Had a weekend here. The location was ideal for Chicago tourism and seeing the river and lake and getting to all the amazing places in Chicago.Matthew at the front desk went above and beyond to accommodate our requests and make sure our stay in the hotel was the best it could be. Great price, service, and room. 10/10 would recommend.Nearby activities: River, oak street beach, millennial park, cultural center, gay bar, straight bars, great restaurants, redline to get everywhere else.

Good: the location is amazing and the price can t be beat. It was really easy to navigate the city from this location and it was walkable to everywhere we needed to go. The bars inside look fun if you like to stay up late and drink, and the lobby is quite beautiful.Bad: this place has none of the charisma of other hostels I ve been to. Everything smelled like pot, there were zero perks, and a cup of black coffee was $4. The nicest room they have, the premium king, was dingy, small, and stained.Halfway through our stay, our toilet broke and needed to be repaired. We had to move rooms late at night and were downgraded to a queen. They also went into our room while we were gone and lied when they said they tried to contact us. When we asked about compensation, the night manager offered us two free drinks, which was a joke. We couldn t control the temperature in the room we moved to, which staff blamed on the old building even though it worked fine in our previous room. The main manager was kind enough to offer a partial refund the next day, but it was truly the bare minimum and the kindness and hospitality that hostels are known for was severely lacking. Neither the staff nor the other guests looked like they wanted to be there. We ll shell out more for a hotel next time.

Booked a last minute trip, and needed a cheap stay in the city. Booked in the female only bunk room, bathroom was clean. Room was fine, nothing extra, but it was nice that there were individual lockers in the room for any personal items to be stored in the room. The lounge and bar area were nice. Elevators do take a minute, and parking wasn't far. Would stay again.

decent for a quick stay.needed a last-minute spot to stay for the night, so i got a queen room at the freehand. the room itself was private, had a bathroom, and was well-kept. the vibe of freehand, however, given it s a hostel, is more rowdy than i expected; i came across a lot of younger international travelers in the elevator and solo-trippers. it s connected to a bar, so the lobby/first floor area was more crowded and loud at night. i wouldn t recommend for someone who wants to have a calm housing arrangement, but if you re traveling alone, this could be a good way to meet new folks.would recommend for a quick stay or for social solo travelers.Safety: it s across from a casino, which i didn t appreciate. the area seemed quite busy and attracted a lot of gamblers/folks going out drinking. there are other parts of chicago that feel safer.Food & drinks: lots of food options

Stayed at the Freehand February 2024 (premium queen room) and enjoyed my stay very much. The rooms are small but clean and comfortably furnished. Fun and friendly staff and Lydia at the front desk was awesome, and super helpful! The early and late checkout options are great also!** At the time of my stay, there was no guest kitchen available as pictured in some of the older reviews.

Freehand Chicago was my home for a few nights during a conference in Downtown Chicago. It was one of the affordable options I could see on a 3rd party website so I decided to go for it.If you are unfamiliar with the concept, some of the rooms here function as hotels (shared form spaces) and above are private rooms with its own bathroom. This was a definite must for me so I made sure my private queen room was crystal clear confirmed. The hotel itself is a vibe. It's warmly lit public areas and hallways create a chill atmosphere. I stayed on the tenth floor which meant battling for the two elevators, which I'd say were decent in terms of speed and response.I was given a corner room which was smaller than other queen rooms. The bed was comfortable and the shower had great water pressure and temperature. Not a lot of space to do much else inside the room but it was decent. It wasn't the cleanest (and some of our towels had some marks left behind), but affordable nonetheless.Walls are thin as we definitely heard our neighbor's arguments on some of the nights. I suppose it's good for the drama but can be annoying when trying to get sleep.Wifi is complimentary and is an open network, meaning it's a bit slower than other hotels that are private.I probably wouldn't stay here again unless it was the absolute most affordable option in town, but by no means did I have a bad stay either.

I usually don t do hostels and I try to avoid them as much as I can due to privacy reasons, but my dad booked this hostel for me and honestly I am not complaining. This hostel is clean and well designed, and also it is located in the middle of down town, so it s basically just a place for you to sleep when you know you ll be out and about. This hostel is only good for a single person, if you re bringing a family with you, book a private hostel or a regular hotel room. This place will be my go to spot when I come down back in Chicago!

