Rental cars in Hawaii are expensive. So we rented a car from Aloha in Maui for 2 weeks. The car was a beaten cosmetically but it was 100% mechanically sound. We saved a ton of money, compared to the mainstream car rental agencies. The staff are wonderful:I lost a pair of prescription Ray Ban Sunglasses, and searched the car several times before returning it. But we received a call from Aloha after returning home. They found them. It was air shipped to the mainland for around $16.

We rented a car for almost a week from Aloha Rent a Car and were very pleased with the car itself as well as the customer service. We landed at the Maui Airport and once we called them and then got our bags, there was someone there to pick us up and bring us to the office for paperwork and to pick up the car. The customer service representative was friendly and clear in her instructions, such as how and where to return the car, and she could not have been more helpful in answering our general questions about Maui. The Toyota Corolla we received may not have been brand new, but it was very nice, clean and ran/handled well. The price to rent was reasonable and the best we found in researching car rental prices on Maui. We prefer to buy local whenever we can and glad we chose Aloha Rent a Car. We wouldn t hesitate to use the company again.

Great price, decent 2016 Subaru Forester with racks was perfect for adventures around the island. Threw the boards on top, gear in the back and go. Friendly and helpful staff. We'll definitely rent from Aloha again.

We knew would be getting an older car (2015) and the price was right. What we did not expect was to receive a car that was barely road worthy. It smelled like it had water damage, transmission was giving odd sounds and lurches, car alarm would go off intermittently for no reason and the fob did not work. Most importantly was it had 3 new tires and one extremely bald tire, which of course we did not notice until the tire light came on. We added more air hoping it would hold but when we returned to the car after the swap meet it was on its rim. Insult to injury was that there was a part missing from the tire jack.Customer service on Saturday was dismal to say the least. No offers of sympathy or we will have this fixed in ? amount of time.We would not rent another car from them after this experience.Lesson learned you definitely get what you pay for here.Theresa Forbes

WORST CAR RENTAL EXPERIENCE IN 30 YEARS. They gave me a car that didn't have a working FOB. They started the car. I drive away to grocery store, park, then car doesn't UNLOCK. They force me to drive back to them to have the FOB battery replaced. THE MANAGER TOLD ME, "OH YOUR THE COMPLAINER." "YOU HAVE A LACK OF ALOHA." Seriously, bad service and they attack their customers. They also gave me a car with 3/4 tank. How do you fill a tank to 3/4 at a gas station !!! Later, following their instructions to return car at airport lot, you can't leave the car at the airport, without it being unlocked and leaving the keys in the car. They didn't return any of my numerous calls at the airport. KIHEI CAR RENTAL, same price but way better service

Great bang for your buck! They have a range of options to fit your budget. If you do choose an older, cheaper option, just don't expect a pearl, you get what you pay for folks, be realistic. They do also have newer models that are a fantastic price for the quality. We chose a +/-2015 model initially to save some money, but we learned that it had a mechanical issue. We brought it to their attention and they gladly swapped it out for another car. And they didn't have another option in our category so they upgraded us to a newer model without any extra charge. If you want a corporate experience, then just stick with the big named companies and you know what to expect, and expect to pay more.If you treat people with aloha then they will treat you with aloha. Be kind and have patience.

