Absolutely dreaded the moment the check engine light came on in my car. All of my university classes got out two hours before the universal closing time of auto shops and before this, I had called another auto repair place, only to be left on a 30 minute hold and then dropped. Willimantic Autoworks was very receptive and considerate! He very clearly and immediately communicated their availability and once I was able to bring it in, he took a look at my car, called me and told me in detail about the situation. I was given a lot of options on what to do, told about costs and the parts that would be needed. We were able to plan together the best option towards getting the car fixed while keeping the budget down by replacing the ignition coils one by one and seeing where the problem was, and he updated me frequently about my car! I was even given a warranty for the repair, which I wasn't expecting! Not that I needed it, because the car worked perfectly after the repair. Overall, I had a great experience with Willimantic Autoworks, and it's the kind of small business place where you walk in, see all the car projects around, and you're 100% certain that they love and are dedicated their work.

This shop has my business for life ! James was fantastic in trouble shooting a major issue with my transmission connection between the ECM and connector. He saved me over $1500.00 (Have a 2015 VW TDI Passat) He litteraly found a broken wire on the connector that plugs to the ECM, a VW dealer would of charged you for a whole new ECM plus service, make it $2K with labor, James only charged me for 2 hours of work, bill under $225.00 !! Thank you James !!

I have been bringing my cars to Willimantic Autoworks since the mid eighties. Jim is honest, personable, reliable and an amazing diagnostician and mechanic. You can be absolutely certain that when Jim says the car is ready to be picked up, the problem is fixed. My wife and I take great comfort in knowing that Jim will be able to fix our cars whatever the issue. We would (and happily do) trust him with our lives. His knowledge of the inner workings of cars (something of a mystery to me) is incredibly deep. If Jim wasn't the best auto mechanic in the northeast it's easy to imagine him as a professor of automotive science at UCONN (if there was such a thing). I first went to Jim on the recommendation of a friend after my then mechanic told me the steering box on my '83 Toyota Tercel needed to be replaced (at a cost of $1500 in 1985!). Jim told me that he had seen a similar problem in VW Bugs and they sometimes only needed a bit of oil added to the steering box. He applied the oil, charged me $5 and the car ran for another 150,000 miles with his care and I never had another issue with the steering box. I cannot recommend Jim highly enough!!! Great dispenser of philosophy to boot!Services: General repairs & maintenance, Engine repair, Brake service & repair

James led the team in evaluating a truck I was intending to purchase. He was prompt, informative and thorough in his communication and in the assessment of the vehicle.

I've brought my car to Willimantic Autoworks for 11 years now and would advise everyone to do the same. Jim and his employees are remarkable and I've always been delighted with their professionalism, service, and prices. This year, though, Jim exceeded all previous wonderful performances by working on my car well past closing time on Christmas Eve so that I could drive it out-of-state the day after Christmas. Not only did he work longer hours but wouldn't accept payment as my concern was that a problem may not have been fully repaired the previous week and, in his mind, that was simply part of the service. Amazing! And the car handled perfectly on my post-Christmas jaunt.

Jim, the owner of Willimantic Autoworks, is not only an excellent and honest mechanic but also a genuine car enthusiast! He did a very thorough job repairing my 2008 Mazda Miata at a fair and reasonable price. His enthusiasm for cars shows in his good work. I highly recommend Jim and Willimantic Autoworks for your car repair and maintenance needs.

Jim and his associates are highly qualified professionals that have provided service for me on several different types of automobiles over the course of 12 years. His prices are better than competitive and his service response is excellent. Every time he services of my vehicles I'm reminded of how well pleased with his service. I recommend his business without qualifications

We have been bringing our cars to Jim for over 20 years. First, He is a brilliant mechanic who diagnoses and fixes cars with top quality parts. But there is so much more to Jim. He is honest about whether or not a repair is needed, and really explains things well for us less mechanically inclined. He will also provide important services, often at no charge, such as checking out a used car you're considering buying, diagnosing a disturbing noise, or checking a code for a check engine light. Finally, he is a bright, articulate guy with a great sense of humor who is a joy to be around. For all these reasons, he may be the best mechanic in Connecticut. In my experience, I have not met one that comes close to his equal.

Jim has all the traits I look for in a great mechanic: experienced, patient, honest, competent, and funny. I highly recommend him. I have a SAAB that is on its last legs, and he has been very open to working with me to keep it hobbling along until I find a replacement without throwing money away on things that aren't necessary. I look forward to bringing my new vehicle there as well (well, as much as anyone can look forward to that sort of thing...).

Save yourself. Would give zero if possible. Chareged me $120 for an oil change costing $81 at a more ethical garage.

Jim is such a gentleman. He's done so much to make sure my car(s) worked right. You can tell he takes pleasure in the challenge of auto repair. I can't tell you how many times he's gone over and above to hook me up and taken care of any problems I've had. We have brought several of our vehicles to Jim. He is honest, knowledgeable, helpful and never tries to fix what isn't broken! If you're looking for a reputable mechanic, this is your place.

Outstanding, RELIABLE, Truthful, and Thorough. If Jim says it, you can count on his Word and Evaluation to be exactly the entire problem, and he always offers affordable and reasonable solutions.Jim Gellespie is a STAND UP GUY in a profression going sorely down hill. If I had found him years ago, my wallet and cars would be substantially IN better shape. The world needs a million Jims for those of us still driving older vehicles that need repair ...but there is just one, so you will ALL just have to go see him at Willimantic Autoworks!

Best mechanic in the area. Far superior than Volkswagen dealerships in the "quiet corner". This guy is a TRUE mechanic and not some glorified computer tech and oil changer like at VW dealerships these days. Won't go anywhere else any more.

Was thrilled to find an honest/reliable mechanic after moving to the area. Jim gets the job done very quickly and gets me back on the road asap. Always a pleasure doing business here.

I cannot speak highly enough of the work done by Willimantic Autoworks. After two jobs my 1968 VW Bug runs like it is brand new. After a total restoration of this car in 2005, the engine never worked well. Having many many VW bugs over the years, I knew something was wrong but couldn't find anyone to fix it.Willimantic Autoworks rebuilt the carburetor and it runs like the 1968 Beetle I used to own in 1968. Runs like a bandit.A great mechanic and a man who bills at a fair rate.A rock Star!

Brought my car in because my engine was stuttering and missfiring and then has my MAS replaced. Cost me $400 for parts and laber... 3 days later my engine wouldn't turn over so brought it back and was told "my work is warrentied" and suddenly there was coolant is the and replaced my spark plugs WITHOUT me telling him to work on it and just cost me another $270. NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN
