If you're looking for an HONEST, reliable, and TRUSTWORTHY transmission guru then look no further! After taking my vehicle to another shop in Athens, I was told that I needed a brand new transmission due to metal shavings being in the transmission oil (I'd just purchased a 2014 GMC Terrain and it was, at times, shifting hard and seemingly slipping. At other times, it would shift out beautifully with no issues). I informed Mr. James of what it was doing and he told me to bring it to him to diagnose because it may not in fact be the transmission. Turns out, it was NOT. After he diagnosed it and drove it for a bit, he informed me that I needed to have my wheel sensors replaced and my ABS system serviced. He highlighted what I exactly needed to get done on the diagnostic paperwork he provided. Took it to Classic City Motorworks in Athens. They ordered new speed sensors, put the new ones on, and now my car is driving smoother than before, with even more take off power, and is consistently shifting out smooth. James Transmissions saved me from what would have been a $6k-$8k job! While I do have to finish getting the ABS system serviced, the wheel speed sensors being replaced has me back on the road and not regretting purchasing this car. Never once did I question what he told me was going on with my car. He made it clear if there was nothing wrong with my transmission that he was not going to have me pay money for something my car didn't need. Will definitely recommend any and everyone that has transmission issues to his shop. I wish I could give 10 stars!Services: Transmission, Auto engine diagnostic

Was told the whole transmission needed to be rebuilt for an estimate of $5500. Got a second opinion and was told the transmission was fine, the torque converter was fine, and that it was only a history code that needed to be cleared. Hard to find a honest mechanic. Be sure to get a second opinion before taking this one s opinion.

2 days in show for diagnosis, $150 and couldn't even tell exactly what the problem was . Their answer and fix was $6000 to rebuild the transmission LOL what they'll rebuilt is $200 torque converter and $200 pump.let me tell you 3k miles used transmission for $600 and an honest mechanic that laughs at places like this one for $1000 labor and my car is like brand new. He even wanted to charge me same.labor for rebuilt if buy parts so could of done it for even cheaper don't waste ur money and time

You want find a better person who sticks to his words than James. He s so kind and understanding with unbelievable knowledge when you talk with him about your issues. He was recommended to me by someone at another auto garage in Watkinsville Georgia. Unfortunately, due to some failure with new parts we had trouble in the beginning but in the end James made everything good. I will never use anyone else in the future but James transmission. Thanks James, this old man truly appreciates everything you ve done. You probably lost money on my job but I will try to recommend everyone I can in the future and also use you on my other vehicles in the future.Service: Transmission

Charged my Dad $125 for unapproved diagnostics that produced the results of an OBDII scan."We never apply "hidden cost" to our work. When we provide you a quote on a transmission rebuild, we give you a set price range ahead of time. We promise you won't ever have to worry about any surprises."Service: Transmission

Was told my transmission needed to be rebuild or I needed a new one all together. After coming to James I was told that I didn t need to do either and all I needed was a cv axel. As someone who doesn t know about cars I would have paid to have just about anything done without a second thought. So I m really thankful for the honesty and care they put into there work :)Service: Transmission

I was recommended by friend. James was very nice and performed a detailed check and test drive of my car. He didn't charge me. It was so nice to a student who has just moved into this city. I will definitely come to him later when my car need repair in the future.

Hands down best experience I ve had with a transmission build and diagnostic for both a high performance Diesel and stock Diesel trucks. Definitely the best of the best, James and Hudson both are very educated and extremely talented with diagnosis and customer support. 10/10 recommended to anyone.

I took my 2005 Mountaineer to James Transmission to get a 5R55S rebuilt. I read up on the symptoms beforehand (hesitation and slamming into reverse along with some wonky shifting). I figured that my issue might be caused by a bad valve body and/or a common problem where the steel servo rod wears grooves into the aluminum servo bores. Some people conduct a repair by sleeving the bores and James discussed the pros and cons of that method vs repair with re-manufactured and upgraded parts. He was friendly and knowledgeable. I went with a rebuild and the price was reasonable. He also included a student discount on the final price and a 24k warranty with the rebuild. The rebuild was ~2015. I have since driven the vehicle to California for a move and then to Ohio for another move. It has been ~90k miles since the rebuild and it still shifts well. I have ~230k on the vehicle so I am hoping the transmission outlives the 3 timing chains/guides on the notorious Ford 4.0 SOHC V6.

