Iowa has a literal Danish windmill. It was brought over from Denmark and rebuilt and preserved. After paying for the tour, you watch a short video on the history of the windmill and how it came to be. Then you can explore the windmill and climb up. The kids loved climbing the ladders and going as high as we could. They loved the Lego model of the windmill also. Very large gift shop when you re done. Neat items from Denmark and other countries. Our family enjoyed our time.

Cute place to visit. Some nice things in the gift shop. Was a little disappointed after walking around the gift shop for 10 min and not 1 person around. Windmill wasn't working, wanted to ask why. Was about to walk out and leave a 5 dollar bill at the register for a sticker I wanted and that was when someone came out. Not mean, but not friendly either. I would have walked around outside but there was someone cutting the grass and blowing all kinds of dust and dirt around, had no intention of breathing all that in.Maybe it was just wrong time, wrong day to visit. They really should put some bells or something on the door so they know someone was walking around. A dishonest person could have walked out with anything.

Beautiful historic windmill, wonderfully preserved and obviously well loved by those who own it. The lady in the gift shop was delightful and a joy to talk to, she was knowledgeable and very kind to our kids. We took our 2 boys here to visit as a homeschool field trip. $8 for a family of 4 is something that is unheard of these days! We watched a short video, got a brief tour of the ground floor by the employee, then toured the rest of the windmill and outside grounds on our own. We spent a wonderful hour roaming around the mill, the yard, and the other buildings on display. The viking house was my sons favorite.

There is a short informative introductory video. We got a personalized tour from the windmill manager, who is very knowledgeable about the history and the inner workings of the windmill. The windmill was in excellent condition and they are working hard to keep it in working order. You can climb up inside the windmill. There are ladder steps with sturdy handrails. They have a nice gift shop with a wide range of items. Gift shop staff are lovely. There are some nice outdoor displays and picnic tables as well. There are a few other shops, eateries and attractions in town as well. Don t miss Elkhorn!

This roadside attraction is a diamond in the rough. There were so many signs along the highway for it so we figured to stop. We did the tour which was only $3.00/person which includes a video history of the windmill and we got to go inside. There are a few other attractions as well. The tour was pretty quick so we didn't spend too much time which makes it doable for people passing through the area. I also filled out the survey and got a free postcard.

The Danish Windmill was very interesting and a must stop along I-80 going towards Omaha. The windmill is an Iowa Information stop as well, you can tour the windmill floors for $3 but i have trouble walking so didn't take the tour. They have a big gift shop there as well as a Viking cottage to show you what life was like back then. Elk Horn, Iowa, put it on your must see list when traveling towards Omaha!!

I have not visited this facility, but have ordered products on line from their store. The website catalog offers a variety of goods to choose from. In my orders I purchased fruit jellies and pickles. The store personnel called me prior to packing the order to make sure I was able to place the order successfully and offered any changes that I might want to make. Shipments arrived quickly for me in Missouri. The prices are fair and the service is excellent. The jellies I order are perfection in every way, these jellies are a Scandinavian brand. I recommend this store and I will order again.

The lady inside was so kind and so nice. Very friendly and we talked a bit about my travels and sites I wanted to see. I signed their guest book and filled out a survey they have (simple traveler questions) and received a free postcard in return. It was cold and very windy so I didn't walk around outside but I did take a couple quick pictures. The inside has souvenirs, books, clothes, candy and the like. They even sell hard cider in different flavors. You can even take a tour of the windmill. Unfortunately I didn't take the tour. I just enjoyed the conversation and environment of good people and a good place....Hygge.

A quaint surprise. Community of 650 in Danish farming settlement. Brought the last authorized exported Danish windmill to US in 1975. Short video shares history and the windmill tour costs $3/adult (or w/a AAA card you get 2 for one ). A very nice gift shop next door has lots of great gifts from Denmark and even some Danish pastries.) About 6 miles from Highwy but worth a little detour.

Really nice place to visit with a tour of the windmill. Gift shop have many neat things to purchase for gifts. Danish, German, and Baltic items and sweets for sale. This place also doubles as an iowa welcome center with tons of maps and pamphlets for things to do in Iowa. Gas station half a block away and also and electric car charge port on site.

We took our grandsons to see the windmill and are really glad we did. There was a short movie of how it came to be in Iowa after originally being in Denmark. After the movie, we got to go inside the windmill. It was interesting and educational. The boys enjoyed it, and we all liked the gift shop that was full of traditional Danish items. It was definitely worth going to.

I ordered Anne Beate Design Nativity set and Nativity pieces from the gift shop website for Christmas presents. All the pieces arrived just a few days after ordering online. All the pieces were in excellent condition. I am so very happy with the quality and the speed in which they were shipped. I even got a personal call from Julie from sales to confirm my order before shipping! Thank you all at Danish Windmill for making my Christmas presents so special. Merry Christmas to all!!!!

I placed an order for the hard to find bleskiver Mix from the online museum shop. So happy to have found it and at a reasonable price. I was having it shipped to my son in another city and after the fact, discovered that I had placed a typo in the shipping address. I called the next day and got Julie who knew who I was and what I had done. She had already made the change. She was a joy to talk to, so friendly and upbeat! She also sent me a paper receipt along with information about the museum as well as several Danish/ American organizations that I never knew existed. Being of Danish heritage, I plan to investigate them and now I want to visit the museum! Thank you Julie!!

Very interesting place. Stopped just to use the restroom which were very clean and discovered this. We watched a 15 minute video about the windmill and got a tour of the inside. It was really great and super cheap!! Have told others about this place. It also has plenty of parking and a gift shop. It was a nice place to stop and get out and walk around

May not have stopped had we known that the windmill was in disrepair. It appears to have been that way for a couple of months at least. Museum is very small. Gift store prices were much too high. There were a couple of other displays to see. Enjoyed the woodworker's shop next door... some refinished items and some new crafts for very good prices. Very pleased with the handmade birdhouse I picked up there.

Think there's nothing to see while driving on I80 West in Iowa? Think again.Harvey Sornson, an area farmer of Danish descent, came back from a trip to Denmark in the spring of 1975 and raised money in Elk Horn, Iowa (pop. 540) to buy a 1848 Danish Windmill and deconstruct it in Denmark and rebuild it piece by piece in Elk Horn Iowa !!( And the town also built a Dutch museum with a wild flower path )

We stopped here in the morning, after we broke down our campsite, in order to check out the museum and grab breakfast. Unfortunately, we stopped on Sunday morning and they weren't open yet. We weren't able to check out the museum but were able to walk around the grounds. This is a really neat place to visit if one is interested in history and culture. It provides historical information on Danish cultures and the Vikings of old. We walked around the structures and read all the signs. Fun place to stop... we will definitely be coming back next time we drive through here in order to check out the museum.
