You should visit Mendocino, but don't stay here.We were first greeted by an unbearable musty smell in the main building. The maintenance guy greeted us and checked us in. He was Friendly but clearly not in the know about everything he should have known as the person checking in guests. We stayed in a room around the block in a separate building. The mattress was hard and springy, the furniture smelled like dusty mold, and the decor was creepy. The garden view was just a view of an unkempt area full of twigs and a few flowers next to a swing. And to top it all off, you have to upgrade for a private bathroom. This was NOT a 2 star hotel. There wasn't even a fridge. Had we been staying for 2 or more nights, we would have relocated.

Absolutely beautiful rustic hotel from the California Gold rush/Logging era. originally a saloon and brothel. It has a classic atmosphere that takes you back in time. A place like this is very special, I know it has its leaks and what not. From what I understand they want to remodel the hotel, Please for the love of all things good KEEP IT ORIGINAL for the most part. I understand maybe adding some things to some rooms but what really keeps this place special in my opinion in its classic atmosphere. So please do what you need to do but please KEEP IT ORIGINAL!!!!!!!! My wife and I loved it and we are very young.

I was set to camp and paddle Navarro Beach, but devastating weather forced a closure as I was in transit. I am so happy Angel helped me get checked in after a long, wet day and made sure I was placed in a room with a view of my truck loaded with camping supplies, including my kayak. He and this hotel turned an uncertain episode into a night where I could relax and recharge for the next day's adventures. Awesome location, and I recommend Gnar Bar for some of the best noodles you'll get in NorCal.

Never had a hotel exceed my expectations the way this one did. I chose it for the price, you can spend lots to stay in Mendocino if you choose. Wonderful old building with exquisite woodwork. Real wood furniture in the rooms made by people(long dead) who knew how to use a chisel and a plane. I can hear the ocean from the bed or see it if I step out into the deck. If you are looking for cookie cutter sameness go elsewhere. Mendocino is really really nice.

Beautiful old hotel from the big timber days that is located directly on the main strip in mendo town. It's dog friendly for a fee and the staff is available 24 hours of awesomeness. The structure is old and classy but also needs a lot of structural work and looks a bit shabby these days but we aren't picky it's still pretty neat. The rooms are very tight and be warned that the European rooms all share common bathrooms located in the center corridor. There is minimal ventilation and the rooms can get very stuffy. Overall the price is right and they're dog friendly and the staff is great even if the neat old building is a little run down and uncomfortable. If you're a fancy person you'll turn your nose up a bit. If you're laid back and not a Karen you'll adore the place and be back multiple times like us.

The staff is friendly, no debating that. The location is gorgeous, no doubt about that. The hotel restaurant and bar is closed, but with so much in walking distance it worked out fine. The fact we can have our dog great! The room itself is not good. No AC makes sense since it s on the coast, but no fans? No fridge? Creepy photos on the walls? It seems like we re going to be haunted by Victorian ghosts in the middle of the night! Also there are holes in the wall stuffed with tissue. Everything is very dingy, old and cramped. A few updates could make this place really lovely.

Lovely historical building needs a serious facelift and cleaning. It was super dirty in the lobby and I could see piles of dirt as we walked in on the floor. The room was not terribly comfortable but was fine for an overnight stay. For $200 I expected a lot more. The location is primo but they really need to invest in this place. It feels like it is serious decay.

The rooms are old and dated but generally clean. We felt the rooms were pricey given the amenities, size and design of the room. The rooms itself were in a different area, in the road behind the hotel itself. The location is definitely the highlight. Overall its a decent old hotel in Mendocino. I feel like there might be better options for staying in the area.

This place was a charming little stop along the west coast. We had room 124 and it was outdated in the best of ways. Felt old world and sweet with an amazing balcony and view of the ocean. The staff was sweet and chatty. Would definitely stay here again!

Our bed was hard! Staff fine, but not much help with knowledge of where to eat. We were here three nights.Historical hotel, but admittedly I expected more for the price we paid. I learned...next time Fort Bragg.* might be helpful depending on where one's room is located to have the staff draw lines indicating where your room is in reference to the lobby.

I'd like to say that the employees there are super friendly and were super helpful. We had a 3rd floor room. There's just 2 of them so we had our own bathrooms. No fridge in our room kinda sucked. But had our own personal balcony. They used to have a restaurant but it's currently closed and so is the bars that was disappointing. An no TV in the bedroom.

It's a really cool historic hotel, and it shows its age in some ways (room was a little musty). It was a bummer that the beautiful bar and restaurant were closed and barricaded.Great location close to everything!

Honestly, this place is kind of a dump. It is all very dated. The furnishings are so old they smell bad. My room didn t have a mini fridge. None of the windows will stay open. The bed is lumpy. The water doesn t get hot. The location is amazing.

Great old timey experience. But it is old and all the restuarant and bar services were under construction at the time. Our room had a door leading out to the front balcony, looking down on the water. Very pretty. Trails by the water within walking distance. Loved it!

