It used to be that you would do a chore at a hostel. The prices were a lot cheaper. Here, it's expensive and they still hassle you about the dishes. Owner saves the day, mostly nice guests. Some of my things were missing including tea I bought back from Hawaii. Owner needs to get rid of Gary and Tiffany. They have emotional problems and they hassle the guests. Trying to get a refund for a few days because of their behavior. Gary was swatting at imaginary things in the air. Scary.Safety: Current help is scary and the place was freezing.

Glad we took a private room, which was incredibly nice, but wouldn't go there in a dortoir. Seems old and creepy, just like some of the guests were. This is not a young hip place at all, but it did the trick. Calm n friendly neighborhood thoFood & drinks: Breakfast was satisfyingNoteworthy details: The main private room is amaaaazing

Great location, right by the train station and close to the main bars/restaurants area. Very friendly staff.Rooms: We got a private room for the 4 of us and it is limited space. And only 3 plugs working. But it was clean and the service was good

I love this place!! Jared, Charlie, Carmen and Lilly were so awesome!! Couldn't ask for better so helpful and love to sit and chat and hear their stories as fellow travelers and their experiences. Quaint and homey, that's how I'd describe the hostel, it's homey and inviting. Hang out at the kitchen table and chat with someone from another country. Snuggle up in the living room and enjoy chatting with a whole group of travelers from all over the world. Hearing their travel stories is so fun. Swap stories with the fellow guests is one of the best things about staying here.Must try the sourdough pancakes in the morning, warm and homemade, yummy so good. Bring your own food you have a guest fridge and can cook your own meals as well. Feels like a bit of home away from home.but there can be a draw back.... you can't pick your bunk mates.... let's just say I've run into the rudest, self entitled, crabby lady named Sue who's friends with the owner. She walks around and acts as if she owns the place. Rude when coming into a room where others are sleeping and turns on lights and complains about the heat, the room, and God forbid you smoke or toke outside. If you do she will complain and lie and say you're smoking inside to get you kicked out. Really nice to have another guest tell another paying guest to leave. She's entitled and rude.Other than that this place is awesome but stay away from Sue!!!!Rooms: Rooms are charming and reasonably priced for being 2 blocks from downtown SLO.Nearby activities: Two blocks from the heart of SLO downtown. Farmers market on Thursday nights is fabulous!! The street shows, food, and flowers are so intoxicating it will make you feel happy-go-lucky lol. Movie theater 6 blocks and Amtrak station less than two blocks away.Walkability: Everything is in walking distance even a bus that will take you to the back for 1.75. What a deal!! The parks are gorgeous and well kept 3 blocks down and great for chillin and relaxin in the sun with the cool breeze on your skin.

Staying in different hostels 8+ years around the globe, first time seeing a sign saying Hostel Closed at the entrance. It s dally 11am -4:30pm. No check in allowed before 4:30pm, even after you re checked in, even one of the major reasons staying in a hostel is to cook your own food and save some bucks, even the note says kitchen closed 9:30pm-8am, they don t allow you to cook lunch while they re closed . Don t think about cereals, fruit, milk, or juice, like some hostels have for complimentary breakfast, they only got pancakes, and encouraged you to give tip, and you had to wait in line. Lines often outside bathrooms also, especially in the mornings. Bathroom trash bin wasn t been emptied, overflowing, though addressed to a staff, nothing changed.

Lovely, charming, small-scale hostel. If you like cozy hostels, this is the place to stay. There's a super nice common area with a comfortable couch and chairs and even a piano (if slightly out of tune :-)). The staff is very friendly, and always open for a chat. It's really a fantastic little place. The beds are comfortable and there's storage / locker space. The hostel is clean though not sparkling clean by any means--in particular, the showers could do with a bit of renovation.Oh, the free breakfast pancakes are amazing!I'll definitely stay here again when I'm in the area.

I stayed at this hostel for a week and would have stayed longer! It's a special place staffed by people who really care about providing a good experience. The sourdough pancake breakfasts are fantastic, and the location was very convenient to accessing downtown or hiking up Terrace Hill. Laundry is available onsite (for a small fee) and there is free parking in the back.Keep in mind that it's not a luxury hotel, but if you're looking for a nice "hostel experience" it would be difficult to find somewhere better than this. I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed five nights and had a great experience! Everyone was very friendly. Beds were comfortable, and room was quiet. Complimentary breakfast every morning. Right around the corner is a deli that has amazing sandwiches called Gus's deli where you can enjoy a sandwich, beer, and view of a park. I will return if I'm in the area again!

