This place is terrible. There are many other mechanics in town, shop around before going here! Here's my story- ball joint on my truck was out, and I took it to them. They quoted me 500-700$ (I forgot the exact amount). After getting a quote from another shop, I found that it was half the price. I called McNeals and asked him if I was missing something, if I misunderstood or if they offered something different (quality of part or whatever). He cursed me out told me to get my vehicle. Once at the shop he continued to curse me out, dropping F words and being very hostile. I was calm and polite throughout the ordeal (and before) and was totally taken aback. Sorry I'm not going to pay you double! This guy is a lose cannon. Stay away.

Our alternator went out in our RV van on our anniversary trip on a Friday midday and these very competent and understanding mechanics were able to replace it have us back on the road in short time. They were a lifesaver and very professional. Couldn't recommend them enough.Service: Auto engine diagnosticService: Auto engine diagnostic

My fianc and I are visiting the Durango area from Austin, TX looking at properties and a check engine light came on my 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2. After taking it to the local Chevy dealership, I was told it would be a month before they could get to me, which is extremely concerning given that we leave for Texas in a couple of days. I began calling around, asking if anyone could see me in the next day or so all the while making plans to fly home with the essentials and plan a trip back to pick up the truck after it was fixed. My fianc was also calling local automotive shops and came across McNeal s right down the road from our Airbnb. She spoke to Mike and that they could see me right now, so I immediately took her (the truck) in to get looked at. Cody took a quick look, confirmed that it was the engine coolant thermometer (ECT) as the Chevy dealership said, and began work right away. Cody told me it s a 6-hour operation but it shouldn t take me that long . A little while longer, Cody told me he had everything out and it would probably take another 30-45 minutes to reassemble everything and take her for a test drive. With the work complete, the truck runs great! I cannot recommend McNeal s enough. Mike is a Durango native and one of the nicest guys I ve ever met. He s owned the shop for almost 50 years and runs a very tight ship, and it is reflected in the high quality work they do. Cody was incredibly knowledgeable, diligent, and extremely nice! His attention to detail is another example of why this shop exceeded expectations. I am very grateful that they were able to see me so quickly. Do yourself a favor and go to McNeal s for any automotive repairs or questions you may have. They are truly top-tier and a one-of-a-kind shop.

We came down from Denver to Durango. Once we got to Durango the throw out bearing on our Jeep Wrangler began to make noises. We called 5-6 mechanics around town who could not get us in for atleast a week. Once we contacted McNeal's and told them our situation, they had our vehicle in AND completed by the next day. Because of the kind, understanding people at this shop, we were able to return home on our expected date to return back to work. They are honest, did not try to replace unnecessary things, and were fair priced.I would absolutely recommend this mechanic to anybody in need of car help in Durango.Service: Engine repair

I gave this place the benefit of the doubt after hearing several horror stories. They made a mistake installing my transmission. They tried to fix some wiring on top of the installation. Jasper AND the next shop agreed that the wiring they did messed up the new transmission. Mike didn t even entertain the idea that he maid a mistake. Jasper covered nothing because it was McNeals fault. That s $700 I ll never see again.Service: Transmission repair

I was traveling through Durango and needed a new A/C belt. Other shops said they couldn't get to it for two weeks and/or wanted $200 to "diagnose the problem" before they'd install a new belt. McNeal's squeezed me in the next day, put in the time to source the part (for a 1987 Honda), and charged a very reasonable amount. If I lived in Durango this is the only shop I'd use.Service: General repairs & maintenance

Came from out of state to check out a camper van and had a pre-purchase inspection. Told it would take an hour or so which sounded reasonable. They took the van for a test drive and we took off to spend an hour in Durango. 15 minutes later we got a call saying it was done. We returned and the guy told us it was good. I waited to get a printout or some sort of checklist showing what was inspected and it s condition, which has always been the case with previous car inspections. When nothing was forthcoming I asked for something in writing. The guy scrawled a few illegible words on a receipt and charged $100 for their 15 minutes. There s no way they could have done a thorough inspection in the few minutes it was in their shop. I feel totally ripped off. $400/hour.