Do not stay here. Our experience with the Freehand Chicago was highly disappointing, and we cannot recommend this hostel to anyone. Our room was dusty and there was mold in the bathroom. After the check-out, we were surprised to find that the hostel had deducted an "urban bed fee" from our $50 security deposit, which we had anticipated receiving back in full. This fee had not been communicated to us prior to our stay or during the deposit payment process. We contacted the customer service to inquire about the unexpected fee. The person who answered the phone was very rude and unprofessional. Despite our request, they declined to provide us with any written information about the fee, which we find unbelievable.

I was supposed to be able to stay at Freehand Chicago from 3/6/24-3/20/24 because I had a reservation. I checked in & the desk clerk overcharged me $50 & $82.28 = $132.28. I read that there was only a refundable $20 key deposit. I paid extra for no reason & really liked the room & hotel otherwise. There seemed to be non-paying customers there(6 or more in my room alone). I was trying to take a nap & do work in my room on 3/9/24. A darker complexioned woman & a man showed up & told me to leave at around 12:30PM. I had never met these people before. I was forced to leave for no reason by strangers who may have been imposter staff who felt like causing a stranger a problem. I have lost my stay & money from 3/8/24-3/20/24. I originally paid upfront $476 for 14 nights. $476 14(total booked nights) = $34(nightly rate). $34(nightly rate) x 12(nights I wasn't allowed to stay) = $408. $408 + $50(initially overcharged) + $82.28(initially overcharged) = $540.28(total I would like refunded as soon as possible, please). I had to seek a safe place to stay in a hospital because of this. I would much rather have been in a hotel because I paid to be there. I have called & emailed many times. People at your hotel yell at me & refuse to help still. I would like this resolved with a refund of $540.28 finally. These random people put me on the street. I would like my $540.28 back because your hostel was very nice for most part otherwise. Can you please check if these people really work at your desk? Why would anyone ever kick me out for no reason? There were 2 housekeepers that were scary & rude. I wasn't given a towel. The lockers were very small & my luggage wouldn't fit. You seem to not have any kitchen area, which would be nice. It seemed like desk staff was getting guests into all kinds of trouble, so you know. They get people on drugs & that's illegal. It was also hard to sleep because my chest & organs hurt from drug smoke. I called your desk & asked them to enforce the "no drugs allowed" policy. Desk clerk yelled at me & harassed me. I put up with drug smoke then & this could have ruined my life & the building. I believe that alcoholic beverages really are poisonous because they're made of rubbing alcohol. That was a neat bar area & it'd be safer & more fun without alcohol & drugs. I wish your staff would not brainwash guests to believing drugs & alcohol are fun & exciting. I think people end up dead then after they accidentally don't know what they're doing. Your staff is a pathetic, terrible example for travelers who otherwise wouldn't do drugs. They are trying to fit in with your idiot, nincompoop staff. I deeply resent that your staff influences others the wrong way. You should be a better example because everyone would be safer & happier. You won't get repeat customers anyway because you are ruining lives. You should be investigated & ashamed of yourselves for not doing better for your guests!!!I liked the building decor very much, especially the tiled bathroom. I wish hallways were not such dark, frightening colors. The designs were really neat otherwise.I am not sure how you get repeat business by kicking out paying customers & ruining guests lives with drugs etc. You really should be aware that this could've been way better & I would like to have had my full stay. Will you please give me my $540.28 back & keep better track of your staff? They ruined my life & your hotel was terrifying because of them. It really could be so nice & relaxing maybe if you would please choose to run it better.

They must have people do reviews for them because if you actually look at the bad reviews something just doesn t add up. This place was gross. Maybe they have clean rooms but I didn t see them. Seriously this room was DIRTY. The carpet was awful and the cushions on the furniture were gross. I bet the women s rooms are better and they probably put the cleaning costs into the private rooms but seriously I'm talking health risk. Bar was cool I guess. Still smelled weird. Be skeptical of the 10 reviews you never see this many 2s alongside 10s.