Reading the other reviews, one thing becomes obvious quickly: people unreasonably expect inexpensive, older rental cars to be flawless, and they're not willing to take ownership for issues of their own creation. We rented a "2014-2015" Subaru Forester, not just to keep our costs down for a two-week stay, but as I knew that the vehicle would suit our needs perfectly, and being older meant that it wouldn't be a scratch and dent-free source of constant worry or an obvious target for parking lot break-ins.Although I'm a mechanic, I hadn't known to take into consideration that Maui's roads are much tougher on a vehicle than the roads at home. Aloha 2014 Forester #1 was rough around the edges (as expected) but totally functional. Unfortunately, it had a substantial wheel bearing noise that I wasn't about to humor for two weeks of our vacation. We quickly returned, and with no hassle were given 2014 Forester #2. Just minutes later, while checking the air pressures at nearby Costco (as a precaution - mechanic, right?), I discovered that it had a damaged tire. Oh well, back to Aloha/Maui...My wife and I decided on the way back that upgrading to a newer vehicle was the way to go for the amount of driving we knew we d be doing. Aloha not only quickly accommodated that, putting us in a nearly-new 2021 Forester without fuss, they refused our repeated offers to pay the difference for the upgrade. In hindsight, the newer vehicle is really what we should have gone for in the first place. Live and learn.Everyone we dealt with at Aloha, from phoning about our reservation details, to the shuttle driver and the on-site office staff, were professional and friendly. I'd still say this even if we'd ended up in another battle-scarred 2014 Forester, or paid the difference for the 2021 we got instead. Airport pick-up was within 10 minutes of our call to say we were ready. Being able to drop the car at the airport for our late evening flight was super convenient and effectively gave us an extra half-day of time in Maui. 5 out of 5 for these folks, really.Realistically, if you want a like-new rental car for a fair price, Aloha can provide it. If you choose to go with an older car, they can provide that, too. Just be prepared for the trade-offs for your savings; it'll have dents and scratches, it'll have obvious wear inside and out, and if it's an "SUV" like our first two Foresters, it'll have beefy roof racks with big red pads for carrying surf and paddle boards. You'll trade low key looks for usefulness. My sole criticism here is that Aloha clearly needs to have their mechanics test drive returned rentals to ensure that stuff that may not be a safety issue, but is a sanity issue, gets caught and repaired before it makes it back out to renters.(For what it's worth, friends on this same trip rented a newer Jeep Wrangler from a name-brand company at the airport, and I could hear the worn-out front suspension parts clanging over bumps from inside our car as they drove behind us. Clearly this island is hard on vehicles, and renting from a big company is no assurance that the rental will be in tip-top mechanical shape.)

The first year we used this company we were so impressed so we used it again for our December 2023 vacation. We received a call letting us know our car would be parked in section D. When we arrived there was no car with the plate # provided in section D. We landed at 11 pm and ended up having to wander around the entire parking lot to try to find a car with the plate # provided.Found our car in section A and a slightly different plate # than provided in the voice-mail and call received. We got in the car and there were multiple lights on on the dash - low tire pressure and oil light. The car seat provided did not tighten at all and was incredibly stained with specks of food on it.Took the car the next morning to be replaced - they apologized and gave us a new car of same kind, however this is the last thing you want to do your first morning of vacation.Had previously recommended this company but will not again!

Well-run budget car operation with friendly staff and competitive rates. The cars are mechanically sound but may have cosmetic issues which gives a certain peace of mind about the not uncommon scrapes and dings that are endemic to crowded condo parking lots on Maui. Also less likely to be targeted for a break-in when left at some of the beaches .

The cars are a little older, but this place has a great price and great customer service .We landed after their operating hours, so they dropped the car off at the airport parking lot for us. There was a small issue with the first car the next day, they exchanged it for us no questions asked.

Appalling After-Hours Service ExperienceI find it imperative to express my profound dissatisfaction with the abysmal service provided by Aloha Maui Vans during our after-hours pickup reservation on Dec 20 at 10:30 pm.Despite a call received two days prior, to charge my credit card ahead of time, we were left stranded at the airport with a one-year-old child, having never received the promised text message with crucial information about car location and access code. Our repeated attempts to contact both the regular and after-hours numbers went unanswered, leading to an agonizing one-hour wait and a series of fruitless voicemails. This egregious lack of responsiveness not only left us inconvenienced but forced us to resort to alternative transportation at our own expense. Adding insult to injury, the company had the audacity to impose a $25 surcharge for after-hours pickup a service that was not only unfulfilled but also exacerbated by the company's blatant disregard for customer communication.I insist on a prompt and comprehensive resolution, including a refund of the aforementioned surcharge and a reimbursement for our incurred expenses. It is disheartening to witness such a flagrant disregard for customer service standards, and I trust that your immediate attention to this matter will rectify the undue distress caused by this ordeal.EDIT: Aloha rent-a-car came through, so I'm updating this review to 3 stars. They refunded $25 surcharge for late pickup and our Lyft ride that we had to take due to the aforementioned inability to pick up the car after-hours.