Ended up staying here without a pre-plan during our l coastal highway drive on US 1.This is the greatest surprise I would have expected.... The place traveled us through time and brought us to the mid-19 century Europe. The hotel is a well prserved piece of history with a perfect blend for weekend getaways with family or friends. The town is cute and beautiful to enjoy the soaring Pacific Coast.PS: The place is managed and owned by very welcoming staff and owner, an octogenarian lady (I assume!)The place was super cheap for the services they provideRooms: Clean and tidy with un room wash basinNearby activities: Seashore and walking path. A bar and cafeSafety: SafeWalkability: Verymuch walkable to anywhere in the townNoteworthy details: Built in 1878 and well kept and clean with moderm amenities.

2 stars because I've stayed at worse places. The king room was cute but missing some key functionalities. Mainly hot water (water was lukewarm, not hot enough to shower), and electricity for a few hours during the night. There's one space heater and the pull out mattress had mold on the bottom, so our daughter slept with us in the king bed. There was a huge storm, water was streaming down the chimney seam, and one of the windows was broken and wouldn't shut, so the storm was extremely loud. I slept maybe 3-4 hours. There was a fireplace, but no duralog or tools. There was a restaurant, but it was closed for renovations. Basically, I could not get out of this place fast enough. I love the old time charm, but when you can't sleep or shower and you've paid $170+ it's inexcusable. This should have been a $70/night stay, it is equivalent in amenities to a Motel 6.

Wonderful Hotel! Great character and charm. Some things were a little outdated and need to be replaced like the curtains and sink fixtures but it is by the ocean and that tends to decrease the lifespan of some things. ;) Either way, Great, great, great location. Everything was in walking distance which was wonderful. Very nice staff too. I would definitely stay there again!

The garden suite we stayed in was spacious and quirky in a good way. The hotel is old, so don't expect polished and pristine or you'll be disappointed. We had a great view, and plenty of room for us and our two kids. Staff was super nice, and their communication leading up to the stay was very transparent on what to expect (tv cable wasn't working, restaurant/lounge closed). The location is ideal, right in the middle of town. Overall, I thought it was a fairly priced room, and we'd stay again.

A great pad and a lovely little village of a place. I liked the staff - I thought that they would be fun to have a beer with if I lived in town. This is quite an eccentric place in my book - but I love staying in places like this. I think some Middle -Americans would not feel the same way - and I understand that as I also appreciate the more expected things. That said, I loved this place and would seek it out again. It's right on the coast in the middle of town so you can walk to everything. Seemed like a number of Europeans we're staying here during my brief time.Rooms: I loved my room - I could open the doors to a balcony. Very clean.Safety: I felt very safe at all times.Walkability: You can walk to everything

A rustic and cozy hotel that was perfect for our overnight stay. We came up to Mendocino on a Tuesday and they had one room left, Room 7. Climb up their stairs and down the well traveled hallways to our room. They have clean showers and our bed had to be 4' off the ground, pretty comfortable with extra blankets in the bottom of the armoire. The double doors opened up to an outside wrap around balcony that overlooked the rooftops and the ocean to the left. Unfortunately, their restaurant on premises is still closed but there are more than enough awesome restaurants in the 2 Block range to satisfy the hungriest appetite! Also, while they do have Wi-Fi, there are no USB plugs in the room so bring a wall plug.

Cleaning staff left a tray with cleaning supplies on the table at the top of the stairs. It was the first thing you see when you get to the top of the stairs and it stood out in my memory. I thought it was unprofessional and lazy and detracted from the overall ambiance of your beautiful historic building. I have always loved this building. The person at the front desk was new, but very helpful and very pleasant. It seemed he was the only "onsite" manager. I visit Mendocino often - I am from Sonoma County and have friends in Ft. Bragg, but not sure if I will stay in your hotel again. The noise from the adjacent room bothered me, but there is nothing you can do about that . . . it's just the thin walls of an old building.I hope you find my comments helpful.Nearby activities: Mainly interesting shops and ocean access.Walkability: Many cool shops in the area.Food & drinks: Many nearby choices within walking distance.

Pros: Beautiful hotel with lots of history. Great location and walking distance to lots of restaurants and shops. Right in downtown Mendocino with a beautiful view of the ocean. Staff was very friendly. Free coffee and tea available at any time. Beautiful room with a shared deck. European style with unique/antique furniture.Cons: The room we stayed in was right next to a bar and there was no sound insulation, so it was impossible to fall asleep until the bar closed. Even with the heater at maximum, the room was very cold. The only blanket was a very thin fleece blanket (no comforter) and no other blankets in the room. The mattress was lumpy and you could feel every spring. Even when the bar did close, I was tossing and turning until sunrise trying to find a comfortable position. I had really hoped to sleep in during a relaxing weekend away but getting any good sleep was impossible.

Staff was incredible. Very helpful and eager to please. Although slightly dated, our room was clean and well appointed. Grounds are beautiful and access to the ocean and great little town is easy and convenient. We would highly recommend for a quick getaway or extended stay. Quiet, relaxing and well worth the coat (which was very reasonable compared to other hotels in the area).