This hotel is in a great location and I ve stayed here many times on frequent visits to the city over the past 1.5 yrs. I even include the hotel bar on my list of recommendations for friends visiting the city to stop in for a cocktail (I previously lived in Chicago for 10+ years and would regularly bring visiting colleagues to the bar). I had a booking this week and called (Sunday night 3/10) to see if the 3rd party booking system had canceled the reservation since I could still see it in my app and I needed to rebook for another trip. The person who answered the phone was rude and repeatedly asked for a confirmation number as I was trying to find it, was noticeably inpatient when I didn t have it up within a few seconds, wouldn t answer any question I had in trying to find the right information for the number and instead repeated shortly the request for a confirmation number multiple times, asked to put me on hold while I found it (which I did within 5-10 seconds) and after coming back on the line as I was starting to give the confirmation number right away, switched me to the answering service. When I called back immediately, I gave my confirmation number upon request to which they confirmed I did not have an active room booking for this week, and before I had a chance to finish my request about a different reservation, they hung up as I was speaking without saying anything else to me beyond me not having a booking. This prompted me to decide to write a review as I recalled my last couple stays at this hotel. I last stayed here in January and noticed the overall cleanliness of the hotel in the main hallways, lobby (with strong smell in the first floor), has diminished. The rooms have been pretty clean (not great attention to detail but the sheets were clean), but this last time I noticed the room was so dimmly lit without the ability to adjust to a brighter, slightly normal lighting level - so much so that I needed to put on the bathroom light and side table lamp to add lighting where I could. Furthermore, I was in the basement alone to fill up my water bottle in the gym (after being directed there from the front desk) and felt unsafe with someone who came down the stairs after me. I didn t get the impression they were a guest of the hotel or that any security was on staff. After reading others reviews and my own recent experience, it seems things have changed over the years and the service/upkeep of the hotel is not the same. I was going to give this place another shot, but after my experience with my reservation tonight and my experience staying in January, I won t be recommending any friends to visit and I won t be rebooking the reservation I called about tonight.

The location was amazing. Very central and near a lot of Chicago highlights. I stayed here only one night in order to catch a flight out of O'Hare. The prices were higher than advertised, the room was very very small with no trash can. The bed was comfy and clean but overall this hostel was not great! I did pre check in as the email I got requested, but when I arrived it took at least 5 minutes for them to find my reservation. I get it, but the staff was fairly cold about it. The bar and common spaces look nice!

Despite its charming ambiance, our stay at this hotel was marred by a distressing incident. In the early hours, we awoke to find our room flooded with unsanitary toilet water, reaching a depth of two inches. Shockingly, the flood extended down four floors, causing significant damage to our belongings. Our clothes and even shoes were saturated and ruined. Our laptops almost completely soaked. Despite requesting assistance to change rooms and clean our belongings, we encountered delays and were left to deal with the situation on our own. Furthermore, we were unexpectedly charged for cleaning our contaminated clothes. The unsanitary conditions left us feeling deeply unsettled and unsure of how to proceed. This experience falls far below acceptable standards of hygiene and hospitality.

The only thing good about this hotel was the location. Very easy to get on the L or catch a bus from. The room was gross, mold in the shower, mold and dust on the ac unit, even the ceiling was cracking. The carpet looked like it hadn t had a cleaning in years. Wish I had thought to take photos. Also bad service, our bed got accidentally soaked by a bottle of water so we asked for all new linens. We had to call the front desk 3 times because housekeeping kept bringing us the wrong things, then breaking their promise to come back (even though we repeatedly told them exactly what we needed). Finally we had to go in person and watch as the front desk person used her walkie to talk to housekeeping. If you need somewhere cheap and don t care about cleanliness then I guess this place works? If you want somewhere decent this isn t it.

