In comparison to the other available, nearby options, Pilkington is Heaven-on-earth. The dress code is outdated, and they could use an improvement in order to keep their workers cooler. Think Knauf.I began my stint at Pilkington as a temporary employee. After 90 days, I was approached by a member of upper management and asked if I'd be interested in becoming a furnace specialist. WIth no desire to be in the "cooler" parts of the plant packing, as I already was, I respectfully declined. However, his stance remained unchanged, and he insisted. After seeing the money that came with the promotion, I was set on retiring from the automotive industry.Management wasn't awful. Nor was Human Resources. I never had an awful experience with either. There were team members in management who did not particularly care for me, but being in the union, one would have to TRY to get fired. The union is a joke. The presidential opportunities to warrant change were all passed by, and if you're not in a clique of the union, your best bet would be to become a union rep yourself. The more advanced a steward you become, the more you can politic your way to more days off, extended leaves due to union business, and maybe a spot on the board if you're voted cool enough. After a few years of running various furnace lines and learning more about the trade, I was promoted into management. Shortly after my promotion, my mentor parted ways from the company, and I was a fish in a pool of sharks. Since most of my ways and traits were unconventional, authority figures always felt as though I was challenging. After joining management, it wasn't long before I received a PIP performance review. The day shift managers were all under the impression that I was an incompetent supervisor or had a personal vendetta. Either way, I was under review, and according to my direct supervisor, I was improving in every area of my lackluster performance. Within 90 days, I should have been free from the breaths breathing down my neck, but instead, after one mishap during a run (these things change often, and no one really knows what's happening day-to-day).But the latter part is production. It comes with the territory. Giving someone a review, watching them turn the entire course of their performance around, and to thank them by walking them due to personal, illogical, or inexistent reasoning remains an awful employee experience. However, HR was recently revamped, and they brought in a manager who had around 5 companies closing under his reign. Most of the talk at Pilkington was geared around "how could this place survive?" With the environment already being less than appealing, the rest of the culture tried its best to match. The break rooms were decent, and they recently renovated to hold a marketplace, which is a nice cafeteria alternative that most employees requested. The hardest part of the job was dealing with those working conditions. But the money, opportunity to advance, and mentorships were all great experiences for me! I know most don't receive the same chances I was given. But talking to and getting to know people while explaining what an ideal career path looks like to me has never been foreign. Unfortunately, the individuals who wanted me in a more responsible role didn't stick around, and his former coworkers had their eyes set on other individuals. This also came directly before a MASSIVE labor reduction throughout the plant. There was a slew of supervisors released in quick succession.

Slavery in modern times. Too much management, waste of monies and bad decisions. Could be so much better if they cared about us and our long 12.25 hr. Shifts.IMHO

Horrible place to work. Terrible management. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. They treat their employees like dirt.