I had been told by another mechanic that I needed a new transmission. I thought to get a second opinion and asked a friend for a recommendation and he sent me to James Transmissions. James looked at, drove it, put it on a lift, and found a leaking cooler line. He replaced it and my car has been running great ever since! I will definitely return to James Transmissions. Great experience!

Rebuilt my transmission in my 2016 ram 2500. I was turned away by other shops who just replace transmissions instead of build. James upgraded mine and now I can have confidence pulling my trailer again. Great price and great work.

July 2017: I took it in for a new clutch and they did serious and costly damage to my front suspension. They broke one of the torsion bars and would not take responsibility for it. This was after my vehicle had to go back several times for other problems with the original clutch replacement. They warrantied the original faulty clutch, but caused a lot of collateral damage in the process: ruined torsion bar, leaky transfer case, stripped suspension bolts and loose exhaust brackets. Shoddy work all around and I'm stuck with more expensive repairs to clean up the mess they caused.March 2019 Reply to Response from Owner: I'm not surprised it took you folks over a year to respond to this. It's just par for the course and indicative of your customer service. First, my Nissan is not lifted at all - totally stock suspension. Second, you told me ahead of time that you were going to have to take apart the front suspension to access the transmission and clutch because it's a 4x4. I didn't make it 2 miles from your shop before the passenger side torsion bar gave out. I don't doubt that you remember me when I limped my car right back to you. However, you lied then and you are lying now about the damage you did to it. Fortunately, Big Dog's Tire took care of your mistakes, but it was an expensive way to learn that I should never do business with you. Finally, it doesn't bode well for attracting new customers when you spend more effort on this site rebuking customer dissatisfaction claims than offering any modicum of service.

I brought my jeep in for service over a year ago. The day after i got it back my transmission would not go into gear and they asked me to bring it back. The claim was they didn't put enough transmission fluid in because of an unknown air bubble. A month later my rebuilt transmission stopped working again because of a leak. I paid $2601.54 and i question the actual work they did. I finally brought it to a dealership. There are three leaks, one in the pan (amazing a transmission shop can miss this) and the coolant lines which i paid extra to get replaced after my initial transmission rebuild! Also, when they were working on my vehicle the first time, they broke the light switch off to my kc running lights. They fixed this free of charge, but i had to point it out for them to address the damage they caused. I came to them because of recommendations. I would have came out financially better and saved a lot of my time to have taken it to a dealership in the first place for a rebuild.**edit**The price of my service was $2601.54. I didn't remember the exact price at the time of posting and meant to type $2500. The phone I had then was small and I didn't go back to error check. Thank you for mailing me a letter so I could correct the original price I was charged. To address the claim in your letter that I never brought my jeep back in except for the one time after your initial service because you couldn't add the correct amount of transmission fluid the first time, is simply false. I brought my jeep to a dealership in Athens ga to have it serviced because it wasn't driving correctly. They found leaks from the coolant line. I called James transmission because I had just had my transmission rebuilt and was still under warranty. I was told by the owner the coolant lines were not covered under the warranty but he would fix them at cost. I'm not sure why you would not have a record of this visit, but I also keep records and can produce them. This includes my bank records because i paid with a debit card. I can also produce the records from when I had the dealership redo all this work later. I want to thank you for mailing me a letter so I could address the errors in my post. I have edited it to reflect more accurately what happened. On another note, I am very pleased with the transmission work the dealership in commerce, ga did after I had to bring it to them. I've had no more transmission issues since they worked on it! If you have anymore issues with my review, feel free to mail me another letter.

The transmission in my daughter's car was worn out. The car is old, but it was in otherwise good condition. I didn't want to go through the misery of trying to find another good used car. Also, I figured whatever used car I might buy would need a transmission rebuild sooner or later (probably sooner).James is the best! Before starting work, he gave me a minimum AND maximum price that it would cost to rebuild the transmission. There were no surprise phone calls about how they found additional problems and it was going to cost more. I also liked that he rebuilds the transmission that came with the car from the factory, and doesn't replace the transmission with one that may or may not be the exact match for the car.