This is a top hostel in Chicago Downtown. I would stay over and over in here. It is a perfect choice for people who is outside most of the day. However, there are not only shared bedrooms but also private. The service is great. Regarding the rooms, specially the shared ones, they are clean. The hostel has gym, cafeteria and a bar. I would like to emphasize that the bar is a top choice if you want to end they day hanging around with friend and a nice drink.Pd. The convenience is great too. Just a block away from the closest subway station (red line), two block away from shake Shack and so much more.Rooms: Super clean and comfortable. The plus is that there is light regulator and you can rest.Walkability: Just a block away from the closest subway station, near shake Shack and so much more.Food & drinks: Gotta try the drinks in the bar.

I just spent the 4 greatest nights in Chicago. I had the Queen room with a private bathroom. It was small and tidy, very clean, the bed was super comfy to sleep in after a long day visiting Chicago. Upon my arrival on Christmas day, I was greeted by the most welcoming receptionist who instantly made me feel like I made a good choice by staying here. Thank you Freehand & happy New Year!

Saturday(2/17) afternoon staff! Upon arrival, we checked in and received a notice that all access to the building (coming and going) would be locked due to construction. This information was not sent out as a courtesy prior to the stay.It was a total of 7 traveling with me and we had 4 rooms, 3 of which were booked on the same reservation. One guest was forced to be on a floor alone in this haunted mansion remake. The people hanging out here are obviously involved in risky business. I was asked multiple times a the men on the elevator if I was going to the 16th floor where all the fun was. I heard a woman complain to the desk agent that she didn t have the energy for another happy ending so she wanted to request an all female room. I guess upon check-in to the multi guest rooms, you don t know who s sleeping there with you until you get there. The heaters are old school, remote operated units that hang above the doorway. With temperatures below 30 degrees and such an antique system, you d think someone would turn the heat on. When I reported no heat in all four rooms, we were distributed mini heaters the size of a small desk fan. We tried to make the best of the situation only to make more discoveries. The white bedding is dusty, dirty pillowcases, heavily dusty and soiled bathroom floors, non-working electrical sockets besides in the bathroom and non-working lamps. This place is a freak show, might as well be a brothel. I stood on towels to shower. One guest room did not have complete bedding, just sheets.Multiple reports were taken to the front desk and the staff was very rude and nonchalant. No true interest in accommodating traveling customers. I would definitely rate this property a 00 on cleanliness. 000 on customer service and the culture is definitely one of the underworld. Please don t stay here with your children. It doesn t matter how good of a price is offered. It is NOT worth it!This was one of the worst places I have stayed in my life.Rooms: No heat. We were going portable desk top heatsSafety: Weird.

Do not stay here if you value your security and well being. A man who was obviously intoxicated or high stalked my wife, and waited outside her door for well over an hour, and the hotel didn't care at all. Front desk was dismissive to my wife, and was rude to her after she told them she felt unsafe. There is no security at this hotel, and if you feel endangered, you are on your own. It took weeks before we were able to get a refund for the horrible stay she had. Do not let the cute facade fool you, there are major issues with this hotel.

1. We booked the hotel through Agoda and the hotel charged extra $70 dollars as urban fee for 6 nights.2. When we checked in, the toilet seat was broken, and the shampoo and body wash were empty. We notified the staff, but nobody came to fix it.3. Someone vomited on the hallway and the staff did not clean it up immediately. It was very smelly.4.The only good thing is that the hotel is conveniently located.

Cannot express enough how disappointed I am with my experience at the Freehand Chicago. Booked a queen room for early valentines day. The room was obnoxiously dirty. The ceiling lamp had dust older than me covering its entire surface, dust and spider webs on windows, inside of cabinets, you name it. The cherry on top was the shower. It s not only dirty but dangerous if you re allergic to mold. In fact there wasn t a single spot WITHOUT mold on it. Chose it for the experience and boy did I have one. Wouldn t recommend it to anyone.