We can't say enough about the amazing service we received at McNeal's! We are in from Phoenix and our vehicle started leaking oil really bad and we thought it needed major repair. The service technician diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes and after trying a few things, they got us back on the road in less than 2 hours. They saved the rest of our trip in Durango at an extremely affordable price! People don't run auto shops anymore like this one is run. If you want honest, affordable service, this is the place to go!

Had my truck towed to McNeal's after I broke down. It was the timing belt. They were honest that there may be engine damage. After diagnosing the problem they quickly and professionally replaced the parts needed to fix and prevent the same problem from happening again prematurely. The price was fair and competitive.PS don't forget to have your timing belt and other maintenance done at the recommended intervals. I got lucky, you may not. I recommend using McNeal's. Thanks again McNeal's for the great service.

2 days before our baby's due date, our principal vehicle's in-tank fuel pump died. I asked a friend whose business owns a fleet of trucks who he used and he sent me to Mike. Not only was the job done well for the price quoted, Mike juggled the schedule to get us in right away once he realized our predicament. Old school, help out your neighbor attitude plus quality work for reasonable price.

Good people there. Really good. The owner stopped what he was doing and helped me out immediately. He brought out one of his guys and they were able to ascertain the problem immediately. I had a really poor experience with another shop, took my rig over there and they've been nothing but fair and honest. The owner updated me on his research with my options immediately. I'll not be going to another shop. Finding a good shop is like finding a good Dr. These guys are the real deal. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help! A++++

Huge thanks to Mike and the team at McNiel's. They stepped up when my transmission gave out in Durango on a family vacation. The tow service recommended another shop who we dropped the truck off who charged almost $160 for a 30 minute computer scan diagnosis then tried to tell me $6k for the work. I had to leave it there to rush back to St. Louis in my jeep. We left the truck and trailer. I called a local STL shop for comparison and Mike then who quoted me a reasonable price and included the diagnosis for me. Once I agreed he had it towed also no additional charge. It was more than a rebuild locally in STL, however if I added shipping it would have been a wash. Much less hassle and easy to work with. After pick up yesterday I realized they washed it as well. Thanks Mike. Only thing to improve on is communication when your customer is out of town. I had to call to check and verify it was completed. Although he promised it would be since I had to book a hotel and flight. Again thanks.Darrell

This place is very helpful. They are always honest compared to other places ive been to. They are very fast and quick. Got my brakes checked here only took them 30mins and it was free. Where as jiffy lube said it would take them an hour and charge me $60 even tho they had told me it was free come to find out they were just trying to get my money. McNeals is now my number 1 place to go to if i need help. They are friendly and customer service is beyond appreciated.

I brought a vehicle here Ayer having it at another shop and deciding they wanted too much money. The other guys caused significantly more damage than there was to begin with and tore the car apart in a way that was unnecessary for the fix while still charging me a ton of $$. The guys at McNeils were amazing!! They fixed the original problem plus everything done maliciously by the other guys at an amazing price and my vehicle is now running better than it did when I bought it used 8 months ago. Will not go anywhere else or recommend anyone else in Durango!! These guys are honest and knowledgeable and treat their customers right!!

Friendly and knowledgable, I came in to get an oil pan gasket replaced and asked them about an issue another mechanic brought up to see if it was really a problem. Mike had one of his mechanics show me on my car the "issue" and saved me a needless $1000 repair. I can't recommend these guys enough!

Had play in the wheel of my truck so I took it in to have a new steering box installed. They did and the steering was tight when I left but there was a loud popping sound when the suspension would articulate, and after a few weeks the steering had loosened right back to where it was. I took it back and they said the nut on the pitman arm had come loose and that they retightened it at a higher torque. The steering was tight when I left but then the popping came back and the steering cane loose again. I called them and told them I thought the popping was the nut jumping threads. They said that my model and year of truck has poorly designed steering and there was nothing they could do. I went to take the pitman arm off and use one with a different drop length only to find that they had welded the nut on. Now I have more play in the wheel when I took it in and I can t remove the nut even if I wanted to. I had them put a new diff as well as ring and pinion in as well. I paid for priority shipping and they said the manufacturer sent them the wrong parts and they had to reorder with standard shipping, then they still charged me for priority shipping anyways. I don t think I can justify bringing anything else to these guys.Service: Steering & suspension repair

I recommend avoiding this place as there are many more ethical and reputable businesses to work on complex automotive problems. I felt completely taken advantage of and I do the majority of my own automotive work. They charged me for unnecessary "diagnostics", which I explicitly told them when delivering my car I didn't want or need as it was a simple fuel pump problem. They justified it by saying "we have this $70K machine we need to pay for." I told he and her that I would be outspoken against their company. Go somewhere else!