I can t help but rave about this company!!!!We just left Maui on Monday. Their customer service was exceptionally spectacular!!!!We almost cancelled them because we found we found their competitors price to be lower. They called me back the same day and offered to price match and also threw in complimentary leis for our 25th Anniversary. They definitely have earn these five stars by living up to what they promise. No lines. No shuttles. No hassle. No time wasted. Before we landed they greeted us with a text with steps on what to expect. We are greeted at baggage claim by their rep with leis in his hands. He takes pics of us and helps take our luggage to our car. Once we got to the car the process was easy peasy(literally took under a min). Inside the car we find more goodies. A cooler bag perfectly put together for a nice drive or the beach. Snorkel gears in the trunk for two and plumeria flowers making the car smell amazing. The return process was just as simple. We get a text and they advised us of what to do. We park the car. Leave keys inside and send the pics of where we parked and we were on off to catch our flight. We definitely would recommend this company over any others and will be using them every time We are back in Maui. They make car rental stressors a thing of the past.

The absolute worst place you can rent . Have used before but the new ownership is terrible. First car they rolled out for us was wrecked , had bald tires . Second car was front end was completely worn out and unsafe . Manager was rudest unprofessional acting jerk ever . Finally got a decent car on third attempt after being treated very rudely for just wanting a safe car . Would have gone elsewhere but it was late in the day but I strongly suggest you don t go there at all . They could care less if you get stranded or even worse . I ll pay double to never use this place again . Buyer beware ! These cars are unsafe . After seeing the reply from the general manager , I would like to add that I don t have the wrong place . It s Aloha Rentals on Maui . The cars were unsafe because the tires were bald , had significant front end damage and were very loose in the front end . We finally got one that was marginal at best , since it was so late , I took it . But the biggest insult was the manager who treated return customers like dirt because we refused the first two pieces of junk they rolled out . I can t believe aren t being sued but if you keep rolling out those kind of cars , it s only a matter of time .

Don't rent from here! I went online to reserve a car but never received an email confirmation. So I called the office to see if they could find my reservation and they confirmed they DID NOT have it. They suggested I go online and try again or they could book it for me on the phone. Instead I went with another company after reading the terrible reviews.Turns out they did have my reservation and I'm being charged a $30 cancellation fee for a car rental they said they never had. And instead of being helpful, the assistant manager was just completely RUDE. I've never experienced so much hostility from a mistake someone else made! She could've just acknowledged they made a mistake and waived the fee instead she doubled down and was RUDE just for $30?? No way $30 is more important than their reputation. Terrible customer service and I didn't even rent a car from them.Heed the bad reviews and rent from somewhere else.

I normally do not leave reviews, but I felt it was warranted to leave a review of this company. We chose them because they were a local company (small business), which we try support versus larger, nationwide chains, especially due to the recent situation in Lahaina. We did select an economy vehicle, however we did not expect it to be 12 years old. We rented and returned 3 vehicles within 3 days due to safety and comfort issues (first one sounded like the backend was dragging and little to no AC. Second and third one had little to no AC as well). The owner/manager was very rude upon return of the third vehicle and asked us to take a test drive with him to prove the AC was not working. This was our vacation, and all these trips were infringing on that time. He finally gave us a new vehicle to drive that was perfect. It should not have taken us four tries to get a vehicle that was satisfactory, especially considering there were literally 18,000 rental vehicles sitting next to the airport waiting to be shipped back to the mainland (this was told to us by a local).

Non-responsive. We tried to reach them in two different ways. They don't provide enough information even in confirmation emails. Between our experience and reading recent reviews, I think we dodged a bullet. Prices looked good at first but ultimately not worth it.EDIT: you can see from their response that there are integrity and accountability issues as well. Definitely suggest you heed this review and others if you want a good rental car experience.

