jim and his son Seth showed complete lack of knowledge and professionalism. The car broke down again and I just sold it to the junk yard because it wasn't worth putting the money into a new transmission.Service: Transmission

I called for a quote, in which I was asked to text my VIN to a number so they could find parts. Never recieved a call back. I heard a lot of bad things but tried to give them a chance with a simple quote.

Took my sons F150 in to have transmission looked at. Jim was fantastic Getting it in right away. He did a very thorough job diagnosing exactly what needed to be fixed. After the repair he asked me to bring it back in 30 days for him to do a follow up check to make sure everything was good. Great service!!

An honest mechanic and he saved me thousands!!! I called for a quote for a transmission rebuild. After describing what my van did at an intersection he had me do a few diagnostic test on the vehicle. He told me I didn t need a transmission just had a broken axle, and he was right. If you want a fair and honest mechanic, he s your man. Thank you!

Jim at Cottman transmission was very professional and honest with me about the work needed done for my truck. He kept me updated throughout the process. They worked quickly and I had my truck back a lot sooner than expected. 100% can recommend the guys at the Shawnee Cottman transmission for transmission repair or other maintenance you might need.Service: Transmission

I paid $3000 for a new transmission, the work took extra time due to another customer bringing their warranty vehicle in and those take first priority. Not a big deal there, totally understandable. However, when my car is done, AS IM DRIVING OFF THE LOT there are immediate issues that did not even occur beforehand, but I was told that the employee drove my car for a quite some time so it should ve been fine. I have TWICE now at this point had different issues than before (one of the issues being all the transmission fluid completely leaking out of my car) . When I attempted to get my car back in under warranty, I was told to call back next week due to employees being out sick. While I understand this, it s pretty infuriating that MY work was put on hold for someone else s warranty, yet mine isn t treated as a priority. All in all, for the ridiculous money I paid I have not gotten the service to match that. Do not recommend.Service: Transmission

Im only giving this place a 2 because I believe the transmission rebuilt was a sucess and nor giving me any problems but besides that. They told me a week and it'll be done took about 3 weeks and i kept calling for updates on my on. I kept getting the run around. Then they quoted me 2300-2400 and i end up paying about 3000. I chose them for what they quoted me. If i could go back in time i would of went somewhere else. Also they dont except debit or credit cards which was a huge hassle for me. I wanted to used my credit card but for some reason they only do money orders. Please dont come here and save yourself a headache

Jim at Cottman was very rude and unprofessional to say the least. I paid over $4000 over the phone before my car was ready. He told me that he "put a lot of money into the car" and he didn't want his checks to bounce. Honestly, it was not my problem, poor business model in my opinion, but I paid him in good faith hoping to get my transmission fixed. I was told by Jim that my car will be ready the next day.So the next day, I arrange a ride and get off work early in order to pick my car up.When I arrive, I was told by Jim that it was not ready and won't be ready until early afternoon the following day. A simple phone call would have been appreciated in that time. Instead I get dropped off at his shop with no way to leave now. Had to Uber home. I come back the next day a little annoyed that I'm there again but he gives me the keys to my car and then hops in his car and drives off.Long story short, I ended up driving off their lot with a broken transmission STILL, and a nail and washer embedded in my tire. Had to drop the car back off the next day. That was June 7th. It's now June 28th and he finally has fixed the transmission... again... So he says at least. He has denied any wrongdoing in this, even to the point of yelling at a customer over the phone regarding the tire. Yikes. Don't even want to waste my time taking this further in terms of legal ramifications, not worth my time or energy.Let this be a warning to everybody.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take your business elsewhere. Unfortunately I have to still deal with him and this company due to my car being under their warranty since he did a poor job at fixing the transmission in the first place!

Very unprofessional. I took my car in , they told me that their quotes were dead on. Quoted me $2,000. Didn't tell me that it was going to be more expensive and got a bill for $3,800. Didn't even fix the problem. It was in and out of the shop. I wrote them a bad review after dealing with them for a year and a half, and then when they found out it was me, they kept my car in the shop for 2 months without fixing the problem, again. On top of it all, I got my car back without my $1,000 subwoofer system. Jim completely ripped me off.

Not Jo (my wife), but Bob: I just picked up my 20 year old Expeditionfrom Jim @ Cottman after a front brake replacement. I found ShawneeCottman after I moved back to Johnson County eleven years ago andspent a couple of years and a lot of money in unreasonable repair costsby several other repair shops, trying to find someone I could trust and rely on for repair maintenance for our two vehicles...which always includedthis old, reliable one that I now only need to pull my travel trailer 3 timesa year. Jim @ Cottman earned, and has competently and professionally retained my my complete confidence in what he does and recommends.I appreciate all your past and future help, Jim.

We came in with a concern about my son's car and he needed it for college, they worked hard and got it finished just in time. They kept me informed of the good and the bad news. Nobody wants to get a slew of transmission parts, but when you need them honest, professional, caring, and competent people like this are who you need. They have been in Shawnee for over 30 years! I will take my next transmission service their way and prevent what happened to my kid's car. Thanks Jim and team.

I have recommended Jim and his crew to my friends and family for years. Today, they showed me again why they are the best. They knocked out a pretty complex job on my Jeep's transmission in a day. They saved me a LOT of money. Jim took the time to sit down with me and explain the problem, as well as what needed to be done. When you go there, you'll notice they are extremely busy. There is a reason for that!