We stayed here for the first time in 2021. We liked it so much that we made sure to book this property again this past weekend, almost 3 years later.Unfortunately the property has gone way downhill. There was no one at the front desk to check in when we arrived, he was outside. He was very friendly though and got us checked in fast.We got our 3 rooms, 2x private quads and 1x private queen. All the rooms were filthy. I'm not a germaphobe but good lord I lifted the mattresses (all of them) to check for bed bugs. No bugs BUT enough hair to make a wig. It was everywhere. Stains everywhere, the seating, the bedding, the curtains that close off the cabin style beds, the underside of the mattresses. Yuck. I found an old balled up sock under one of them. The AC is "not turned on yet for the season" so the rooms were around 80 degrees when we got there and you can't turn it on.There is only handsoap at the sink but literally nothing in the showers so you need to bring your own soap and shampoo? I get this in the hostel style rooms but in the private rooms too?Anyway, we loved the place the first time. The concept was cool but they are not keeping it clean and up to date. Also, not that it matters, but everyone ooutside the front doors was clearly baked.....you could smell it like BBQ on a back porch.I have photos but I won't share them, I don't want to malign the place Ijust want it to maintain a basic standard.

OK. My first stay before was a great experience with my own room. The location is amazing. After my leg surgery, I decided to stay an extra day and explore Chicago. This time, I stayed in the shared rooms for the value. At seven or so, a lady came in the room, which is fine as its shared room, so no surprise. She started out friendly, but after a while, something was off. She started talking about being in a gang, using and stealing government money, and what type of car she wanted to buy. She was on the phone but having a fake conversation for 5 hrs straight and smoking in the room with the shower running all night. I was too exhausted to complain.Well, at 1 am She finally went to sleep. I was relieved and figured waking up at 7 a.m., I would wake up before her and leave. Nope, she woke up at 5 am. and continued this fake conversation about a car, smoking, and coughing so loud and disgusting. She opened the window to get the smell of smoke out of room when I was sleeping. I woke up sick and had to leave ASAP...The point is that the staff needs to be vetting customers better, and I suggest they put a huge charge if someone is smoking and notices of it with keys, on the door, and make it known to guests that a huge fine will be placed if caught smoking.Be aggressive with complaints, and if something is off, get on the staff. Seems a lot of transients use this hotel, unfortunately. The value and location attract some shady people...Nearby activities: It couldn't have been better. I did so much in a day of walking to all the tourist locations. I hit up all the locations of batman movie, so I really the loved location.. Walking distance to all of them

As a fan of the Freehand brand, I wouldn t stay at this location again. The room was filthy and exactly as described by other negative posts. That wasn t a breaker for me considering the price. My issue was a mentally ill and questionably homeless customer in my shared room. This may sound like hyperbole, but the first night this person talked in their sleep almost the entire night while often yelling obscenities. I thought it may have been tourettes, and just used my earplugs. My other concern was that they coughed and hacked enough I wondered if they were coming down with something. I didn t interact with this person the next day to confirm because I was gone sun up to sun down and kind of forgot about it. The second night was a little better, but in general mostly more of the same. The following day the other people in the room checked out and I noticed that all the trash on the ground, water on the bathroom floor, liquid hand soap squirted on the wall/sink/shower was from this person. When they awoke, they were staring at me through the space between the bed curtain and curtain rod. I asked if they were ok, which started a bit of a paranoid conversation on both our parts. This person started telling me they were illegally injected along with other conspiracy sounding stories. Again I asked if they felt like they were coming down with anything or what I could do to help only to increase their suspicion. I went to the front desk and asked about changing rooms. The employee was punchy and asked in this order, Why would you wait until my cleaning staff is going home? , What do you want me to do? , What is the problem with your room? . He only let me get as far as telling him I think the other guest in my room is potentially physically and mentally ill, he cut me off to say there was nothing he could do. When I tried to find out if only this other customer and I were in the room the next night, the employee said he couldn t share any information or help. My last night was awkward, but ultimately fine. The last piece to add a little extra disservice was my friend who visited from the local suburbs to share a drink at the in-house bar was charged more than the printed price. I will definitely try another hostel before staying here again.