These people are great, really friendly, superb customer service. They replaced my brakes in a day and didn t try to upsell me or tack on unnecessary charges. Sat and had a nice conversation with one of the guys for about 30 minutes while dropping it off. I will definitely be going back.

Critter got up inside my truck, between the fan and radiator, then got decapitated when I started it. Broke the fan and housing around the radiator; WHAT A MESS. McNeal's got me in quick, replaced the fan and got the poor fella disposed of after 4 days of baking and decomposing. Nasty job, but no complaints, very professional. Thanks Sam and Mike!Service: Engine repair

The brakes on the RV trailer went out. We were headed to our son's home in Durango and found this repair shop on the internet. A true God send. We felt blessed by their professional manner, care for the work they do. Bob said he treats every repair as though his mother would be riding in the vehicle. Hats off to Mike and Bob, you are the best of the very best!

Our daughter was on her first solo road trip to telluride for the blues and brews festival. She had some transmission issues and thought her trip was ruined. We were referred to McNeil's by a local resident and they took care of our baby girl within an hour she was back on the road agaon. Bobby was amazing and assured us all she would be safe in her travels. Thank you Bobby and Mike. You put us at ease and reassured our girl she would be safe to continue on. Much appreciation.

As sent to the Durango Chamber of Commerce:Jack LlewellynExecutive DirectorDurango Chamber of CommerceDear Mr. Llewellyn,Please allow me to present this as a letter of recognition for a business located in Durango, CO; McNeal s Auto Center located at 20447 Highway 160 in Durango. My wife kids were vacationing in Durango last month when we encountered one of the fears associated with a car trip. On the second day in Durango I didn t notice a large rock in the road and drove right over it. Large rocks being what they are it caused a bit of damage to our vehicle. Specifically it crushed the transmission oil pan and pinched a lever that is associated with the gear selector. When I stopped I could no longer put the car in park or reverse. My wife and four kids were nervous as we were over 1,000 miles from home. The hotel manager recommended McNeal s Automotive and provided us with owner Mike McNeal s phone number. I called Mike and he told us to bring the car right in.Upon arrival Mike and his mechanics quickly determined the full extent of the damage and were able to effect the repair within a couple of hours. We had previously scheduled a rafting trip for that day and they promised to have the car done in time for us to make the trip. The mechanic and Mike worked through their lunch hour and the car was ready as promised.Being so far from home with a broken car can be a bit upsetting. These guys did an amazing job and did it at a fair price. They provided patient explanations with full transparency into what the issue may be and what they would do to help out if a more serious repair was needed. Many thanks to Mike McNeal and his team at McNeal Automotive Center. They are a great example of a business that practices exemplary customer service coupled with tremendous integrity to deliver a great product. They are a true credit to the Durango business community.

This guy charged me $705.00 to fix my break cables which a different mechanic later said shouldn't of cost more than $300!! Plus, there was NO BREAKDOWN OF PARTS PURCHASED OR HOURS DONE. Just $705.00 scrawled on a piece of paper was my receipt with no other writing WHATSOEVER. No appropriate for an auto mechanic in the 21st century to treat customers like this. DID NOT ASK my permission before he did it, just called me and said it would be that much to pick up my car. SCAMMER!!

Mike is a good guy. He's not the cheapest, but when you're dealing with one of the most important things you own you don't want the cheapest guy doing it. It usually takes a couple of days, but you can rest assured it was done right.

Mike tried to help me fix my transmission while I was in town on vacation. Although they were unable to source the parts in time and I had to tow it home, they did diagnose the problem and try to help as much as they could and charged me nothing. If I ever have trouble in Durango again I'll check here first.