I am traveling from Colorado USA to Maui Hawaii and when I got there, I needed a car and this car rental place was the closest for my family and when we got there, we got a red 2015 Dodge caravan license plate ssd-642 van that was dirty and full of scratches. Only a quarter of the gas was there, even though they said half was full. we had to go back in because they were going to charge us was half a tank even though it was only a quarter. The fob on the car was also broken and had to deal with it because no one was answering the phones or returning our calls. When we had some other concerns and had some questions so we called them but there was no response so we kept calling them and after a few calls are number got blocked. we had to use a different phone to contact them and they said they were handling the situation and was going to contact us back. Seven days later still no response. I would not recommend them to any families who are here in Maui to have a fun experience. Also, the manager there is very unorganized and hard to talk with.

Terrible experience. First car they gave had such extreme axel and suspension issues we were terrified to drive it. Brought it back and they gave us an older car that was also in bad shape. It knocked every time it went around a corner and smelled like cigarettes. After getting home I noticed on credit card statement that they had charged me $300 three separate times. When I called to ask they said the charge 3 times was a mistake but that they charged us a one time cleaning fee of $300 because there was sand in the car. I mean seriously?! You re better off to go with a standard car company at the airport

We just returned from Maui where we rented a middle age 10 passenger van from Aloha Rent A Car. As an older vehicle the van had a few bumps and bruises as can be expected. Who cares? As a group of 6 adults and 4 children did it fit our needs? ABSOLUTELY! The van fit all our needs and ran flawlessly. The driver who picked us up at the airport was super friendly and the staff at the office was helpful and fast. Our plane, when leaving, was delayed half a day and the staff was most helpful in making sure that we were able to keep the van for the extra time. We had already paid a small fee for late drop-off and they did not charge us anything extra for the much later drop-off. Would definitely rent from Aloha again. Great experience!

This was one of the BEST decisions we made on our recent trip to Maui (April 2022). We rented one of their new 2021 Subaru Forester, it had about 1800 miles on it, in excellent condition, and about 50% less than all the quotes I was getting from Avis, Budget, Enterprise etc. Their customer service was outstanding! Picked us up outside baggage claim, took us about 5 min drive to their office, spent less than 5 min signing paperwork and we were off & rolling! They even included two beach chairs & a cooler as part of the rental. Great people, great experience! BTW the lines at the typical rental car companies at the Maui airport can be crazy long yet another reason we ll only use Aloha Rental Car for any future trips!

Great deal on the rate. Extremely friendly, the Ford Escape we rented was in good shape with everything in working order. They requested we take a walk around video of the car so everyone would be on the same page when we came back as far as any damages go, which was extremely refreshing compared to other places I ve dealt with where it was a fight after the fact.I would highly recommend renting a car from this establishment.

We had the best experience with Aloha Maui Vans. I can't recommend these guys enough - skip corporate rental companies and support locals at Aloha Maui Vans!We had no problems at all. Easy shuttle ride from the airport, quick pick-up, and everyone was super friendly. As tourists, we also had a hiccup and they were very accommodating and understanding. You simply cannot get this kind of service from corporate rental agencies, and especially cannot beat the price. This will be our go to rental car spot whenever we come back - no questions.

This rental place has some good things but the bad exceeds the good by far.I called them from the airport and although I did not have a reservation, the person who answered the phone said she does have a car available and sent the shuttle to pick us up at the airport. The shuttle driver was very nice, kind and polite, gave us some good recommendations for the island.Once we got the car, a Toyota Corolla that was maybe 3 or 4 years old, the car was literally filthy and gross, with stained seats, leftover paper that appeared to have been used to wrap meat left in the console, I don't even think a minimal cleaning was done before the car was given to us.Would not expect an older car to be pristine, but a rental car should have a minimal of cleanliness. We drove away but the car was just too dirty, so we turned around immediately and returned to Aloha. I asked the same front desk woman if it would be possible to get a clean car.At this point she turned mean, and told me that she found me a car without a reservation, at a good price (all true), and I shouldn't make such a fuss about the car being dirty!!!I pointed out that I have the option of leaving a review of my experience, and that's where this woman started yelling at me, using foul language, showed me the sign above the front desk saying "We have the right to refuse service" and told me she will refund my money, she won't give me a car anymore and to get the H out of her F-ing store. This front desk woman also told me that she does not care about the review that I might write, because her aunt works for Yelp and she can have the review removed.Overall the bad exceeds the good, not worth doing business with this rental place, very disappointing and low class.

I rented a Subaru Forester (?2014) from Aloha Rent A Car for a week starting 9/13. I chose an older model forgetting how hard it is on a car to live on an island. I decided that I wanted a different car and when I went back they first offered me one in the same class, but I said I wanted to pay the difference to be in a newer car. They gave me a brand new 4 door car (either a Hundi or Toyota) and did NOT charge me. Also, there was ZERO waiting at the airport for pickup and the shuttle to get us to the airport left as soon as we dropped off our car. I would rent again from them, but now I know to at most book a car that's 2 years old or less since the island living is kind to the humans, but not so easy on the cars. Thank you again Aloha Rent A Car.

We got a rental car here for a great price! It was not new and a little dinged up (which the rental agency fully disclosed in advance), but had AC and power locks and windows and got us around the small island really well! We were grateful it wasn t too fancy (it can be windy in Maui and door dings aren t uncommon). Also grateful that the agency surprised us by reducing the price when we arrived they said that was to reflect a drop in market value, since demand was less than when we originally booked. We got great shuttle service pickup at the airport (10 minutes or less waiting) and appreciated being able to drop the car off in the airport parking lot before our early morning flight (for a very small cost). Thanks Aloha Rental Car for your great service!

Worst place to rent a car! Unauthorized charges after dropping off vehicle in same condition as we picked it up. When we called them to ask why our card was charged again without authorization they stated because we didn't refuel, when explaining we were told to return the car with the same fuel level as we picked up the lady changed it to state we were "undercharged" when picking up the car. Well...which is it? Our contract states otherwise! We have our contract that has the total for our week stay and that's what we paid. They refused to refund the money that they charged to our account without our consent and we had to contact our bank and have the charges disputed. After investigation the bank refunded our money. Super rude and DISHONEST people. Dirty cars with roaches! Also the tags on the vehicle were expired...We did not even realize it until we dropped off the vehicle. Unbelievable! Beware! DO NOT RECOMMEND!! There are car companies worth spending your hard earned money on and renting from and this is definitely not one!

AC was not working, tires kept deflecting, no windshield washing product... Overall the car was in really bad condition. And they charged us $300 extra for having some "sand in the car" when we returned it ( without our consent!"). Shuttle pick up at airport was also a mess, we waited for almost 30 min, and when the shuttle showed up, it had 8 seats for over 20 people. Never again.

I have to say I'm very disappointed at Aloha Rent A Car. This was my first time traveling to Hawaii and my partner and I really wanted to support local business and decide to give Aloha a try.A few months prior to our vacation, we booked for three day car rental but paid for four days, since they have a four day minimum policy. The reservation went through and confirmed. On the first day of rental, we called for airport shuttle service and were picked up in about 20 mins, which wasn't too bad.Later the nightmare began. We arrived at the car rental office and realized we needed the car 1-2 hours more than our original reservation, so I asked if this is possible, since I paid for four days anyway. The general manager (I believe) was very inflexible about this and stressed that someone else needed the car so we have to return on time. Despite inflexibility, we thought it was fine to stick to the original plan and signed the rental contract. After signing, we were told to wait outside as the car had some mechanical issues and needed a fix. I was unhappy about this since it was a waste of our vacation time, and because of me showing my feeling I was threatened and "educated" by the staff that if I showed my "attitude again they will go ahead and cancel my reservation.I felt very frustrated and was so done with this terrible customer service. I immediately looked up and booked with Budget for a convertible with similar price. I wish this business could do something and treat their customers with respect, otherwise I would suggest to avoid renting from them at all cost.

Unfortunately, a really bad experience. We were able to reserve the car no problems, but upon arrival were not allowed to rent without proof of comp / collision, information we keep in our cars back on the mainland. Conveniently they offered a solution, just purchase their insurance for 30$ a day. Hustle. Same thing was happening to a the couple next to us Manager was extremely rude, poor front desk staff had NO way to help anyone.Sadly this is not a local business I would ever recommend.