As a disabled person I am here to warn other disabled folks not to stay here.We couldn t get any help from any of the employees. Not with the door, or a place to sit while they ironed out the problem with securing our room. The same room that we pre checked into to expedite the process of checking in. As the email they sent asking for us to check in early stated. We couldn t get any help getting our bags to the room. I asked for a luggage cart and was given a flat dolly. They couldn't even make change when I asked. What I did get was chatting amongst employees and listening to other patrons complain about how dirty their accommodations were.As for the ADA room that we were given there is only about 2 square yards of room that is wheelchair accessible. The bathroom is spacious enough for moving around. So I guess folks in wheelchairs just hang out in the bathroom. The bed is dangerously low. Not an option for a safe transfer. Barely an option for anyone that isn t a child.I can usually look past certain things if there is good customer service that tries their best. There isn t any trying at customer service here. What one finds here are employees who watch a disabled person struggling through the door with luggage and do nothing to help. Then they act put out when they have to fix their own error.

Good downtown location close to public transit. We booked a private four bed so we wouldn't be sharing with strangers. The room had two bunk beds, storage lockers to fit a small bag or backpack. Bring your own lock. Appreciated the luggage storage service after we checked out but before we needed to leave.Appeared to be very popular with the international crowd.

If the whole lower level didn t smell like sewer I think I would have liked to hang out in the bar. It looked cool. Couldn t stand the smell though. Luckily upper levels didn t smell. Or the 14th floor didn t, I guess. Overall the hotel was pretty quiet. Wouldn t say the views are nice. My window looked out at a brick wall but there was a sculpture out there which made it more interesting. This place also seems to serve as a hostel if that is something that would be of interest to someone reading.Rooms: Room was tiny and the bathroom was huge. The bathroom made up for the lack of space in the sleeping area. The shower was nice. There were not any luggage stands or tables to put anything. The bathroom was the same. There was a long thin board that angled down towards the floor. Very hard to keep anything on it as it was to narrow and stuff just rolled off of it.Walkability: Right next to the miracle mile and several bars and restaurants within walking distance. And public transportation. There is a parking garage to park in nearby. It s about $60 for 12 hrs.

What a wonderful gem!The 1927 hotel went thru some major transformations of the years, from mafia hangout to seedy long-term resident stay and now into reimagined hotel/hostel hybrid. When we first walked in, it was obvious we weren't in some bland overpriced downtown Chicago hotel. The funky, eclectic vibe meshes lovely with the beautiful bones of a nearly century old building. At the reception desk we were warmly greeted by a woman ( I apologize for forgetting her name) and Matthew. They were having some playful banter behind the desk and as we walked up we felt like we were included in on the fun. After checking in, up we went to the 14th floor for our premium king suite. No, the rooms aren't as spacious as newer hotels, but the well thought out layout and design, along with old school charm blows away any antiseptic chain hotel any day.Resting in bed before our evening out, I heard some water running, in which I assumed it was a fellow guest showering. It's an older downtown hotel, I didn't expect complete silence. Unfortunately I walked into the bathroom only to find, that the water I was hearing was from upstairs leaking into our shower.I snapped a quick video and went down to reception to let them know. Matthew and Tyler were chatting as I walked in. As I showed them the video, the two of them immediately snapped into action. Tyler went up to the room above ours and Matthew started to switch our rooms so they could address the problem. When I got back to our room, Tyler was there and was communicating via radio to another person in the room above discussing the work needing to be done.I don't have any begrudges over the maintenance issue in an older hotel, life happens. To make up for the room switch, Matthew kindly comped us drink tickets for the bar. Both rooms were clean and the beds very comfortable and I loved the tiled bathrooms. All in all, it is a lovely hotel for a great price in the heart of downtown Chicago.

I was here just for a day.Following are the pros1. Location: its a perfect spot for solo traveller or bachelor. Right next to grand station just within the downtown2. Cleanliness: Rooms/restrooms/blanket/ pillow covers- everything was neat and tidy3. Gym: they have a small gym in basement4. Common area- Good enough common area to chill5. Storage facility : they do allow you to store your luggage in their storage room before checkin as well as after checkout. And yes it was pretty safe.Things you may not find good enough are1. You need to carry you own lock for the locker within your room. (You may rent it from them, I don't know how it works)2. The rooms are really really small. But good enough to crash at night. And don't forget, they are really affordable too.3. They don't have any common kitchen. The checkin time is 3pm to 12am Checkout time is 12 o noonFeedback- The lady at the reception could be LITTLE more polite.
