Peninsula Automotive is my go to shop! I bought a 1971 Type 2 Bay Window Bus a few years ago and it had a ton of problems. Peninsula helped me get the bus up and running well. Most recently they installed a WagensWest drop kit on the bus too. Mikah and Dave are awesome and great to work with. VW owners always have a list of things they want to do to their vehicles and I look forward to working with Peninsula Automotive to get them all done.

Competent. Honest. Fair.I've enlisted this shop for two separate (unrelated) repairs, and in both instances I was 110% satisfied. Customer service was friendly, but more importantly for me the work was done correctly and the cost was fair for what had to be done. They specialize in VW, however I'd feel confident taking any make to them that they'd be willing to work on. Highly recommended.Services: Electrical repair, General repairs & maintenance, Oil change

I had a bunch of small things to take care of but the main thing was the rear hatch lock was nonfunctional and that meant not using the trunk for every day use. These guys fixed it and it is so nice to be able to use my trunk again. good job!Service: General repairs & maintenanceService: General repairs & maintenance

Not impressed! Nice enough guys but I wasted $600 to have things I didn't ask for replaced and was still left with the 2 specific problems I asked them to fix.I had (still have) an oil leak and a shudder in my 1970 Kombi. That was all I asked them to find, figure out, and fix. They replaced my battery (which I did need), distributor, points, oil drain plug, oil drain cover, and countless other things. I repeated to them each time we spoke (3 separate times) that I didn't even care what they replaced, just fix the shudder and the oil leak. I picked it up and the first thing it did was shudder out of the parking area. I was so upset I didn't go back in and I had other places to be. So I called back and they said bring it in and we'll take another look at it - not for free though which they should have because they did things that were obviously not fixes to my problem. Just small upgrades I could have done on my own and didn't need them for. Oh yea, and the oil leak is still there as well.If you want to waste your money and your time - go ahead and use them. However if you want good service and honest work, THIS IS NOT the place.

I have been taking my VW Golf to Peninsula for 5 years now. The service is great, the shop rate fair and the turnaround time excellent. And there's always a recommendation of repairs that I did not know existed...Real Ones, I can see, not made up or caused there for more cash. The staff treat me like an old friend, not a bank, and I like That difference from all the other shops I have been to. I Trust These Guys. This is One of Two Shops that I take my vehicles to, the other is for my Toyota 4Runner.Five Stars For These Guys All The Way

I am servicing our 90 Vanagon Westfalia Camper with Peninsula Automotive since coming up 8 years or so and its time for a 5 star review. I have put a brand new 4 speed transmission in that leaked from the get go. Dave acknowledged the issue as the suppliers fault and put in a new one that he had in stock and turned it around in one day hassle free. Well for a $3k job you would expect that you get that type of service. But do you really always get it? Dave and Sharon have been upping their game constantly for years. Products, availability, staff, service etc.. It really is the last man's standing resort in San Jose working on old VWs and they have mastered it. Keep going. And thank you.

Understated solid customer service - that is, my experience was of honest, fair dealing with no games. My Vanagon passed smog easily (no mean feat for an old bus) after the tuning here, and it runs sweetly. Parking is a little tricky on this stretch of road but some spots in front of the business.

Dave and Dan and the crew at Peninsula are invariably helpful, friendly and professional. Excellent work at a fair price. I had an 89 Westy for 5 years and they did all kinds of work on it as well as many upgrades. The go-to place for VW bus and van owners in the south bay area.

The guys are very knowledgeable and experienced. They told what I needed to have done immediately and what I could put off until later. They have been clear in what they can do and what they will send out (a transmission)They are very helpful in letting me know what options I have for a given issue.I have been in several times and expect to continue using them in the future.

My "new for me" 1970 Karmann Ghia was recently towed to Peninsula Automotive, and a week later I was able to roar away in bliss. Dave was very patient and kind enough to come out to make sure that my daughter was securely fastened into her seat belt and made sure the tricky passenger door (something I still need to get repaired) was tightly shut. Growing up my sisters and I were "assistants" to our father during many car repairs - so I know enough to be annoying, but not enough to feel secure in repairing anything. Dave didn't talk down to me and I didn't feel intimidated at all when chatting about repairs - which is a nice feeling for a woman dealing with car repairs. Thanks Dave =)

Exceptional service and assistance. Peninsula Automotive was recommended by my mechanic for a 1960 Porsche 356B Roadster. The shifting coupling had failed after nearly half a century of flawless service but it did indeed require some research and many phone calls. Jim and Dan provided information and suggestions as to where I might be able to find one of these couplings which was similar to an early model Type II (mircro bus) and suggested that I contact a machine shop to modify if needed. I can't thank them enough. When my 2008 Passat needed front brakes and a fluid flush I asked Peninsula to preform the work and it was done on time, on budget and I will return in the future as needed. Thanks guys,Ed W.

Great outfit and knowledge base for classic VWs. Because of their expertise, I had confidence in recently purchasing a 1990 Westy for our weekend family excursions. Friendly professional staff, quality repair work.

I've been using Peninsula Automotive for several years, primarily for my 69' 912 Porsche which they have kept running great. It has around 370,000 miles on it and I still drive it every week (except I'm now 83 and don't drive it as much),and when I was still working I put about 300 miles a week on it. Being a 912 the engine is almost a VW one so they know it like a watchmaker would know the workings of Big Ben.I now take our 2002 Audi to them also. Stan Hunt.

Had a great experience with them. They handled communicating problems to the insurance and adding issues onto the claim after identified. The truck came back looking perfect!

Mechanics are very knowledgeable of VW and older cars, which means they fix things quickly and correctly. They could be a bit more organized, Dan who is running the shop seem like a organized guy and making improvements to communication to customers on how their repair is going.

I went to this shop to get a transmission oil cooler installed on my VW RialtaI left my Rialta there to get the job doneThe first quote with Steve was $180 they call me and said that there was a part missing and they couldn't do the job the part was aTRANSMISSION MOUNT? COST for the part was $50The price then went from $180 to $1200 they said it was a Big Job?So from $180 it went up to $1200?I felt cheated!!I left and was very disappointed with this shop!I had the job done at a Transmission shop in Santa Clara for half the Price $600.You be the judge..

When you see graybeards and they know their stuff, don t turn you away at 5:29p: Don t even think twice, nimnuts, book an appointment right freaking now (kids and girlfolk maybe reading). Don t settle for hipsters (hippies are cool) in Berzerkeley whom often charge an arm and three legs to do a minor job and then try to pad the bill or shade-tree one-man-band mechanic that just puts up a VW sign. As sure as my hairline is receding and joining the grey club, they know their snot! When you go with them, that laundry list of put-off-too-long things will finely get whittled down and you ll have another list (honeydo or some such) to get demotivated about. Farck yeah!
