The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and down to earth. Can't can't afford all the repairs at one time? They'll give you a report of their inspection and prioritize which repairs or replacements need to occur, based on your budget. They'll be frank about repairs that may not have to be done immediately, and recommend when indeed your vehicle should return.I started out as a customer of the Gages Lake shop, at the time residing down the street from The Gages Lake road garage. As I have since moved further north, I now visit their Lake Villa shop; once again, thankfully being a short walk away.That said, even if I were 50 mi away I would still prefer to bring my vehicles here... They're trustworthy, competent, and practical. Heck, at both shops there have been occasions when they found less expensive ways to fix an issue and subsequently charged me LESS than their original quote... Passing on the savings to me.

Gages Lake Repair is a godsend! Mechanics I can 100% trust to do quality work, fair prices and work with me on repair options. I have never felt taken advantage of working with this crew! Always friendly and courteous. Gages Lake Automotive took in my vehicle on short notice after my air conditioning died unexpectedly. Could not be happier they were able to accommodate me as it was in the mid 90's outside and miserable out. They thoroughly checked over my system and discovered it was in need of charging. I was given a courtesy vehicle to drive while mine was being fixed. I had my car back the same day, and everything went smoothly. Highly recommend Gages Lake Automotive, Lake Villa, or Gages Lake. Both locations always treat you well, are fair, and timely.Service: Air conditioning

I have been going to Gages Lake Auto - Lake Villa location, for several years now. They are the most straight forward, customer-focused, honest shop I've ever been to. Ken makes sure to explain issues and will let you know if it's something that can wait, or if you need to do it right away. They are the best, and I'll continue going there for years to come!

I cannot tell you how amazing this place is. They also get you an appointment as quickly as possible, never take advantage, and even remember you! Such amazing service, they get you in and out. Also, Ken is so nice and explains everything perfectly. I will never not take my car here, and when I had to take my car to the dealer Ken gave me the best recommendation. I recommend this shop whenever I can!

Thank you to Ken and Gages Lake Auto. Brought my vehicle in to get my wheel bearing fixed. They did a good job of finding other issues with my vehicle. Mind you those issue that were found I knew about awhile back but I sort of put it off. Had them fixed it for a fair price. But the thing was they went above and beyond to check on the vehicle with being told too. The first impression to me is always the best impression. Thank you guys.Update: "My family have been going to this shop for years now. Ken, CJ and the team is amazing. They would not try to up sell you on anything you do not need like other mechanic shops. Brought my vehicle in and they found and fixed the issue with a reasonable price. Even went above and beyond and replaced my ceased caliper as a courtesy. How many shop would do that for you? This shop is the best. I drive from out of town to take my car here because I know that they are honest and do great work. I feel like they are my doctors for my vehicles! They can always quickly pinpoint the issue with the vehicle and every time I get my vehicle back it drives like dream. Skip and team always go above and beyond. I highly recommend them if you are looking for an honest and fair priced repair shop.

Two separate shops told me my Kia Soul needed a particular repair (which it didn't). I took it to Gages because they're our register mechanic and we needed a loaner car, and they diagnosed the problem correctly, which saved me from dumping a ton of money into the wrong "solution" and then having to pay to get the actual problem fixed. Very fair price, quality work, nice guys.

I took my f250 here after another auto repair business did sub standard work. Repairs were greater than estimated but held to original quote. Truck drives better than ever now. I won't go anywhere else in the future!!

Got my car in quickly, diagnosed issue and had it repaired ASAP. Prices fair, will definately use Gages Lake Auto repair again. Was looking for a local repair shop was hesitant to change but glad I gave them a try.

Newer to the area and received a mail flyer for this shop. I needed a tire rotation and oil change. So I decided to use this shop. I looked online and saw I could make an appointment online. Sure thing, they called me back soon to confirm my request. I brought my car over, and was told it would take an hour. No problem. I knew there were some minor things which could have been worked on, but I didn't suggest or ask about them since they do a free test drive/inspection too. Well they found the issues I knew were there, and I asked about other items to see if they would "up-sell" me. THEY DIDNT! Well since they were honest, I had them do the minor work. At this point I knew it would be a longer wait, and they offered me a free loaner. FREE LOANER. And it was a nice brand new car, not a junker. When I picked up my car, I was happy with the price, even though some of the work I could have done myself, I was pressed for time and didn't mind paying the shop. I asked other service questions/advice as I checked out, and I'll go back in a minute. They treated me like I was a neighbor or friend, versus a shmuck they just want to up-sell every little service.Highly recommended.

Ken always gives you the no-nonsense diagnosis, and they're all there to help you with the repairs large or small - they don't go looking for more expensive things just to drive up the profits. The estimates are reasonable, and they tell you what you need done, why, and why it's important. Hassle-free service.

This place is great. Very friendly and knowledge staff. Prices are fair. Waiting area was clean. Shop was clean. Staff was so nice to talk with while my car was being serviced. I will be going back again. If you live in the area there is a mailer once and a while for discounted service. Give them a call, wonderful staff.

I went to Gages Lake Auto in Lake Villa for the first time on 10/26/15. I found Jim to be a friendly and informed fellow. He new about my car, which is a 2oo1 Honda civic. His mechanic also knew the car well. I asked them to go over the car and let me know what may be done to make sure it was ok for winter, you see I brought the car up here from Arizona. They found 4 things that needed to be fixed and told me that I could wait on some of the items. So I had 3 of the 4 items fixed and plan to g back in a couple of weeks to get the last item fixed. I am als planning on taking my wives car there for tires and now that it is out of warranty for service. The price was good and the service was great. Thanks JIm.

Always willing to answer any questions you have!!! Always honest with what you need done and different options of fixing something if you have a certain budget!!!