Very nice cozy feel. I got a single room for more money than I'd really like to spend ($67) but the social atmosphere of the place made it worth it. The room was barely big enough for the full bed it contained plus the bed stand but I didn't mind. There was little reason to be there except when sleeping anyway. The communal kitchen is well appointed, with a refrigerator and shelf space for guests' food. The included breakfast is sourdough pancakes, with the batter and griddle ready to go whenever you are. There's a good chance you'll find people from many countries chatting, playing cards, or playing music in the common area. Overall a very pleasant experience.

I ve stayed in seven great hostels, so I have a pretty good idea what to expect: comfy beds, good ac, and free breakfast. The beds here were creaky and not terribly soft, the owner refuses to use ac when it s 82 degrees outside, and they ask for donations for the make-your-own-pancake breakfast, which is quite a small breakfast compared to other hostels. I m sorry, but I have to thumbs down this place until they choose to deliver a better product.

I admit, I didn t think to look at the photo gallery before I came, and I didn t realize that a small percentage of the HI hostels (and this hostel) are privately owned. But we were NOT prepared for the bad private room next to the reception desk. We literally gasped. I have been in many hostels but I was not prepared for such a shabby room. Because of the footboard, you can t get to the other side of the bed. Because of the single bunk above, they can t try to reposition the bed so you can get around it. The table was too rickety to put even one of our bags on it. Thank goodness the staff were nice and they really made an effort to keep things clean. One shower head could only be put up on the wall by a scrap of cloth attached to it. There is not a TV in the common room. The pancake griddle had a dangerous frayed grill wire. The one bunk room we saw looked better.

This is the first "Hostel" at which I have ever stayed at the recommendation of a relative regarding her using hostels whenever possible while traveling in both the U.S. and abroad too.I have so not been disappointed and feel fortunate that Hostel Obispo is my first experience! As a result, I joined the Hostel Association too...The location is perfect being in a really nice quiet old historical neighborhood, both walking or excellent public transit distance to everything in the City of San Luis Obispo and the entire San Luis Obispo County too.I also found the accommodations to be superb in so many ways with a staff, especially a very nice lady name "Allie", who puts one at ease with a feeling as though you back home as a kid with your Parents and Siblings. The amazing thing is her being like a big sister looking out for your best interests!I found the bunk bed really comfortable and clean with even extra blankets available too. Also, I was given a clean towel each night and the bathrooms we're impeccable just like the bedrooms and rest of the house.I also really appreciated the delicious homemade pancake batter, butter, spices and syrup to make my own and plenty of fresh hot coffee each morning too! Wonderful in every way!I am so going to recommend this wonderful place to any and everyone looking for the true historical peace and serinity which my knowing as a long time local, who was away, but has now returned--is fading fast in San Luis Obispo, but most fortunately is still alive and well at Hostel Obispo! A true blessing!Than you so very much Good People of Hostel Obispo!

I am semi local and have stayed here many times. It is in a perfect location to walk anywhere downtown. On a quiet stretch of a main road. Great parking and stellar staff. Farmer's Market on Thursday is huge so it is a good night to stay on a roadtrip. In my experience everything was very clean, guests very respectful and quiet. I would stay here anyday over a hotel.

Very chill atmosphere. Reasonable price and a great way to find new resources. Check out the farmers market nearby for fresh organic food. I was lucky enough to come at a time where a small group of European women crashed here for the night. The bunk beds would have been a bit discomforting had it not been for the luck of my company that night.

Nice hostel. Book ahead of time if looking to stay here. They can fill up fast, especially during the high tourist season when the hotels/motels/inns in the area all jack up their prices to criminal levels. They also provide free pancakes and coffee in the morning. The coffee is good but the pancakes are a bit bland. Adding butter makes it a little better.

Excellent staff. Easy to find location near the Amtrak station. Complimentary breakfast and free WiFi. Shared a coed room. I met a couple if nice girls from Germany traveling down the West coast. I would recommend staying at the San Luis Obispo Hostel. Any if the Hostels are great.

It's a hostel. I've stayed at nicer, and worse ones. Not many bathrooms and they're all shared so try to shower and all that at an odd hour. the common area is pretty communal - you'll be eating those free pancakes at one big table with everyone else. Staff was nice enough to check me in even though I got there pretty late. They straight up kick you out for a couple of hours to clean which is weird (not just out of the room, out of the entire building) but unless you're just planning on chilling there all day (why would you do that?) it shouldn't be a problem.

Welcoming little hostel that is just a block from the train station and a short walk from the town. Beds are soft but creaky, decently sized for the price. Free, with optional donation, coffee and pancakes in the morning. Sourdough pancakes are really interesting. There are plenty of bathrooms and showers.