My bride and I were traveling through Kansas with the transmission on my Ford F350 broke down. Luckily we were only a block from Cottman's transmission. The got us right in began repairs immediately. They even made arrangements to tow my trailer into their lot for safekeeping. When my bride and I decided to return to Michigan for the Memorial Day holiday, we discovered that there were no vehicles available for rent. The manager called a friend of his at Enterprise Rentals and got us a vehicle. It turned out we could not rent one because we only had debit cards. The manager put the rental on his personal credit card so we could be on our way. With the repairs took an additional day, they put us up in the hotel at their expense. The repairs were done expertly. We could not have been treated better if we were family.

Don't know why but my fianc's name came up on the review form. Regardless I'm Jim Myers and suffice to say that the Jim at Cottman Transmission in Shawnee is beyond superb when it comes to overall service and especially attitude! He is extremely sensitive to customerrequests and his "team" simply do a superior job. Every year he handles my transmission warranty with absolutely no hassle and is a true example of the expression "the customer is always right"!

Cottman Transmission had to rebuild the transmission in my wife's 2008 Buick Enclave. Jim and his crew were great to work with (if having your transmission rebuilt can be classified as a great experience). He explained everything that needed done, the reason for the failure and even tried to push the repair through warranty (which it unfortunately was a few months past, thanks GM for the help). What was really important was the fact that we got the vehicle back within a short amount of time and my wife was back on the road running the three kids all over the place in no time. Thanks Jim and the boys in the back for all your hard work and dedication to my familys vehicle. I will be sure to pass your name along.

Several years ago Jim saved me over $1,500 on transmission work on my 2005 Yukon. When the transmission went out I had my Yukon towed to a service company I thought I could trust and they said I needed to spend $3,500 on a rebuilt transmission without looking at it. I called Cottman and asked Jim for a second opinion and he told me what he thought this common problem was with my Yukon so I had it towed to Cottman. Jim was right and fixed it for less than $2,000. Jim is now my Trusted Adviser for anything mechanical and I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. I'm originally from a small town and Jim reminds me of the kind of guy you knew and trusted with your car to do the right thing and not take advantage of the situation. You can tell Jim is genuinely concerned with happy and repeat customers and not in it to make easy money from people that don't know better.

It won't let me give zero stars, otherwise I would. Went in for a transmission filter change. No problems, just preventative maintenance. Picked up my car with a transmission warning light on. Had to leave it there for them to look at again. When I brought the keys back the next morning, I mentioned to the technician that it was not on when we brought it in and his response was "Oh, I know". After 7 hours of them having the car, I called for an update. Jim immediately became defensive with me making sure to point out the process of changing the filter, and stating several times that he doesn't know what they could have done to it. He raised his voice to me and would not let me talk. He then called my husband and told him that it was noted on the paperwork that the AT light was on when we brought the car in originally. This is a blatant lie! I asked him why we didn't receive a call from his techs or him if that really was the case, and he told me that he dropped the ball on it. He then told me that he thought we were trying to rip him off by bringing it in for something and blaming him for the other issue. We have a warranty that covers all repairs, just not preventative maintenance so we have no reason to lie about other issues. This place is extremely unprofessional and filthy! Member of BBB my butt! We are now having to pay out of pocket to take it to a dealership and get a rental car! We will be contacting their corporate office and anyone else we can. NEVER GO HERE FOR ANYTHING!

I came to get my transmission fluid flushed and changed in my GMC Truck at eight a.m.. Jim Lamar delivered some eye opening news. There were a couple of really bad leaks that he and Seth showed me on my transmission. As a mobile insurance agent with Aflac, I travel to conduct my business and depend on my truck to get me where ever I need to be and back home safely. It was just a matter of time before I would have been in a bad situation. Jim and his crew ordered all the parts and began working right away. They really out did themselves and completed the entire process within the same day while I waited! The truck sounds and feels like new. I did not intend on that expense but would rather invest in smart than pay for stupid. Go and visit Jim and the crew, you'll be glad you did.

*****If you are considering a civil suit against Cottman (there are many), please contact me. I helped the last person who sued them (2015 small claims court) by offering to speak as a witness against Cottman in court and speak of their practices, I'd be happy to help you for free too*****Brought my elderly mother's 2005 Ford Taurus with 74k miles on it to the Shawnee, Kansas Cottman Transmission in December 2013. We were quoted about $2300 for a transmission rebuild with a one year warranty. Took nearly a month to complete the repairs before we got the car back. As soon as we picked it up, it was obvious it was still in need of repair as it wouldn't shift past 1st gear, meaning it wouldn't go more than about 15 mph. Took it back, this time it took about 6 weeks to repair the car before we got it back. Picked up the car, again something was wrong, took it back, waited 6-8 weeks until it was ready. REPEAT again and again and again. This guy has excuses coming out his butt and is incapable of giving someone a truthful answer or even a semi-plausible straight answer. Sure enough, it wasn't until December of 2014, literally a year after we first brought it to Cottman Transmission in Shawnee, Kansas that we got it back and actually drove the car for a couple weeks. It was the first time we had the car back for more than a week since first taking it there. Guess what happened? In January of 2015, the transmission went out again. I called Cottman Transmission and the owner told me that I was out of warranty, even though the car was never actually repaired. He blamed his staff, claiming the technician who worked on my car was on drugs and he had to fire him. He would also call up while the car was back in his shop claiming it needed another part, not covered by warranty and expensive of course. I got suspicious when he did this the third time and had the car towed to a shop nearby who told me the only thing wrong with the car was the transmission, not the extra parts that Cottman claimed was wrong. I called him out on this and he got defensive, blaming his technician for the deceit. We immediately sold the car, taking a significant loss due to letting the new owners know it had a bad transmission. Cottman screwed over an elderly woman and a disabled veteran. Look online at Cottman's civil court cases online, as they have been sued multiple times in small claims court over shoddy work and ripoff repair jobs like the $$$ they stole from me. You will fare better if you take your car to a three year old, at least he will try to fix your car.
