Do not take your car here, the owner does not know what customer service is. Blowing cigarette smoke in your face, will continue to argue with you after you have repeatedly said no to his extra services he wants to do just for an extra buck. This is an only cash and check business, I brought cash and the owner Tim doesn t know if he has cash back to give me. Simply ridiculous and embarrassing to run a business like this, do better.

READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE TAKING YOUR VEHICLE HERE. THIS IS ALL 100% TRUE: It took MONTHS for them to complete repairs. The repairs to my transmission failed in a few weeks. It took them 6 weeks to complete the repairs on my vehicle for the second time. Then, the repairs failed after 20 hours. After 3 weeks of waiting for further repairs, I gave up and retrieved my vehicle to trade it in and buy a new one. At one point, I was unable to reach anyone by phone for days on end. The owner REFUSED to give me a timeline, and even YELLED AND CUSSED at me at one point for asking. My vehicle sat in his lot untouched for OVER A MONTH. I called another time and no one seemed to know that my vehicle was even there to be repaired. THEY BROKE MY RUNNING BOARD AND DENIED IT. These guys just honestly don t care. They are unprofessional, rude, and probably the worst mechanics in Lawrence in terms of performance and customer service. In all, I think Tim (the owner) gave me 10-15 excuses for why he couldn t complete any repairs in a reasonable timeline. This place is a joke, go anywhere else.

My friend's alternator died and Tim and his workers went above and beyond to help us, staying open more than 3 hours past closing to fix it. Everyone was very nice and helpful and as two college age girls we felt like we could rest easy know that our car would be fixed. 11/10 would recommend.

Tim has been a life long family friend. He has always been in the elite ranks of professional race cars drivers & car designers/builders. With that knowledge, whatever he repairs or rebuilds, just gets that extra touch of being upgraded and improved that makes it shift better, run stronger, or last longer... things that an average mechanic will never accomplish.

New to town and found A-1 after calling a few other shops. Tim was very honest and professional, and ready to level with me about my cars problem. Cost of the diagnosis goes towards repairs if you get the work done at the shop. Price wasn't the cheapest, but it wasn't the most expensive either. Overall this was a superb experience!

In 2011, I bought a new Subaru from the local dealer. It was using oil so fast I kept a gallon in the car at all times. I went to the dealership to complain and they said it was within normal limits. I found out from Tim at A-1 that Subaru had published a warning that many 2011 Outbacks were using too much oil and would need new motors . He accompanied me to the dealership to explain the oil consumption history! They stated it needed to be driven a particular number of miles (I believe it was about 1,800 miles but cannot remember exactly), then checked to determine the oil consumption. This procedure needed to be repeated 3 times before it could qualify for a new motor . The two times I took it in, it was low, but they stated it was not low enough. I explained that I had to add oil during this time or it would have had none at all. That did not seem to matter to them and in fact they would not even check it for a third time! Finally, it threw a rod and I was stuck on I-70 for 2 hours before I could get it towed. They finally conceded to replace the motor which took about a week. The day I got my car back, the electrical system kept going out as I ran errands. I drove right back to the dealership that day. It was obvious they considered me an annoyance. I was told it was due to a bad battery. Because of the trouble I had with the dealership, I went back to A-1 for a new battery. It was installed within a half hour. The next day, again on I-70, the electronics went out completely! I had no brake lights to alert other drivers, and only momentum to get across 2 lanes to the shoulder. I was very scared I would be hit at 75 mph as, with no brake lights, I had no way to alert other drivers I had a problem. I had gotten on at the east Lawrence access and this happened within 3 miles! It was not the battery at all but a poorly connected main circuit the dealership had not even given a cursory glance. I guess a glib battery problem was easier for them. At that point, I no longer trusted or wished to work with the repair people at the dealership even though I had purchased their top warrenty when I purchased the vehicle. My daughter's family was expanding so I decided, since the car had a new motor, to send it to her on the east coast. Tim kindly went over it in detail to make sure it would be completely safe for my daughter and grandchildren. He also arranged for the transporter to pick it up at his shop for its trip the east coast. I felt he went above and beyond to making sure the car was now safe to drive, dealing with the transporter, as well as helping me communicate with the dealership, although they showed little respect for another professional. My daughter has had no more problems and I no longer have to deal with lackadaisical employees at that dealership. I recommend Tim as an experienced and outstanding mechanic with excellent cistomer service. It's hard to beat a hometown owner operated shop! He also recommended I buy a Chevy Equinox which has been trouble free. As far as I'm concerned he is the best machanic in Lawrence and I highly recommend his customer service and professionalism.

I have always had a good experience at A-1. Thanks!!! Tim has been fantastic and our go-to when we lived in Lawrence. We moved two states away not long ago and will miss his great work!

Beware of those positive reviews. I was mislead by the high score 23/30 when I recently drove to A-1 for oil change. I was disappointed at the first look of the space: no lobby, no waiting are, no entrance to the office, which you typically see in others. I did not leave as I should have just because I was busy and wanted to have it done that day as they told me to wait for 30-45 minutes. This was a wrong decision. I waited for more than one hour before they pulled my car in and drained all the oil. Then they needed to order a oil filter, which took another 20 minutes. They just changed my oil, replaced the filter and filled in liquid, nothing more, like checking around and tire pressure, etc. which others typically do. I still suspect if they really replaced my filter since I did not see the new one they ordered. They charged me $38.74 including tax. I paid cash since they would charge 3% more if using credit card. This was really the worst experience of oil change I ever had. I am still worrying about the service quality, may need to have the oil change redone soon.

i will never take another vehicle to this shop. twice work was done on a car i took there without my say so. i was quoted some ridiculous cost for something i didn't want done in the first place. after the first time i installed a call recorder on my phone for insurance. the second time he tried it, i wasn't having it. After being called a liar among other things by tim over the phone, i showed up unannounced and before i could get the words out he folded like origami. if google would allow it, there wouldn't be a single star. A-none.

I'm new to using this shop, but have had nothing but positive experiences here. Tim is an honest guy and has even talked me through some repairs that I could do on my own instead of paying him to do them for me.

On more than one occasion Tim has gone above and beyond with my vehicle. Whether it be brake problems, electrical issues, or anything in between, he's made time or stayed late to make sure I'm up and running. This is the only shop I'll take my vehicle to.

I don't understand how this moron "Tim" can even stay in business between his crappy transmission work that will fail before you even make it home, not to mention Tim doesn't even know how to use an obd scanner let alone diagnose a vehicle. Ps he also likes to pay for parts and hired help with bad checks! Stay away from this guy.

When nobody else could help Tim fixed us up and had us back on the road in under 24 hours. Hopefully we never break down in Lawrence again but if we do I know where we will go. Thanks Tim.

Great service. Tim got in touch with me each day to let me know the progress. The job was done when he said it would be and was done at a very fair price.

Hello everyone I would like to take a minute and review A1 automotive ,I took my vehicle to A1 automotive because I was having serious transmission issues my vehicle could not exceed 25 miles an hour I was experiencing hard-core transmission resistance ,after calling around to all of the local transmission shops in town A1 automotive quoted me the best price of $1400 for a full rebuild on the transmission in my 1986 GMC Vandora short bus I was super excited at that awesome price, ....later I would come to find out The old clich saying "you get what you paid for "is true in this case .I dropped my short buss off and talked with the owner , seemed like a very nice gentleman it's a small shop and at the time they are working on other vehicles ahead of my vehicle which is OK I payed $1400 in cash for the service ahead of time because normally that's just how I roll , and then I waited for my vehicle to be completed & hoping that when I get it back the transmission will run like new so I wait and I wait and I wait some more after the first week of waiting I would drive by their shop every other Day to check on the progress of my vehicle I was surprised to notice that about a week and a half went by and my vehicle was still parked on the side of their shop subject to the elements i& any possible thieves that might come by will by in the middle of the night finally they started to work on the transmission they worked on it for about four days and then I got the call that my vehicle was complete so I go pick up the vehicle and as soon as I drive it away from the shop the same transmission problem that presented itself in the first place was still existent so I waited a couple days and drove around a little bit in the problem was still present ,Oh hail no !! I cannot believe this at this point my vehicle would not go past 25 miles an hour ,so I call the shop back and they tell me bring it back to them and they will look at the problem again so I take it back to them in this time they parked the vehicle on the side of the shop and let it sit there for about three weeks and then finally they worked on it and they called me and said it was complete a go pick up my vehicle from them again and I'm thinking to myself OK this was a 2 month-long process gonna cost me $1400 I hope the problem is fixed , lo and behold I get my vehicle drive it away from their lot and the same original problem is existed had it been fixed ,again my vehicle will not travel past 25 miles an hour it's stuck in low gear at this point I'm thinking this cannot be right this shop must not even test drove the vehicle after they supposedly fixed the transmission so at this point I decided I'm NOT going to take my vehicle back there anymore I just chalked that $1400 up as a lost and I called ATSI transmission specialist on 23rd St. A guy named Wayne answer the phone he was very helpful told me to bring my situation down and I explained to him that A1 automotive just botched my transmission job I took my vehicle to ATSI and I think they pitied my situation a little bit because they only charge me about $100 less then the full $2200 , after few days they did a full transmission rebuild called me up , I went and picked up my my vehicle and the transmission has been excellent every sense good job ATSI !! Now back to you A1 automotive the owner is very nice and he's been in business here in town for a long time that's what he told me I like small shopsmom-and-pop type of businesses , so I'm not saying that he runs a bad shop or anything I'm just letting you know my experience with this business to take your vehicle there at your own risk ,thank you for reading my review.
